I can't believe I'm giving Avid more money. And honestly, I can't believe I'm giving Avid money at all, they're such a horrible company.

Do something about it, then.

That is the conclusion that I came to about Amazon, for a variety of reasons.

So, I took the decision that they could earn their income elsewhere.

These days, I buy books in book-shops, (bricks'n'mortar book shops) or, I borrow them from the library.

Okay, but unfortunately, it's not that simple. of course I wish I could stop using it, but given the fact that I use their software as a production tool, and more rarely (but still relevantly) as a teaching tool, it might take me awhile to find a suitable alternative.

On the topic of Amazon though, I haven't used it since 2019, and don't plan on using it anytime else in the future, I think you probably know why (probably for many of the same reasons why you stopped using it).

Has anyone here ever tried the reMarkable (possible v. 2) tablet?
No idea what that is. But it does remind me of a time I was doing remote IT support for my Mum. She was having issues with her iPad. After about 20 minutes of her saying it didn’t do what I said it would, I discovered her iPad wasn’t. It was some cheap tablet from Tesco.

Another time I was giving my Dad IT support. He lives a few hours away and he was explaining the problem. I decided to set up a team viewer session with him. Took me about 45 minutes for him to find the green button to try now. Why? Because his browser was taking up 50% of the screen. Every time he got asked did he want to download a web search option to his browser he said yes. It had loads of them!

My parents shouldn’t be allowed near anything connected online!

😂

The reMarkable is an eInk tablet (with stylus). Limited in functionalities, but it prevents people from staring at a screen while working on notes, docs, ebooks, PDF’s, emails etc.

Being self employed I'm increasingly feeling the same way about the software I'm compelled to use. Increasingly expensive, buggy and they're now dictating working practices. I've often thought we're starting to head back to a feudal system where your working assets and tools are all now owned by fabulously wealthy offshore barons over which even your government has no control... Agh, the more I think about it the more parallels I see... I guess I can't rant much more specifically on here anymore but I think it's time to actually change my user name to Wat Tyler...

Wat Tyler would be an exceptionally apt user name, in my not quite humble opinion.

Phoned the organic-ethical-environmentally aware butcher who has a stall in the Saturday farmers' market to place an order for the sort of stuff that will not be stocked unless you order it well in advance (stuff such as oxtail, or shin on the bone).

Yesterday, I realised that - indeed, for the past few days - I realised that I am fantasising about stuff such as burgers, or steak, or meat - and that I haven't had meat (apart from guanciale in carbonara or related dishes) for weeks and weeks, as I rarely eat meat.

Actually, I realised that I am craving meat, - and, when I find myself desiring meat in such a ludicrous manner, it is generally a signal that I ought to consume some.

Enjoy your meat. We have chicken most days as it’s one of a few things that Mrs AFB can tolerate. But we only have one chicken breast between the two of us. Tonight’s dinner came with rice, broccoli and peas. Mine had a sweet and sour sauce. Mrs AFB’s came as it was.

She’s been off all day so not sure if she had anything else. Probably not.

In my personal opinion, nothing mean or disrespectful if you eat things which Mrs. AFB cannot. I would find it quite boring to only eat what my wife has to eat due to her situation. But that is me...

I don’t always. But mostly I do. It’s a pretty miserable existence for her, so me sat there eating something that’s a lot more tasty isn’t very thoughtful.
Also it’s easier to cook one lot of food.
I’m not much of a foodie tbh. It’s just fuel.

Thank you.

I requested that they prepare some shin meat on the bone (the sort of thing that requires four or five hours slow cooking) - that is something you must order in advance; I shall probably prepare some version of a ragù, or boeuf bourguignon with it.

And, since you mentioned it, I think that some chicken (free range, organic etc) thighs may also be called for.

Perhaps a few lamb chops, to prepare a Greek style dish.

I was talking socially. I go to the office a couple of times a week. I think that’s about the right mix for me.
I also go into the office two times a week. What I've found is that the night before a day in the office I cannot sleep. When I go into the office I get up at 6am (as opposed to 7:30-8:30). This is to avoid the rush hour traffic as I cannot stand driving in heavy traffic. I think that because I know I "have to" get up at 6 it prevents me from properly "dropping off". I was never like this before COVID when I used to get up at 6 every morning to go to the office. Working from home however has significantly improved my sleep. Those two days though....

Yes, I have. I thought it was good but the lack of a backlight made it not suitable for me. I now use the Kindle Scribe which does have a backlight and the added benefit of being able to store 1000's of books. The Scribe is also cheaper.

I get up at 5:50 when I’m in the office (tomorrow). I get up at 6:30 when I’m WFH.
But mostly because I run 4-5 miles in the morning.
My sleep is all over the place.
I start early at 8 regardless of if I’m in the office or at home.

Whenever I have had an early start (to catch a train, or plane, or bus, something with deadlines), - although I normally tend to sleep exceptionally well - I have had this experience, also.

The only saving grace is that - precisely because I have the gift of sleep - once I am on that bus, plane, train, I have no difficulty in snatching a further hour or two of snooze time.

Yes! I love my RM2, use it every day at work. It is honestly untouched as a 'pen & paper replacement' - it works perfectly in any situation where a pen & paper would work. Notebooks are flexible and nested notebooks let you organize, layers allow incredible powerful, the depth of pen types and stroke sensitivity make things work well for just about any use case.

I have the Scribe and Remarkable, and I would argue that the Scribe is a great Kindle but a mediocre Remarkable, whereas the Remarkable is a superlative Remarkable and a mediocre Kindle. The Scribe is not competitive as a 'pen & paper replacement' for anything but trivial use - no layers, inflexible templates, mediocre pens, strangely insensitive sensitivity, and on and on.

Obviously everyone has different use cases, my point is that the Scribe and Remarkable look to be competitors, but they really aren't if you REALLY care about notebooks, you have exactly one choice. (similarly, my Scribe is my go-to Kindle at this point because the screen is gorgeous)

Thank you both. I’ll probably end up buying one, but no backlight is crazy.

Yeah, for me, it's pressure from the industry/because it's "what everyone else uses," which tbh is so stupid. But I feel that way after both talking to a LOT of people in the industry (because I know a lot of people), and watching videos about it. Everyone says you "should" use such and such software, because it's the "industry standard." And the worst part is, they're all so expensive!!

But I say f**k "industry standards" because I can make my own individual decision about what hardware/software I use. I've tried to be true to my word, but I haven't fully abandoned "industry standards" yet.
