Because Apple is a consumer product company that makes money based on change. Forcing you to update makes them money.

And Apple has been doing this for a long, long time. Even before the iPhone. The original iMac came without a floppy drive. Users were angry.

Apple cut off support and security updates for OS X 10.5.8, despite the fact that there is a small but very much alive community of PowerPC enthusiasts (of which I am part). Apple continues to slowly dismantle protocols and products and services that we use. All in an effort to force us, finally, to upgrade to Intel Macs.

It shouldn't matter what we do with old devices or what systems we want to run on them, but Apple wants to control the experience and it wants to keep everyone together at roughly the same level. Again, forcing people to move forward means more sales for Apple.

Thanks though for the great information as always eyoungren :)

No I get some like it. I just can't see why. Its absolutely awful. But that is my opinion. Hopefully Apple brings it back one day.

So here's the thing, iO6's long-standing, never-changing UI was the #1 complaint from tech enthusiasts and the #1 ammunition from Android users hating on Apple's phones. I read many times over people saying, "Apple's iOS6 is drab, boring and has been the same for so long". Now, these people were not saying it didn't look good because iOS6 did look good but it was getting boring and Apple had to move on especially if they want to get some Android switchers.

I personally loved iOS 7 and iOS8 will be good once the bug patches are sent out. I like the clean, uncluttered look.

iOS 6 looks like crap.

Source: Just look at it.
Well, ok. iOS 6 crap or Fisher Price/Playskool unicorn puke. Doesn't much matter which end at that point I think as it amounts to the same if we buy your analogy. :D

Which I don't by the way, I like the look of iOS 6. But we're all different in what we like - or don't like. :)

Hal, just call me Erik. We're friends now. :D

I've said it before and I'll say it again. At first I was so against iOS 7s look, but now I prefer it over the "classic" look. iOS 6 looks extremely cheesy to me now. It looks old and outdated. The photo-realistic icons just look weird to me now.

The only thing I wish they'd change about iOS is to put drop shadows under the icons again. It's hard to find a wallpaper where the icons don't get extremely lost in it due to the wide variety of icon colors and contrast. Too dark of a wallpaper and the black icons disappear and too bright, the white icons disappear. Too blue and the blue icons disappear and so on. Simple drop shadows will add a little contrast between the icons to make them stand out a little more.

Weird thing is, the promo images of iOS 7 had drop shadows under the icons, but for some reason they didn't release it like that.

You may have just given me the one thing I might actually like about iOS 7!

Not having the dropshadows means I don't have to use Winterboard to kill them!

I mean, eventually flat is going to look tired and old.

Exactly - from the beginning their "modern" looks rather dated to me... Reminded me of old HTML 1.1 sites (or craigslist)!

Anyway now that things are "flat" how are they going to improve on it - can't really make it flatter unless they plan on going back to B&W!! They will slowly bring back more gradients and shadows and that will be the new "modern". :)

Besides that I still think the default 7/8 is extreme hard on the eyes. At least they have added the options for "Bold Text" and "Button Shapes" which look better and are easier on the eyes.

Yeah 6 definitely looked better. The only thing I love about iOS 7 is the multitasking. I hate tapping the little red X away for each app in 6. I always found that a pain.

I split down the middle. On a small screened iPhone or iPod touch, looking at the prior design language looks garish and proportionally awkward compared to iOS 7/8. On a small screen, the newer design just looks cleaner and much better proportioned. Going from my iPhone to my old iPod touch (still running iOS 5), it seems like a huge step backwards.

OTOH, I kept iOS 6.1.3 on my iPad 3, partly because I just prefer the look on the larger screen. What looks out of scale on an iPhone actually looks properly proportioned on an iPad. iOS 7/8 uses a lot more white space -- while it looks appropriate on an iPhone, there's too much unused space on an iPad.

I want the OS that has the latest security, the newest features, the smallest resource footprint, etc. That means I want iOS 8 as of today.

