Just got news that a friend of mine who I have known for several years, a friend that truly welcomed me into the community I live in and introduced me to many new friends, has passed away due to Covid. May he rest in peace, and may this Covid sh-t be soon behind us.
Ahh so sorry to read this please accept my profound sympathy for your loss.

I am contemplating changing my health regiment to be centered on coffee consumption based on the most up-to-date scientific research -- of course this is subject to change until the next scientific paper is published.

Don't forget that, this week, red wine is back on the good list, but you have to drink about 200 bottles a day to get measurable benefits.

Red meat is back on, so long as it is desert-bred kangaroo and/or camel, as both are lean, low-cholesterol, free-range, organic and gluten-free.

Also cornflakes, so long as you ditch the cornflakes and just eat the packet.

As are eggs and cheese.

It has been about a year since the world started getting seriously worried about Covid-19. Let's appreciate what normality is, let's appreciate how important small things are, let's appreciate every moment with our friends or beloved ones as they can leave us any second - or we might leave them. Let's focus on what's important and meaningful.

All of this transcends politics or ideology - there is a time for all sorts of debates independently on where someone is coming from. We might discuss and argue, but let's not forget what's truly important. Covid can serve as a stark reminder that things should not be taken for granted. Going to the groceries is not a given. Going to a gym is not a given. Having dinner with friends is not a given. Going to the park is not a given. Going on vacation is not a given. Even a cup of coffee is not a given (or in the US, toilet paper is not a given!). Heck, MacRumors is not a given.

So thank you all for who you are. I don't know any of you in real life, but I count you among my blessings. This forum (esp. this subforum) truly helped in the past year.

I had never truly - or fully - appreciated and savoured the small - but quite wonderful - pleasures of life (enjoying a coffee, going to the park, walking by the sea, attending a concert, having dinner with family or friends, a beer in a pub, a glass of wine in a wine bar, browsing in a bookshop, browsing the racks of CDs in a music shop, in the days when we had music shops, and, yes, foreign holidays) until I worked abroad in some of the most dysfunctional places on the planet, where such things are not possible.

And yes, Covid has brought - or driven - that lesson home even more emphatically.

Agreed: Take the time to focus on what matters, and on who matters, - let them know that they matter - and take the time to appreciate, relish and savour such small pleasures; above all, take the time to live in the moment, in the present, rather than dwelling in the past, or fretting about the future.

This is not worth starting a thread over but, is mp4 audio a codec like h.264 or is it a container like .mkv and .mp4? If its a container then what is the codec?

I just thank goodness the staff and people in our condo complex in Manila have been so diligent and responsible such that I can take my daughters swimming without fear. We have a totally COVID free complex right now. Outside the pool we all wear face masks and face shields its mandatory. Inside our condo complex it feels like a little oasis of almost normality. Outside, well it is not good.

Snow; electric blankets.......bed......hibernation.
Amen to that, I still bike despite the cold as I get stri crazy otherwise what with my home "office" but it is decidely unpleasant. I surprise my friends as I don't feel very Canadian but feel my Mediterranean heritage coming through.

So glad to hear it! What is the status of the vaccination program over there? I mean I can guess what a highly populated devloping country would be but still.

It must be quite hard to be a cat person (see left <--)
Having to lie about all day, waiting for a member of staff to turn up to do your bidding....

I am beginning to understand why lady cats are called queens.

A stray thought cropped up when I was writing in another thread --

Larry the No 10 Downing St Cat, is a-political, and has had a series of Prime Ministers serve under him.

I brought this week's weigh in forward by a day. 11 Stone 10 lb 6 oz or 164lb, 74.66kg depending how you look at these things. So that's the lightest I've been in my adult life. A very happy AFB.

But why did I weigh myself a day early? Because the fish and chip van comes to the next village on a Saturday! Guess what I'm having for dinner!

Cool I am 79 kg and was 89 kg at the start of 2020. I do need to lose some more - funny thing is my electric bike was stolen this summer and I used the insurance money to buy an excellent manual bike on sale which has helped immensely. Actually being on a budget tied with restaurant closings has also helped.

Mine is down to the AW. I eat out no more or less than before the lockdown. Haven’t been out for a meal with Mrs AFB for more than a decade I’d imagine.

Well, your business trips abroad have been curtailed on account of Covid (as have mine), and those occasional meals you would have had with friends in pubs are also firmly located in the past tense, for now. (As are mine).

Enjoyed my electric blanket last night.

Indeed I have had a lot less work trips out, but I'm not very often in a restaurant pre or post Covid. Not compared to some anyway. Some of my colleagues would eat out 1-2 times a week plus takeaway's. Then of course they moan that they will never be able to afford a house and it was alright for my generation. Then they leave in their brand new car that's a lease hire. Makes me laugh.
When we were saving our deposit to buy our first house we spent no money except food, rent and bills. Everything else was cut from the budget.

But, I think that people are psychologically wired differently from one another - it is not just a question of "financial responsibility" but is also to do with one's temperament.

For example, for you, Mrs AFB fulfills - or meets - more or less all of your emotional needs.

However, for some who are more extroverted, that is not the case.

I'm pretty introverted, in fact, exceedingly so, but a year without seeing anyone socially outside the house - and inside, Decent Brother was home for five days late last summer and - over the course of the year - I have hosted perhaps three or four other different people (the cheesemonger, a friend who does some shopping for me, a friend whose mother had died), during various visiting windows between the respective lockdowns - is not especially healthy, psychologically, not when your professional world is also in a state of suspended animation, as well.
