All i want to know is when Apple is going to ditch LTE and go back to 2G service, I hate all this new/faster stuff. I just want to live in 2007 forever

So then, why is my opinion on it any less valid? Simply because it doesn't gel with your opinion? My opinion is that I don't care to go back to the iOS 6 look, nor do I care to downgrade my devices to the previous OS.

Yours is a very valid opinion that I can appreciate, and shared by many, just that I didn't appreciate the first response you made with the snarky sarcasm is all so I responded in kind with my own opinion and sarcasm.

Visual layout of an OS =/= decreased hardware capabilities.

No snark at all. Just seemed like a huge leap from not allowing downgrades after a certain time, to Apple being "pricks".
But whatever, agree to disagree.

No worries, I know I can get hot headed at times (especially about this issue) and say opinions not shared by all. I appreciate your responses though without anything escalating. Wish all posters on the forum could be as satisfying debate with as you mercuryjones :)

Cheers!

Any idea eyongren why Apple doesn't allow people who are out of warranty to downgrade their OS besides being stubborn?

Several reasons. First by forcing the upgrades on all customers devices they can the greatly reduce the fragmentation issues that plague Android. Second by forcing the upgrade and not allowing the rollback it allows Apple to cut support for the older OS sooner. Think about the resources Microsoft had to put into supporting XP for over the last 15 years. Even though Apple has plenty of money they have alway had a hard time coming up with enough engineering talent to work on all the projects they have going.

"Many" != >50%

Not that Apple would care, really. Apple is first and foremost a design company, and like it or not, they do know what works, and what doesn't.

iOS6 UI was nice. I'm not arguing that it wasn't. But I sincerely doubt it will be something we will see again.

That's not true but that's what they want you to think. And many of their lower level employees have drunk from that punch bowl as well. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying design is not important to them as it's a differentiator. But if you think they're first & foremost a design company I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Amongst other things, the unified appearance of apps makes it so they don't look out of place in the sharing sheet of an app.

I for one am utterly digging the new look and have no desire to regress back to ios6.

Anyone think they will restore the (classic) iOS 6 look? Using iOS 7 and 8 after so long is really making me miss it. I really hope they loose the flat look by iOS 9 or 10 and go back to what made the platform so awesome to use... the look. :D

Just because of you. Never.

I'm still on ios 5.1 (iphone 4) because of how ugly they've made things since ios 7.
I don't get people who say it was boring. All I know is the thicker fonts and shadows add contrasting tones, making everything read more clearly. And all that excessive use of white is hard on the eyes. And why use all those neon colors as background/accents? Colors that bright next to that much white isn't refreshing, it looks hideous.

Not looking forward to being forced to use ios 8 in when my 6 ships. My only hope is that when a jailbreak hits I'll be able to make it more bearable.

I'll be glad when this trend of anorexic fonts circles back to bolder ones. Get that new Pepsi logo off my lawn.
A couple of jailbreak tweaks that'll help.

Eclipse. System-wide black. Or red, or blue, or whatever color you want to set it at. Affects ALL apps except Cydia. You can whitelist an app though if Eclipse makes that add hard to read.

Color Profiles. Will change everything to the color and warmth you select. This is different from Eclipse in that it can affect the color inside apps beyond icons and background. For instance, Eclipse will make things black, but you still see color icons and such. A Color Profile of Grayscale will turn everything grayscale.

Monochrome. Grayscale icons. Only affect icons on the springboard, so you can still have color everywhere else.

These three things have helped to keep me sane on 7.1.2 and have gone some ways to forcing peace between me and iOS.

I'd imagine iOS 10 would be when a new revamp happens. I'm guessing it'll be a bridge between the really minimalist/white design we have now, and the glossy design of the past we used to have. Somewhere in the middle is what they should aim for.

This is actually a pretty cool idea #
This is one of the major reasons people jailbreak. Cool idea. Already done. Been doing it since I came in at iOS 5 and it was being done way before that.

----------

go to android if you want inconsistent/crap design.
Hmm…I know you directed this at someone else, but my question is why?

I can just jailbreak my iPhone. Oh, oops! I already have! :D

My point was, I showed an example of them allowing it on another of their products (MacBooks) so it doesn't make sense for them to intentionally block iOS users from doing so.

