The problem with the software the TV manufacturers put in their TV is that they don't keep it up to date + there is no guarantee that all the streaming services are available for the TV you have bought, it depends on which operating system is used. Of course, with Google's system it's no problem, but then we have Samsung with their Tizen or whatever they call it.

I have a Samsung 65" top model from 2021, and there are several "local" apps I can download for it, which in addition to the fact that it was the top model, the software is stuttering, and poor and impossible to type quickly on .Apple TV is faster, fluid, and has all the apps I need, so I never use my TV's built-in software. But if the TV manufacturers get it under control, I agree - then Apple TV will be redundant.

Maybe Apple should make a TV interface for the TV manufacturers, just as they make CarPlay for the cars.
LG have announced this year that their 2024 TVs will get WebOS updates for 5 years (WebOS Renew)

What are you doing that causes your Apple TV to throttle? I’ve never experienced any of that behavior. It’s vastly overpowered then most media streaming devices.

I bet you their issues is network related and have nothing to do with the device itself.
There have been widespread reports of the latest AppleTV throttling when playing games

I still using my Apple TV HD. Wow 2015, I didn't realise I had it that long already. My TV is not 4K and in UK TV catch up on demand none is 4K and I refused pay over £100 for Disney+ to get 4K since I don't have 4K TV so paying middle plan for 1080p HD. Eventually I will update new TV with 4K then I will get 4K Apple TV (whatever latest version be called then) but no rush since not much I can watch in 4K except if I want to pay over £100 for Disney+. Right now I got far more important device need be updated first like my iPad Pro 9.7 with dying battery then my Apple Watch Series 4 with dying battery.

Even though I not going get next new Apple TV but I am still very interested what Apple put in and what new features might be.

When the Internet is good, the need for the AV1 codec is reduced to zero.
And doing H264/265 to AV1 squeezing is also not good. The original quality will still be better.

As with most of apples hardware lately, the software is what needs updating. The Apple TV is also in the camp. The hardware is just fine, but the bugs across the board of all their devices is what really needs work.
And Lossless pass through audio API access for 3rd party apps (like the nVidia Shield).

Only for Atmos. But, Personally, I choose AppleTV based on the combination of advantages, convenience, stability and technical support :)

The A17 Pro has AV1 hardware on chip; so I would bet they'll include it in the next update.

Question though - storage is cheap. Why bother reencoding to save a bit of space? The time-value doesn't seem to be there. I personally prefer remuxes to keep everything as close to original as possible, and let Plex transcode as needed. Yea they take up a ton of space and it's arguably inefficient, but storage is cheaper than ever and a good NAS + Plex Server can use less power combined than a lightbulb.
You’re not using led bulbs are you lol

I have an HD that’s on its last legs as the Bluetooth is giving out and my wife uses it for workouts, which means it disconnects from the watch during workouts. She’s about ready to toss out the window. If the new ones were $99 I would have already bought one. As it is, even the 1st gen 4K is over $100 on eBay. It holds its value very well.

Faster Chip

The next Apple TV will be equipped with a faster processor compared to the current model, according to Gurman's report last year.
Who would imagine that? A new generation with a faster chip? Gurman is a genius!

If they came up with a Apple TV Pro and the difference was a M3 Chip whcih turned it into a gaming powerhouse, i'd probbaly buy it

Maybe the new AppleTV will finally get an OLED display that you can use while your neck and head are recuperating from a vigorous Apple Vision Pro session.

I love my Apple TV (and sold my Shield), but I really want Plex decoding of DTSX and DD Atmos profiles.

And it’s not for piracy… I just chose to rip my discs for convenience and posterity.

Uhh...WHY does it need updating ?
It still works, it still does everything that is needed. There can be an argument made that the software needs fixing, but the hardware ?

I still use the previous generations of ATVs, they still do what is needed of them.

Get OFF this "upgrade conveyer", all it is doing to creating more e-waste.

Lets get back to upgradeable, repairable , well before disposable.

