I wonder why they would do that when the memory controller on the processor can handle 2 DIMMs per channel at full speed.
I do see the section you mention, though, where they say adding memory to that slot will result in reduced performance, but they do not explicitly say that it drops to single channel. They are very ambigous about what happens. They make that note specifically in the tripple channel configuration. They mark those 2 DIMM slotes as sharing a channel while the remaining 2 are each given their own channel, which sort of makes me believe that the one channel is interleaved while the other 2 are not.
What do you think?
I only say that because ..... my new Mac Pro seems to want to stay there for a while!!!!! Come on and get on with it already!!! Come see the warm beaches and Mickey Mouse, and the alligators, and the inside of my office!! You'll love it. I promise!

I pressed Intel also about this and they insist 4 slots in this particular board will send it to single channel. Clearly the best config is 3 slots with the highest capacity that will work. If we can get 8gb modules to work in this board then 24gb should be about it. They have 4 slots for those that need more ram no matter what performance level they expect. It is kind of a weird choice but that is what apple went with and probably because Intel doesn't have too many options for the W3680 cpu.
Finally, it has arrived!!!
Sweet!Finally, it has arrived!!!
I bought 6-core one with Standard config. This morning, at 09:30 Pacific time, it has arrived to my home in LA!!!
Any Logic users who are getting new machines, how many CPUs does Logic show and how does the app run?

Crap. Are you telling me that my 4x 2GB memory sticks are going to be slowing down the machine? If that's the case, I'll seriously consider installing only three of the four sticks to get the speed increase. (And perhaps try it with all four for a bit to see if there's any practical difference.)
Sweet. How about some benchmarks.
The difference is probably measured in milliseconds. Surely having 2GB more physical RAM is going to bet better than 6GB 3 channel. If you run out of physical RAM you start hitting the HD for virtual memory and then you get some real slow downs.
Still waiting for my machine so I'd like to tell you once I get it.

This is torture, I hate hong kong and I hate fedex.
Mine just went to "intl shipment received, Anchorage, AK"! Looks like it got on today's flight! Anyone else have a box on that plane?
Now, I have used Geekbench 32 Bits...
