Yes, the clouds dissipated (finally, eventually) hours and hours after sun down, hence, that spectacle could no longer be seen.

Spent an hour or so chatting with friends in Bristol, who had remembered why this day of the year mattered to e.

The dance of the planets is progressing pretty slowly, so if the weather accomodates any time in the next several days, it should look pretty similar to how it looks tonite.

And my condolences on the anniversary of your loss.

My Lecia binoculars are ready - they were called into action last night, but clouds defeated the purpose - and shall be summoned to do the needful, if opportunity calls.

Thank you for your kind words.

Much appreciated.

The half moon looks very clear, but i could not see jupiter, saturn yet through good binoculars in southern west florida. Maybe saturn is too low now Hour wise.

One article I read said "an hour after sunset", but I found 30 to 45 minutes was better. It's bright enough that it will be visible even with some twilight remaining.

I also found that looking for it shortly after sunset and checking again every 10-15 minutes was helpful.

I'm not sure quite how many blankets of cloud comprise a duvet of cloud, but - outside it is wet and dark and miserable; above all, there is a duvet of cloud covering what passes for the sky.

So, while Jupiter and Saturn can wink at the world, as they appear to come together, nonetheless, they remain unseen from where I am.

I’m curious what you mean by sunset? This implies at some point there was a sun visible in the sky. I don’t think I’ve seen it since September!
Raining here again.

Well, it's an astronomical term, or theoretical, or philosophical, or maybe rhetorical.

Actually, I kind of like "rhetorical sunset", as it suggests something hypothetical which is taken as concrete for the sake of a discussion.

Exactly.

A sunset implies that the sun is visible when it is about to set.

That is not the case in our rain-drenched, saturated, sodden, isles.

Seen that glorious orb since September? Perhaps once or twice.

Yes the river is looking pretty high near here. Glad I don’t live on the floodplain.
I get the feeling we are destined to not see the convergence here.

I didn't even bother with the very changeble weather we have lately.

Consoled myself with the breakfast of champions this morning, churros from one of my favourite street vendors. Been watching "Street Food" on Netflix, first Latin America and now Asia.

At the farmers' market early this morning, some of the best vendors explained that some products had not been delivered this week, on account of issues well publicised elsewhere to do with transport, closed borders, rising rates of infection, and quarantines, and - lemons and oranges (and citrus fruits are in season just now) were not available from most of the stalls that sold such produce.

Weather is absolutely vile out there. Glad I’m home with no need to go out.

Ah, yes, it is. Agreed.

The fish I had hoped (nay, expected) to have delivered today never arrived; cue cock-up, and (polite) emails.

They wondered whether I could collect the fish at the market tomorrow; no, not with Covid, rotten weather, and the fact that I had done my market shopping today, (fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread) and don't expect to be in the city until close to the New Year, if then.

So, my fish will be delivered tomorrow afternoon.

A good friend from Spain phoned for a chat - Christmas Eve, New Years's Eve, and January 6 are the big days for celebration in the Spanish seasonal calendar.

Meanwhile, dinner is on my mind......

Looking forward to Saturday here.
Dinner was jacket potato with beans and cheese.

Have puttered around here today, wrote a couple of emails, plus shot a couple of holiday-themed photos but don't really like either of them. I am just not really in the holiday mood. Our weather is nice today, which is great, but tomorrow will be rainy most of the day through the night, and Christmas Day will be very, very cold. Glad I'm not traveling anywhere! Also glad that I did my grocery shopping yesterday as I have the feeling that today the store is really busy.

SS, how annoying that the fish you'd been expecting to be delivered didn't make it to you today after all! I hope that they follow through and do deliver it to you promptly tomorrow.

AFB, glad you're home safe and sound, too, if the weather is bad there today/tonight!

Localised flood warnings. The journey home was not pleasant. But I’m good for a few days now.

Raining here.

Washing up done dinner (my homemade vegetarian tom yum soup with Japanese ramen noodles) was delicious.

Yes, I hope that the fish order will be delivered tomorrow, too.

This is not a small order, or rather, it is not a inexpensive order.

@Scepticalscribe Many belated condolences 🤗 I hope you and decent brother are okay. May your fish be delivered soon.

Sending 🤗 @Clix Pix @Apple fanboy and everyone else in this thread. Not very holiday mood either. Older sis will be dropping off dinner for us tomorrow night. I just wish there was something we could do to improve mom’s pain. She‘s on a prescription NSAID as the opioids and other hard painkillers did nothing (Thank goodness for that).

@AVBeatMan - thanks again for the seek an M1 16gb / 1TB MBP at your local store advice. Sure enough local shop had that MBP configuration available this morning so I jumped. The M1 MBP is quite fast and I like typing on this. It feels more like the machine Apple promised at the One More Thing event.

So M1 MBA, Intel MBP and AirPods Max will be going back (Lesson learned, check the local Apple store VERY early for these configurations). Alas, AirPods Max are quite painful for me to wear. This stinks because I absolutely love them in almost every other way (Smart Bra case withstanding). To be fair, my naturally quasi-Vulcan ears never get on with over the ear headphones because of the cushion shape and my glasses. I tried so hard to make these work. 🥺 If mom’s Beats Flex are okay, I’ll get a pair for myself.

In more important news, starting to apply to jobs and attempting to help mom in any way I can.

I wish I could see Jupiter and Saturn...good luck to everyone trying to see them tonight.

Hope everyone is okay.

I can't be the only one glad that their Christmas hating self finally has a valid reason to avoid being drawn into any family activities.

I've never liked Christmas but at least being alone comes with a perfectly valid excuse this year.

Good luck with the job hunting. I’m sure in the New Year there will be more opportunities.

Not at all. But I’ve not partaken in anything Christmas related for 5 years. I can’t wait for it to be over. Although I think the people saying they can’t wait for 2020 to be over are just as delusional. I’m not sure 2021 will be any better. Certainly not the first 6 months.
