I think it depends on how they plan to support data to the display. Will it have an iSight camera? USB and TB port hub on the back? These are the kinds of things we expect now on Apple displays. HDMI is fine for compatibility but that single Thunderbolt cable is elegant.
That's very true, I didn't really consider the camera in particular. I really hope their display supports HDMI 2.1, but this might be reason enough that they continue with Thunderbolt ports only.

Really interested to see all the pro gear in the next 12 months anyway. Really hoping for a surprise in this event beyond just the MBPs, would love to see either new iMacs or an Apple display.

Me thinks you do not understand what the word "Pro" means.

The slightly upgraded MacBook Airs that Apple has been passing off as pro models for the past several years are just sad. The one exception being the 16 inch 2019 MB Pro which at least has a decent enough cooling system to run at something close to it's full potential. Though even it is lacking in ports.
Pro is mearly a branding term used by apple to designate their higher end products. Touch some grass.

I’ve got a 2019 16” that I’d LOVE to trade in/sell to get this one, but I’ve got to make sure everything backed up/ported over.

Pretty excited to see how this new one is for sure!

There's simply no reason to skip including ports on machines like these unless they are like 20 years old. Adding more functionality in no way harms a machine in any meaningful way, and I'd also not even visually since they are on the side of your computer.
You are wrong. There is a very logical reason to NOT include these LIMITED FUNCTION ports. They prevent the optimal use of the internal volume of this tightly packed device. Every precious cubic millimeter needs to be considered, especially in regards to where it relates to other functions. The very areas where these older holes would be located is better utilized internally for speaker performance (bass resonance), and/or maximizing layout for battery or thermal systems.

I am totally relaxed, trust me and I am truly enjoying the reactions to my desire to not bring legacy ports back ... life is good
If I go buy a TV right this second, it will only have HDMI inputs. If I buy a monitor, it will most likely only have HDMI and DP. So it's not a legacy port.

Beefier version of the M1 and ability to plug into monitors are both looking nice. I might buy it.

Apple today announced it will be holding a virtual event on Monday, October 18 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, and rumors widely suggest that redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models will be unveiled with a faster version of the M1 chip.

After the event was announced, a few readers asked us when to expect orders to begin for the new MacBook Pro models, should they be announced.

While nothing is for certain until Apple says so, almost all new Macs announced at an Apple Event over the last five years were made available to order on the same day of the event. The only exception was the 24-inch iMac earlier this year.

We left the iMac Pro and the latest Mac Pro out of the list because these machines were previewed during WWDC keynotes many months before they were ready to launch.
  • 2016: The first MacBook Pro models with the Touch Bar were announced at an Apple Event on Thursday, October 27, 2016 and became available to order on the same day. Shipments began in 2-3 weeks, with customers beginning to receive their orders around Monday, November 14.
  • 2017: New MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac models were announced at WWDC on Monday, June 5, 2017. All of the new Macs became available to order on the same day and began arriving to customers on Wednesday, June 7.
  • 2018: New MacBook Air and Mac mini models were announced at an Apple Event on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. Both new Macs became available to order on the same day and began arriving to customers on Wednesday, November 7.
  • 2020: The first Macs with the M1 chip, including the MacBook Air, lower-end 13-inch MacBook Pro, and lower-end Mac mini, were announced at an Apple Event on Tuesday, November 10, 2020. All of the new Macs became available to order on the same day and began arriving to customers on Tuesday, November 17.
  • 2021: The colorful new 24-inch iMac with the M1 chip was announced at an Apple Event on Tuesday, April 20, 2021 and became available to order on Friday, April 30. The new iMac began arriving to customers on Friday, May 21.
New Macs announced with a press release on Apple Newsroom also typically become available to order on the same day of the announcement, including the 16-inch MacBook Pro in 2019 and the latest 27-inch iMac in August 2020.

While the 24-inch iMac broke the trend of same-day ordering for new Macs, likely due to pandemic-related supply chain issues, it remains to be seen if the new MacBook Pro models will follow suit with delayed ordering. At a minimum, customers interested in an M1X MacBook Pro likely won't have to set a Friday morning alarm like for iPhones.

y teh hell do we need a HDMI cable ..now in 2022? displayport/stick to usb C so many hubs and ports,..

so you havn't used a MBP produced between 2016 and now??
I have ... and I don't need legacy port in my laptop ...
Yes. I use one at work, and it sucks. First the butterfly keyboard, so I got a replacement, but USB-C is still irritating. We even have USB-C monitors at work, but for whatever reason they don't work with the 2019 model in particular. And the display dongles never work reliably. Everything about it works in theory but not practice, except for the USB-A dongles, which work but are just stupid compared to having the ports on my laptop. And of course the Touchbar sucks.