24/96 support or better
native pass-thru of audio, why lock it to 48
AV1 native support
BT 5.3 LC3
do not add a fan back, make it larger if needed (heat sink)

I do not have cable, so it’s my primary set top box.
I bought Infuse Pro, dumped Plex.
I bought File Browser Pro (stratospherix) scoops up anything that Infuse has issues with.

started with the 720p version in 2010 🥰

If Apple could come up with the killer home karaoke package for the ATV, that could be a game-changer. A couple of decent wireless microphones, an intuitive mixer, and decent speakers are all you need. Of course, karaoke might be a limited market (for reasons unknown to me.)

When does it throttle? I haven't noticed this.

The ATV4K3 throttles on games and some non-game apps such as Plex with HDR content. It is a known issue, but if you don't play a lot of games or use apps that are impacted then you would never know about the thermal throttling issue.

There are games that have better performance on the older ATV4K2 with A12 than on the newer ATV4K3 with the A15 due to the ATV4K3 not having a fan. MrMacRight on YouTube has some videos showing the differences.

Here is a screenshot from a system utility app on tvOS. Spelling aside, it only takes a few minutes of a graphically-demanding game to see it go from normal to high:
Hot ATV4K3.jpeg

Not sure if Plex is still having issues, but the developer said they were working on a fix. The behavior is also present on the older ATV4K1 and ATV4K2, but the impact isn't noticed as the active cooling kept the device cool. The passively-cooled A15 in the ATV4K3 quickly becomes too hot.

With games, it can be really bad.

I keep a heatsink with built-in fan sitting on top of my ATV4K3. It looks ridiculous, but works great to keep the temps down enough to prevent thermal throttling for over an hour of playing games. The fan is plugged into a HomeKit smart plug, and I just tell Siri on my ATV to turn on the ATV fan when I start playing certain games.

Sad photo:
ATV4K3 needs aactive cooling.jpeg

I can say with 100% certainty that the A15 in the ATV4K3 does thermal throttle, and it is not a not a networking issue.

When you play Wreckfest longer than 5 minutes on settings looking at least decent.
My experience with Wreckfest as well, sometimes in just a few minutes it becomes unplayable.

With the active-cooling heatsink that I use, I can get over an hour of playing with decent settings. I first tried a passive-cooled heatsink sitting on top of the ATV, and for Wreckfest, I could get about 10 minutes of playtime before thermal throttling. This prompt me to try one with a fan, and it improved things greatly.

Just sad that people had to resort to putting heatsinks on top of their ATV4K3.

I’d love to be able to download 4k movies to my apple TV so I wouldn’t be dependent on my horrible internet for streaming. This probably doesn’t matter for most US residents, but for those living in countries with bad internet or government throttled internet, it would be a game changer.

So many comments and almost no-one touching the real problems of the ATV today.
So let me elaborate on what's missing as a multimedia central:

  1. Hardware ( in order of importance ):
    • 192 kHz / 24 bit output via SPDif
    • Smaller version like the Fire TV Stick 4k Max with built in battery for mobile use at meetings
    • AV1 hardware acceleration
    • Version with built in display for home automation - kind of a iPad for home use only
    • two HDMI ports - one for the TV and one for the projector
  2. Software:
    • roon ready certification ( I am using currently the WIIM PRO for that as a separate device )
    • better switching between different remotes enabling to use with the ATV remote many other devices simultaneously
    • Better home support and interface
  3. eco system
    • different form factors
    • more attention to design
    • more interfaces
I love my ATV and use it as my main device for media consumption except for HighEnd Audio since it even does not support the Apple Music highres output which is a serious flaw of the current version.

So I'll have to use A WIIM PRO for audio and a FireTV 4k Max for traveling and sm iPad for the home App ...

Many services could be integrated in the ATV and it would add so much perceived advantage but Apple seems to treat the ATV as a cheap streaming device - I would pay early 500 or 800 USD for a premium device that offers my requested services since I really dislike so many different devices that I have to update and maintain and administrate. The ATV could be THE HOME device everyone is using provided you're looking for a High End central in your home.

just my 2 ct
