A few months ago a friend who is a physician and I had a discussion about ventilators, and she reminded me that they are meant to keep everything going while the body also has an opportunity to heal where that is needed. Her elderly (88 years old at the time) mother developed pneumonia and it became pretty serious so she was on a ventilator for I think a week or so and that made all the difference for her, as her lungs and respiratory system had an opportunity to rest and to heal while the ventilator did the necessary work of keeping her going during that time. The mother overcame the pneumonia and returned to her home and enjoyed a year and several more months of life until something else -- I think a coronary infarct -- felled her and that was that. So, yes, ventilators can save lives......

I know. It’s going to be a cold few days. Well, plan is simple: hot coffee, Netflix, books, board games.

youbate exactly opposite in UqpState NYS and Lake Affect Snow and February is traditionally the coldest!

That is what makes February such a cruel month.

The days are lengthening - mornings are a little brighter, evenings longer, days just a little warmer, as my dear old mum used to say at the end of January - "ah, there is a bit of a stretch in the evening" - and you think that the corner of deepest, darkest, dreariest winter has been turned, as spring beckons.

And then, both unexpected and unwelcome, a cold snap arrives, complete with clouds, pregnant with frozen moisture, dispensing freezing sleet and snow and hard-hitting hailstones, while roads are treacherous and pavements or footpaths slippery of ice.

Yes it’s due to snow again next week. 4 inches potentially. Hopefully they got it wrong.

The thing is, you have persuaded yourself that this - a cold snap, with snow, and sleet, and ice and hailstones - all the forms of frozen water - is normal, and only to be expected, in December and January.

Not in February, when even the quality of light has (just about) begun to improve.

And - by February - winter has already been quite long enough, thank you very much, and you are desperate to see the end of it - which means that an unexpected, and unwelcome, cold snap is (psychologically) that bit harder to deal with.

I recall snow in March and April not that long ago. Not pleasant at all. Last year we had a mild winter and an early spring. It was very welcome given the upheaval we were going through. But hopefully we get time to enjoy our garden this year more.

I think that you will manage to enjoy - and derive considerable enjoyment from - your garden a lot more this year.

Such sad news, AFB..... Really sorry to hear this.

As for weather, I was happily enjoying yesterday's mid-50's and although it's a little cooler today and cloudy rather than sunny, it's still nice enough -- and then I looked at the weather predictions and saw that we'll be getting some more of the White Stuff -- fortunately, again only around three inches, max, but still. Even though February only has 28 days sometimes it seems like the longest month!!!
