I am not sure if all those 20-30yo with little experience trying to be a life coach are serious or not.

You have much to learn, grasshopper. 😌

The idea that someone in my age range could call themselves a “life coach” makes me raise an eyebrow. We may be able to impart some valuable youthful insight from time to time but I think one should wait a decade or two before they start a career of offering life advice.

What’s on my mind right now is the copious rain we’re receiving here in the Bay Area. It’s much needed and much appreciated. :) I woke up to the sound of it. That’s a rare occurrence here!

Thinking of completely going back to tapes, CDs and vinyls. No idea if something like this is included in Apple Music as well (I wouldn't be surprised), and it doesn't really matter either way. There's lots of good stuff in the "Information Age" we're living in, but it's things like this that just give me the major heebie jeebies. Possibly on account of my lack of deeper understanding of the issue. Still, a curmudgeon is as a curmudgeon does, and he doesn't like this one bit no sir / ma'am.

SPOTIFY’S LATEST INVENTION MONITORS YOUR SPEECH, DETERMINES YOUR EMOTIONAL STATE… AND SUGGESTS MUSIC BASED ON IT.

Hell, the way I talk on, and around the phone it could be either all Britney Spears or all Decapitated depending on the time of day. Then again, that Spotify algorithm has to feed it's algorithm family too, so let it earn it's living with people who use Spotify. And maybe they'll, along with every other streaming provider, could start paying the artist a bit more money? We'll see.

Spoiler: They probably won't.

What an awful, perfectly horrible, and frankly quite terrifying, idea.

Just reading about it makes me want to hug my vinyl and CD collection.

reMarkable2. Just ordered but do I really need one? Probably not but I am intrigued about what all the fuss is about. Anyone here have one?

Sometimes. But I rarely print stuff. But books for example are always nicer in a printed form.

My Dad has his first Covid vaccination Monday. I’ll feel much happier when both my parents are done.

Agreed about how proper, printed books (on paper) are a lot nicer than their online equivalent.

Can sympathise re your parents; if mine were still around, I'd be worried stiff about them, and busy trying to keep them safe.

Yeah, count me out of these streaming services and "smart speakers" that are always listening/monitoring your activity. I don't understand the appeal of them at all. My friend has a smart speaker and all he uses it for is playing music. I can do that with my stereo system or computer and they're not curating a playlist based on my emotions. I don't like this trend where technology has gone from being a powerful tool that can be manipulated to its greatest utility by a power user to being something that's "smart" and does all the thinking for us (with minimal user input). It's like a manual vs. automatic transmission.

Anyway, I own a lot of CDs and vinyl but I also do download digital albums (so that at least I own the digital copies; I'm not interested in streaming). I use Qobuz and Presto Classical. Spotify never interested me with its lack of lossless content and this just confirms my aversion to it.

I'm thinking if I ever go back to physical music again it's going to be CDs. Tapes and vinyls suffer from bad pressings and people taking advantage of the limited circulation of older stuff and selling them at high prices. I'd rather stick to my lossy MP3s/FLACs if it's going to come to that.

The reMarkable 2 says it's partly powered by the eInk technology, which I'm wondering what that really means? I got rid of my Kindle Paperwhite because anything you do refreshes the display which takes a hit to the battery, so just highlighting stuff ran down the battery everyday with the light also on. But the reMarkable obviously is going to have a bigger battery since it's meant for writing/has the bigger display.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

And I tried.

Same here. I still buy and listen to actual records all the time, but saying that streaming doesn't have its uses would be intellectually dishonest, so I won't. It's a balancing act, for sure, and I guess the least worst thing to do is to hitch your wagon to the one that at least does it's best to assure the consumer that they're doing... Good? The best they can? Right by the artists? I don't even know anymore.

Absolutely. A smart speaker? Why is it hard to use your phone or wrist to change the track? I’m old enough to remember when you used to have to get out of your chair to change the track or channel on the TV. Guess what there was a lot less obesity then. Now we have a device to tell us to stand every hour!

Now I've got all these CDs and can only play them in the house, but I rarely do that since I can just play them in iTunes on the computer anyway.... I've been really enjoying listening to my iTunes library in the car, though -- I set it to "Shuffle" and so I get a delightful mix of songs, some of which I haven't heard in ages. It's been fun!

Absolutely agreed.

And I find such a concept....profoundly unsettling.

A passionate, profound (and heartfelt) amen to that.

Couldn't agree more.

I don't own and never intend to own a Home Pod or Echo or other similar device. I don't need it and I don't want it. Sometimes technology is just a little too intrusive and I'm not about to allow that to happen in my home.

As for Automatic vs Manual transmission, I used to enjoy driving my stick-shift cars but after a while in this area traffic became just so congested that it was not as much fun any more. When my husband became ill and we realized that he wouldn't be returning to work, his illness was going to progress, we assessed our vehicle situation. No way I could drive two cars, even if I rotated them through a cycle, and so we went to a car dealership and traded in both of our cars on just one, a Honda Accord with automatic transmission. At that point my husband was still driving some, but not that frequently. Looking back, if I recall correctly he drove it all of two times. Anyway, adjusting back to automatic transmission was easy enough for me, as I'd learned on automatic in the first place, but even now I still kind of miss that fun of driving a stick shift!

*Sigh* I still miss driving a stick and the only reason that I went automatic is that I was no longer driving the distances for work. It took me forever to stop trying to drive with both feet. I do own the HomePod and love it though. I’m thinking of getting a second to try out the fuller surround sound feature. I do understand your reasons behind too much tech which is the main reason that I only have Apple gear—well, except for the modem and eero pro mesh 6 routers. Not sure that is much of an argument though 😜.

When my current Apple Extreme Base Station gives up the ghost I am going to explore the mesh system kind of setup, as I think that would be ideal here in my condo unit. I had to replace my modem a couple of years ago so it should be good for a while longer now, but I think I would also get a new modem at the time of setting up the new mesh system so everything is the same age.

On my mind. When they have a news article about people having to use food banks and people not being able to feed their kids, why do they always choose to interview a fat parent? Does somewhat send a mixed message!

I swear they do it on purpose.

I just got my iphone 12 "MINI" moving from iphone 7...the screen HUGE , whats wrong with you people?

My aunt just passed away, she had a stroke last Wednesday and left us. She was in Athens and just spoke briefly to my cousin, she was my Mom's sister-in-law and had not been well for a long time. Last time I met her was in 2014 with a large family reunion but she was in poor shape could not see her in 2019 or 2020 (was there last February just before the pandemic exploded) when I was visiting Athens for my job. So that leaves my aunt (Dad's sister) and uncle in Eastern Canada with my Mom on the West Coast. Me not knowing when I will see them again. I speak to Mom on the phone but she is not tech savvy, even my aunt and uncle can use video chat etc.
