COVID-19. On annual leave for the next few weeks and had planned on visiting my sister in London (Highgate Cemetery) and brother in Kent (Dover Castle). Then to Portsmouth (Mary Rose and Docks), Warwick (Castle) Stratford on Avon (afternoon tea on river) and Ironbridge Gorge in Shropshire (Museums).

Now, not so sure. COVID cases on the rise again and more lockdowns. I’m sure I’d be safe but just do not feel comfortable. Thinking it better to just stay at home and enjoy some “me time”....
I’m off next week as well. My plans involve visiting B&Q and working in my loft all week!

A sign of autumn sneaking in to conquer habits of summer: I've switched back to 12-oz mugs for my coffee, which ends up now half coffee and half nonfat milk. In summer I use 16oz mugs and the concoction runs more to 1/3 coffee and 2/3 milk. But it cools too soon in the cooler house of late summer mornings... even with a dipping sauce "lid" set over the mug.

In a way that's what I love about living in the northeast: the change of seasons, although sometimes the shift is so abrupt that it can feel cruel to any form of life. Still I missed all that when I spent a year or so in California, so much so that I cried when a prof from my undergraduate school mailed me a couple of New England pine tree needles in his Christmas card. I had to remind myself then that I didn't really miss the harsh winds off Lake Ontario that had greeted me on winter mornings when I was a kid tasked with helping shovel the drive.

Anyway the great thing about weather in the Catskills has usually been as the farmers say around here, "if you don't like it, wait 20 minutes."

Is anyone tired of the latest security measures? I know it is good to keep your personal data safe but Apple is driving me crazy. I recently tried to swap my daughters iPhone 7 with a bad battery with my wife's iPhone 7 with a good battery.

Nice and easy over Bluetooth except it is not good enough for Apple that I sign in to the iTunes account with a password. Not good enough that I use finger print identification, not good enough that I have a pass code on the phone. Oh no, 'we are going to send a pass code to one of your trusted devices'. OK so which one? I bought into your ecosystem and have at least 10 'trusted' Apple devices. Now I need to light them all up like a Christmas Tree and wait for you to send a code to one of them.

I have been banging my head against the wall trying to write verse. Lately I've been sitting at my desk, tense and full of anticipation, drinking my coffee and smoking my cigarettes, waiting for inspiration to hit. I guess I'll have to be happy with this bit, which came to mind a little while ago:

I once belonged to a radical faction
Doing math and rejecting the fraction.
We thought numerators should numerate,
And denominators should accept their fate.
Denominators, dead-weight, would die out,
Numerators are what a fraction is about.
We marched for one number, one not below but above,
Numerators, the number all men could love.

But wait, I have to go. I have an idea for something about swearing angels and black coffee. Damn, being a poet is a delicate and desperate business. Take care everyone.

And you've inspired me to change your text into verse. Hopefully the text alignment comes out right:

Been wearing a face mask and a face shield for the last 6 months. No big deal to be honest. Face mask, face shield and wash hands regularly. It is not rocket science, just good practice to stay safe. Please don't tell me my compatriots in the UK have not been doing this for the last 6 months. That would be really stupid. I don't want to come home to the UK to face stupid.

Hate to tell you this, but there’s plenty of stupid here. Face masks are compulsory in shops etc. But you’d be surprised how often those face masks are worn below the nose or not at all.

Lovely sunny day here. Just back from a walk with Mrs AFB. Enjoying an afternoon tea and have the next week off. Lovely.

Steve,
You are in for a big shock. You will be facing stupid starting right from a townhouse with a number known by all

It is going to happen right? Inevitable. I am going to fly in from a third world county where we take care of ourselves with masks and face shields and alcohol rinses then walk into a first world country that has no idea how to deal with CoViD-19.

Yayyyy lucky me.

If you are going to the northeast you are going into a lock down but all the young guys and girls were out last night in drunken mobs for a last hurrah.

I think it is just rebellion and that will always happen when diversity and conflict occurs.

Teenagers love conflict, diversity, change, they thrive on it. Come on, if you are a teenager and crave attention what better way than to do this????

I’m expecting a call from the police after an incident today. My wife and daughters drove to a nearby village in the Brecon Beacons to go for a walk. There’s a gate that is looked after by some of the villagers and they have a sign warning people it’s locked at 3pm. It’s a public right of way but the locals installed it to stop people on motorbikes using the track. I sort of understand that but the locals also don’t like people from outside the village going there for reasons unknown. There are a lot of social media posts complaining about non-locals turning up to walk dogs etc and it’s clear there a very narrow mindedness about the place.

Anyway my wife and daughter drove through the gate and parked in a pull in so they could walk. They didn’t go far and about 30 mins later they came back down to find the gate had a big padlock on it. This was at 11.30am. I got a call from my panicked wife so I chucked some tools in the car and went to meet them. I knocked on quite a few doors in the village asking if anybody knew who had a key but got quite a frosty and rude response mostly. We waited around for another half an hour with very bored kids. I had no alternative but to use my disc cutter on the gate. The padlock was hidden inside a metal welded cover so I cut off the hinges and pushed the gate aside. We got out and now I’m expecting the police to appear at my door and in all honestly I hope they do lol. A funny old day lol :)

Quite the adventure. Having recently moved to a village I can sort of see both points of view. But a public right of way is a public right of way. Locking it is an offence.
Couldn’t they have climbed over?
