:apple: 8-core/2.4GHz, ordered day 1. Delivered in RI today. There was another one on the same truck for another lucky person!

HD: Western Digital Caviar Black
Memory: Hynix
Processors and RAM are on the same card. I was expecting a riser card.
 
Those with a 6 core 3.33, can you tell which 3 memory slots are the tri-channel memory slots and which one is the extra one?

DDR3 on a riser is a tricky affair.

Also, my quad is STILL IN HONG KONG!
 
Those with a 6 core 3.33, can you tell which 3 memory slots are the tri-channel memory slots and which one is the extra one?

The originally installed 3 x 1 GB chips were installed in the forward 3 slots (towards the open side) so it is a good guess that those are the tri-channel slots.

You're making the assumption that memory slots are hard-wired to specific memory channels and I don't believe that's the case.

I think all four slots are wired to all three channels and that slots populated with DIMMs are allocated to specific channels at system initialization time in order to get the best interleave factor (two or three).

I know that idea will be hard to sell to most people; I'll find sources to prove (or disprove) this.

(Of course if my damn machine wasn't sitting on its ass in a Hong Kong warehouse I could easily prove it just by moving a couple of DIMMS around).

Not according to Apple or Intel. It's first 3 = tri-channel and putting in a 4th drops it to single channel. This is what high level apple techs and high level intel techs told me. I've pressed really hard to get a straight answer from Apple on this. They are standing by this explanation apparently.

I think they are hard wired. Check out this Intel document. Also, the Apple User Manual for the 2010 Mac Pro recommends that you fill the slots in order:
If you install equal-size DIMMs (for example, all 1 GB DIMMS or all 2 GB DIMMS) in your quad-core or 6-core Mac Pro, Apple recommends that you fill the slots in the order listed in the table.

Most of those were expedited orders. The average HK stay for normal shipping is already exceeded by at least a half a day. It's clear that they made a decision to hold it there for one extra day. Both my standard shipped iphone 4 order and last mac pro were only in HK one day.

On my prior order last month, the next entry was "arrived at Fed Ex Alaska", so it could already be in the air or leave at any time and it might not post until it arrives. Then again, it could be sitting in HK till tomorrow.

I think 4 sticks is dual channel on the lastest Xeons. From my reading, the Westmere can address 2 DIMMs per channel. You may be stuck with single channel if you chose the older Nehalem processor.
 
My guess is the next batch is coming over on FDX98 (HKG->PANC) for delivery in the first half of next week. Nothing official, but it seems like the likely candidate.

They say not on the single cpu board. I wish it was but no matter how hard I pressed, Apple stuck to the 3 channel + 1 position which Intel backs up. The Intel retail workstation board used for this exact W3680 CPU is a WX58BP. Check the specs. (page 35)

Mine's been in a warehouse in Hong Kong for over 27 hours now! RAGE!!

Same here... I wonder if they flights are grounded or if Apple is shipping so many of these things that they don't have the flights to get them out daily? A Mac Pro is a rather hefty thing to ship.
 
for the ones set for 8/24, there is still plenty f time to make that, at least for another day or 2 max.

I wonder why they would do that when the memory controller on the processor can handle 2 DIMMs per channel at full speed.

I do see the section you mention, though, where they say adding memory to that slot will result in reduced performance, but they do not explicitly say that it drops to single channel. They are very ambigous about what happens. They make that note specifically in the tripple channel configuration. They mark those 2 DIMM slotes as sharing a channel while the remaining 2 are each given their own channel, which sort of makes me believe that the one channel is interleaved while the other 2 are not.

What do you think?

I'll be surprised if most of us don't see updates around 8 or 9pm EST with our packages on US soil.

I figure Alaska today, Memphis overnight, and then wherever they're headed over the weekend. Not to worry everyone, they're still coming :)

They also have a non-stop from Hong Kong to Memphis. That was what mine was on yesterday. It went to Memphis, then my local sort facility, and then at my house at 8:30am. There is still hope for a Friday delivery for some.
