Irn Bru...... A few years ago I heard about this beverage and since I was at that point all enthused about many things Scottish, I wanted to try it. Don't remember now where I finally got ahold of what was supposed to be the authentic Irn Bru, but I stashed the container in the fridge and then one day got it out and opened it. Poured some into a glass and took my first sip...and a second.... Ehhhhh...... Well, let's just say that I didn't come anywhere near finishing off that Irn Bru and the rest went down the sink. Glad to have had the experience, but thanks just the same, in the future if it is offered to me, I'll pass!
Artificial sweeteners in drinks and foods..... To me there is something too "chemical" tasting (some sort of what I perceive as an unpleasant aftertaste) in diet sodas, and I just don't like that. Going beyond that, though, in the past I have had unpleasant physical reactions to drinking or eating anything with Nutrasweet or one of the other artificial sweeteners. Seems to do funny things to my blood sugar levels or my insulin levels; never worked that out exactly through to an actual clinical explanation as to what actually does happen, but I just prefer to simply avoid that scenario.
I'll just stick with the regular (albeit naturally-sugared) versions of the soft drinks or other products, thanks! Actually, it is a pretty much moot point since I rarely partake of soft drinks, anyway, I'm much happier with coffee, iced tea, natural juices and water on an everyday basis anyway.
When many years ago I was in treatment for Anorexia Nervosa, this avoidance of artificially sweetened products really astonished the clinicians, as it was pretty much the "norm" that clients would need to be weaned off caffeine and also so-called "diet drinks" and artificial sweetener-containing "diet foods". The weaning-off of caffeine (in my case, coffee) wasn't fun but for me it wasn't nearly as difficult as it was for others who were used to consuming loads (several liters) of artificially-sweetened, caffeine-laden "soft drinks" each day.
I would be asked, "but how could and would you willingly drink something sugar-laden such as fruit juice every day?" and my answer was simple: it satisfied my hunger urges, at least for a while, and I could go for longer periods where I didn't need to bother with eating (what I perceived as) calorie-laden food.....