So yes, it's a conscious decision by a company to limit users ability to control their iOS devices and (in my opinion) makes them pricks. Seems perfectly valid for me to have an opinion.

Your "point" sucks and you're clearly bitter.

You can easily make the argument (and I will) that it's better for the majority of users to be on the same OS. and while I agree that 6 was the fastest and most bug free ios that I've used, 8 is close and wayyyy more functional. iOS 6 was released in 2012 dude. Get over it.

I hate this guy because he posts all the time about Sprint :)P) but he's taking action and making his UI what he wants it to be instead of whining about apple not going back to an old OS.

Bwahahahahaha! ROTFLMAO!!!!

Yeah, there's no point in whining about it. It is what it is. I'm definitely NOT happy about it (and in truth, I have bitched about my iOS 7 hate) but what can you do. I can't roll back so I have to live with this fruitcake abomination.

Jailbreaking has made it much easier to swallow though. I hate fruitcake! :D

I get that but not everybody jailbreaks or roots their phone. It would be cool to see that feature already baked into iOS.

I see. Unfortunately, I don't think that will ever happen. Apple wants to control the look of iOS and allowing everyone to change it willy-nilly isn't Apple controlling the image.

I can see where they might possibly allow some minor things. Like changing the colors you see in iOS 7/8 on a light colored iPhone to those you'd see on a dark colored iPhone. Maybe something like that. But wholesale, theming. No.

I don't like attempted sarcasm.

Uhm - but you do like living in the past?

*[clears throat]. In MY day, we had an OS that looked like something. Not this new fandangled flat nonsense. It was so skeuphomorfistically rich, you could literally *smell* the green playing-deck felt... An OS where notepads looked like notepads, with a beautiful yellow lustre, that made you want to write on your screen with a ballpoint pen... Leather that looked so real, you wanted to wear it...*

Said no-one. Ever.

IOS 6 is hideous. Cannot actually believe it was cutting edge at some point.

Move on. Let it go. The Eighties were kind of cool - but who'd want them back (Don Johnson aside)?

It's almost as ridiculous a design-concept, as all those who speak for the "many" who want to return to the past.

So, to throw back some of your 'logic': IOS 6 was the most hideous OS ever. FACT. I hope they NEVER bring it back!

Well, I'm a product of the 80s. I was 10 in 1980. And I very much want them back, which is why it's so cool seeing all these 1980s movies being remade and fashion coming back and so on.

My wife hates it, but I love it.

I also like iOS 6 and for as much hate as you have for it, I hate iOS 7 more.

But that's just my opinion(s).

Exacerly. Beauty in the eye of the beholder blah blah blah, one person's wonderful IOS/another's worst-ever - which is why I wade in with the sarcasm flowing... How in the name of all that is holy, can the OP honestly be sitting there "wondering" if Apple will turn back the clock?

It's so beyond ridiculous, that I cannot even begin to understand why one would start a thread premised *entirely* on HIS/HER OPINION of an IOS.

Does he honestly think Tim Cook/Ive et al are going to come out saying *mea culpa mea culpa, everything is wrong, we've made a massive design flaw, and absolutely everything will revert back to where it was?

Really? Unicorn tears. That's what they'll be serving in the foyer of *that* announcement...

I say a 20 years or so, whenever the current gets considered "antiquated" and "outdated". Because you know, after if you dont change your appearance every few years, people tend to hate you for it.

It's so beyond ridiculous, that I cannot even begin to understand why one would start a thread premised *entirely* on HIS/HER OPINION of an IOS.
Probably for the same reason that in the first two weeks after launch of the iPhone 6/6+ we had a million and one threads about how great those phones are.

Users on MR will always make threads based on their opinion of a product – particularly when they feel very strongly about it, one way or the other. Whether that's based on fact or not though is debatable. I don't see that changing here any time soon.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying design is not important to them as it's a differentiator. But if you think they're first & foremost a design company I have a bridge I'd like to sell you.

Lets have a look at that bridge then.

When I say Apple are a design company, I not only mean the UI. The design is in the entirety, hardware, software, UI, and ulltimately UX.

It's what Apple do, it's what they excel at. Yes, they are very much a company who strive for higher earnings each year, but most companies do. Hell, it wouldn't make sense if they didn't.

So I stand by what I say. Apple are first and foremost a design company. But it's design in its entirety.