There's a reason I use a 2014 model at home, it's better.

While I always want it the same day, I usually have the discipline to wait another 6 months before ordering, to let others get all infancy issues. My only exception was a B&W G3... years ago (in early 1999), and it was a pain to have it stabilised by Apple (motherboard issues).

This is gonna be day one, hour one, minute one for so many loyal Mac users who have waited years…

I don’t see how they can fully undo the damage of the Touchbar era, but this will likely go a long way.
I won't be upgrading my M1 MacBook Pro unless the new ones have Touch Bar. So its horses for courses. You hate the Touch Bar, I use it everyday and don't want a machine without one. I do wish Apple would properly implement it across all product lines though, then I can have it on my magic keyboard and I would then dock my laptop more!

Currently using one and it's missing a ton of "pro" features, like an sdcard slot, f keys and a cpu that doesn't throttle at the first sign of danger. I'm also tired of needing a dongle to do literally anything.

It really depends what "pro" you are, there are many professions. I'm definitely a "pro" and have used the 2016, 2018 MacBook Pro as well as my latest machine which is the M1 MacBook Pro. All our docks at work are USB-C, we dock to get to the projectors (=USB-C) so I've not encountered the issue of requiring HDMI to project except on a couple of rare occasions I have been at other businesses (which I used a dongle for). The majority of our connection requirements at work are satisfied either using Wi-Fi (to access corporate LAN) or bluetooth/airdrop.

Its swings and roundabouts really, you think its not "pro" to have a million different ports on a machine, some of them quite legacy. I, on the other hand, think its quite absurd that in 2021 we still have a million different port types when we only need one. My business, and myself personally, made the commitment to switch to USB-C over 5 years ago and life has been sweet ever since.

Like I said, each to his own, and his own 'profession'. In mine, if you plugged a USB-A device into your computer you would probably be laughed out the room.

This discussion is hillarious. Apple obviously has stats how often a specific port is used by Pro users. Probably, it turned out SD was not so popular among Pro users 😱😱😱 And probably, they consider SD fanatics as not really influential/important group of consumers. But that’s impossible, because you guys consider yourself THE ONLY PROS, right? xD

And for real, Apple should built-in all the popular ports used for presentations? xD
I stopped using HDMI since circa 2016, when most of major coporations and bigger companies I’ve worked for started to use DisplayPorts almost exclusively in their conference rooms. Ohh, I remeber all those shocked “professionals” relying on just their laptops inputs waiting for the Client’s IT to bring them… The adapter! 😅 I guess it wasn’t really a random decision by Apple that time xD Of course, some still use HDMI and some idiots still use VGA, but why the hell I need them in my laptop all the time? Useless ports 90% of the time. It would also be a complication in design perspective.

Anyway, Apple does tons of market research. Your ever-complaining as*es are well accounted for and not cared about, trust me 😇

So excited for this release and can't wait to see how much of a beast these new Pros are...

However given my past few experiences with day one buys (especially my 16" MBP which has been a *very* disappointing machine with no fixes for the GPU issues) I'll let others discover any possible issues (and possibly wait for one revision) before I buy a machine I need to live with for ~3 years...

Hopefully it'll be smooth sailing, but given the 5000Eur jet engine sounding room heater I'm typing this on... I'll wait a bit.

Please no HDMI!!!! no need for that bs. I do want an SD card though, really don't understand how that one was ever removed, was real weird considering camera form factors 🤔

I'm sorry, but if you are referring to hdmi and sd card as "legacy" ports, it's proof that you aren't doing professional work. Photographers are dying for an sdcard port. If you do any type of public speaking or presenting, an hdmi will make a tremendous difference. Just because you don't use them, doesn't make them legacy.
I agree with you on SD ports, but HDMI is not needed whatsoever. If you are speaking somewhere that doesn't have a USB C cable, then don't bother 😂 get with the times, even my public UNI has replaces all the computers/projectors with USB C displays or at least replaced the HDMI Male to Male cable with a USB C male to HDMI male cable.
