Coming up on the end of my week off, which was mostly spent doing things that I’ve been meaning to get to for, well, awhile now.

My SO and I also took a day and walked along a canal trail by the Roanoke River. It was refreshing and interesting. We stopped for a bite at a local soul food restaurant, in a converted gas station. The mac and cheese was to die for. We also went to a huge antique mall, in an old mill building by the river, and found some pretty neat stuff.

Partly inspired by the week off, I’m considering taking a two or three day personal retreat, by myself, to ponder, reflect, and adjust my actions going forward.

It used to be easier to do such a thing when I lived in the southwest, pre-COVID. I’d simply get in the appropriate vehicle and head for southeastern Utah to camp in the desert.

However, I live on a fairly large farm, and I still have my camping stuff. I just might find a spot and pitch a tent. We’ll see.

Can I be sure the new iPhones and HomePods from and packaged in China will not bring me more COVID?
Have you seen the Simpsons episode where Homer orders something from Japan and the guy packing the box is sneezing and coughing from some flu virus and when Homer opens the box the virus rushes out and is soon all over Springfield?

Books, beer, bread, bills, my French classes and the farmers' market.
What’s happening? A while ago beer was first on your list. Now it has dropped to second. If your French classes are for personal enjoyment and not employment mandated, relax and don’t stress. As an aside, have you seen the 10 part series where Gerard Depardieu and his friend the chef visit various European spots? It is currently being shown in Finland. Quite interesting as long as you can ignore Gerard’s boorish habits and need to take most of the food before others have a chance.

The stuff one one's mind (well, my mind anyway) is not always a source of stress.

Sometimes, it is even a source of pleasure.

The French classes are partly for professional reasons, but, no worries, I am actually enjoying them; it is god to resurrect my reasonably extensive dormant French vocabulary (and to learn the grammar I somehow paid a lot less heed to than I should have done, when at school).

And beer will become uppermost once again, in a matter of mere minutes when my first beer of this Friday night is opened.

Do enjoy. Off to make another tea here. Having a few weeks of alcohol. Not that I drink much anyway.

My mind is on my fantasy team, a trip out tomorrow with the camera and memories of sunshine!

Alas no beer, or more importantly red wine, for me for at least a week. So that is going to be on my mind every day :-(

Last Saturday had a mosquito bite. Sunday scratched it by accident. Tuesday it was infected. Thursday became Cellulitis. Friday on a course of antibiotics. So no alcohol and decaf coffee does not round off an evening in the same way.

What’s on my mind? I’ll tell you what’s on my mind; I’m wondering if I’m too old to make it as a world famous rock star? I’m 56, overweight and balding I’ve just bought an beautiful American Fender Stratocaster and have started playing again. I used to play years ago. I played (badly! ) from around 16 years old until 30 and although I’ve always had a guitar, I’ve never really played much. Now, working from home and mainly isolating I have more time on my hands. I’m very much enjoying more time to read, to contemplate, to just “be” and not rush around as much. I feel like a new man!

I won’t give up my day job just yet but.....if you see an old bloke on TV “pickin’ n a grinin’” then it’s me! Now, where’s my sunglasses?

Don't forget hearing protection.

Commiserations on the mosquito bite; I can sympathise, as the winged horrors are more than partial to me.

It is one of those asymmetrical relationships; they love me and I detest them.

Good luck with your future career - or, hobby - as a rock star, @AVBeatMan.

Good for you. Better read the thread about how Spotify and Apple pay artists. It’s apparently a jungle out there!

Congrats on the new guitar! With all the craziness going on currently there seems to be a positive trend happening in that many people have either started playing, or returned to their instruments because there's not much else to do. It certainly played a part in my case, and is one of the only really good things to happen in the past 6 or so months.

I've been eyeing this beautiful Telecaster myself, but things being as they are I'm not exactly comfortable with the idea of dropping about 2000 euros on a guitar right now, but one can always dream.

As a birthday of mine approaches, mentally, I am wondering what the next physical year will bring. I suppose in a way, it doesn’t really matter, we’d just have to deal with it, whatever it is...

The Simpsons notwithstanding, we seem to know so little about Covid that I just wondered.

A walk on a pleasant autumn day.
I had one myself this afternoon. Also one this morning with my camera. But it wasn't good lighting.

Agreed, the lighting isn't - and wasn't - good (and will deteriorate further as the year progresses) but it seemed to me to be a good idea to have a nice pleasant stroll while the weather is still half okay.

Web design seems like a dying profession. Back in the day there were many "webmasters" and web design services. As social media and services like SquareSpace came to be, the need for a web designer seems to go extinct. As website become more advanced, looks like there isn't much difference between a webdesigner and a programmer.

I am thinking those who have a website are big brand companies, and they do it in house.

This week, I started working on an ERP application for a local business.

Honestly, I wish I knew everything about the application already, it would certainly make it easier for me to implement a key features...

As someone in the industry my take on it is that the 90s/early 2000s "web designer" is indeed a rare thing these days. For those type of sites (i.e. often "brochure" sites, basically a handful of static pages, maybe a contact form) there are indeed "no-code" options available.

The closest I can think of these days would be someone who does UI/visual design, and "front end" development, producing templates to be integrated the application logic.