Are there tiny things I miss about previous versions of iOS? Sure. Does that mean I'm willing to quarantine my devices from being updated? No way.

You can try to prolong the past, but eventually you'll be forced to move forward, unless you just want a calculator with a bunch of other apps that no longer work.

Anyone think they will restore the (classic) iOS 6 look? Using iOS 7 and 8 after so long is really making me miss it. I really hope they loose the flat look by iOS 9 or 10 and go back to what made the platform so awesome to use... the look. :D

I hope Apple never goes back. I hated the look of iOS 6. iOS 4 and previous was better. I feel iOS 8 is more consistent for what it features as an OS.

Buy an iPhone 3GS and enjoy your outdated OS

Smallest resource footprint is iOS 8? Huh?

I think you have it backwards. I believe each iOS update creates new features, background processes, and API's that tax the system even more and cause previous hardware to lag (see iPhone 4s on iOS 8).

Well, ever since iOS 7 you can simply download the last version of the app that ran on your iOS device.

Say I want to keep my device on iOS 7 while an app gets updated in the future to require iOS 11... I can still download the old iOS 7 version that works perfectly on my phone.

Any idea eyongren why Apple doesn't allow people who are out of warranty to downgrade their OS besides being stubborn?

I mean you used to be able to (if you had the IPSW file) until Apple implemented the system where they need to still be signing it.

I think HTC has a program that allows you to unlock your bootloader on your Android device as long as you void your warranty.

I mean it's not like most customers even know what an IPSW file is, so it would simply help those die-hard techie customers that want the old experience.

They say they disallow downgrades for security reasons

Don't come at me with pesky facts! I'm trying to make a snarky point!

Fair enough for a company to say.

It just seems that if you can downgrade your Macbook OSX version (even if it is less secure) then there isn't much of a reason Apple has to intentionally block people from going on less secure iOS versions of the past.

Hell, Apple just recently instructed users to downgrade their iOS version for a few days when their 'more secure' iOS 8.0.1 broke some functionality. Why not let customers downgrade their more secure iOS versions that aren't under warranty anymore because the new update 'broke' the look or performance of their device?

Just seems really childish, heavy handed, or greedy of Apple to me :(

Dammit you're right mcdj! I'll just do what I should have before ;)

OP: iOS 6 is the best looking mobile OS. That's a FACT. iOS 7 looks like something a child designed. I'm serious. I use it on my iPad 3 and love it. I wish the 5S had shipped with it. I will use 6 for as long as my iPad turns on.

How is it "FACT"? That is purely your opinion, and I know many people who would disagree with you. Everyone has their own opinion, but I believe more people like the look of iOS 7+ than iOS 6 now, and wouldnt change it back even if they had the chance.

Only thing I really missed is the ability to post on Facebook/Tweets in iOS via notification

Pretty much. It's a shame they got rid of that. There's an app, "TapToShare" that brings back that functionality, but it's not as good as it being baked into the OS.

Also, the people who are still hinging and living by iOS 6 need to get with the times or stay on the 4S where it works better.

At one time, the OS was superior in function and had less glitches, but by now, you'd be hard-pressed to find it work in conjunction with new app updates and the newer processors and hardware. Not to mention that the look is antiquated at this point, and aside from that, why would you run a two year old mobile OS on new phones? It's basically the same with a modern look that works much better.

Because he doesn't want anybody to disagree with him, and you can't disagree with facts.

To be fair, I don't dislike the look of iOS 6. I still think it's a timeless Apple design- a new design doesn't instantly make the old design substandard. That said, iOS 7 and above is equally iconic in my eyes, and it would be in people's best interest to try and get used to the look if they plan on staying with Apple in the coming years. Even if you somehow manage to ride your old devices until they die, you will have long since been left behind by the rest of the ecosystem.

The only thing I wish is that they separate the status bar and the top toolbar and not make it part of it. Even a horizontal line would suffice.
