White iPhone 4 DELAYED. Officially

Getting My Black 32 This Weekend

Found an Apple Store near me with a short queue this morning. Since I buy a new iPhone every year, I can't wait any longer for White. Promised mine by Sunday. So I feel very lucky given I had my heart set on White since I saw it at WWDC and online orders still have a 3 week lead time. :eek:

I wanted the white but went and got the black on the release date anyway.... This is my first black iPhone.. Owned a 3G and a 3GS in white.... Something told me to just go and get the black! Now I'm happy with the black 4.... Sucks for the people that were actually waiting though!

That's basically what they're trying to do, block any illumination from the LED backlight to seep through to the outside, or worse, to let ambient light in the environment affect the display performance of the handset. Apple doesn't have the option of caking on the paint like you do on your living room wall.

My problem with this theory is that what you've described would have been solved during the initial testing phase. Obviously the prototypes that were field tested, and the review models sent to a select few, didn't exhibit this issue. That along with the fact that the white model was supposed to be available at the same time as the black one for the initial launch, point towards an unexpected variable causing the delay, as opposed to a design/engineering problem. So unless they made some last minute changes to the paint or manufacturing process being used, the problem shouldn't be specific for the white model.

However, I vaguely remember reading that due to heavy demands and supply constraints, the white models were being built at a different facility and/or by a different supplier. If anything changed (such as paint from a different manufacturer or different equipment being used at the new location) when sourced to the other company, I can see how a deviation could produce unpredictable problems.

But even with that explanation, I find it hard to believe that an initial batch of white iP4's weren't available, especially for the pre-order crowd. Something just doesn't add up, but I guess at this point it doesn't really matter. Whatever the true reason for the delay is, and whether or not we find out the cause....people who have their heart set on the white version will just have to wait.
 
Actually, I was a bit concerned that the screen on the white phone would not be as vibrant as if it were black. Jewelers put their gems on black velvet because it makes them look better. So, the screen on the black iPhone really does "pop" more than the white one. I was really wondering how much trouble it would be to make the back white and leave the front black, so I would get a black one...

But now, just let go of the idea of a white phone and I think that is the best decision. The white one had its charm, but not enough to wait until whenever.

Yeah, I just can't wait any longer. Sure, later this year could mean in a couple of weeks, but realistically I'm thinking more like September/October, and two more months without any phone isn't an option for me. I probably shouldn't have sold my old one, but oh well. Hindsight is always 20/20.
 
something tells me we might not see the white iPhone 4 this year, in fact I wonder if they will get it fixed by Christmas or if they are planning on fixing all the phones before they release the white ones :rolleyes:

Point taken, my mistake. Although paint on glass is still a terrible idea and Apple must notice this as they still can't produce it.
 
To me, the real problem with waiting any longer is that when the iPhone 5 (or 4GS-3000 or whatever) comes out next june I won't be eligible for the upgrade for a month or two after THAT because I waited for the damn white one THIS time -- actually I'm already feeling like I waited too long this time! I may just have to suck it up and skip the iPhone 4 all together... argh!

I'm not specifically talking about the iPhone. What i mean is in general, early adopters aren't the brightest of the population. And i agree, the iPhone 4 is great.

Everyone still tormenting themselves about waiting should just order a black and be happy. When they delayed it the second time at the conference, I told myself that if it got delayed again, I'd forget about it. It's just a color. There's always next year for a white iPhone. Signed up for a black at the Apple Store and couldn't be happier. Can't wait to own that beautiful display!

I'm not being a hater, I'm really not, but the white iPhone is hereby dead to me and I feel so bad seeing everyone in here still wondering when it's coming out, if they should get black, etc. Just go for it!

I waited after pre-order day because I thought it would be out for pre-order the next week. I waited after launch day because I figured I wouldn't be able to get a black if I ordered it until mid July anyhow. Color was a factor, but unless you have amnesia, you should remember that up until this morning, everyone thought white was coming out before black would be shipped to them. (End of July vs. 3 weeks.)

PS - LOLZ at you - it should read "YOU'RE missing important things" and "its color."

My theory...

They have a bunch of the black models currently available and need to get rid of them. They have a fix for the antenna issue that will be coming later in the year and don't want to create the white iphones until they have that figured out first. Why create two seperate models with the antenna issue and waste that money? They'll figure it out and then release it later in the year.

What did they get in all honesty? All that's happening now is that they have to wait longer than they expected. Either way they got to try out the iPhone and get used to all it's features within the 30 day span. Now it's up to them as to whether or not they want to wait longer, or take the plunge and get a black one.

I, in all honesty, am just glad that Apple has announced it to be "sometime later this year" rather than to keep pushing the date back from Mid-July to the End of July. I planned on getting black anyway. But people have to do whatever people have to do to make themselves happy.

How old are you? 6? Maybe 10 cause I applaud your spelling for being so immature. I can't believe you are really making fun of people for being patient for something. Honestly... what the hell is wrong with you?

Now I am really confused and frustrated. I saw a girl talking on a white iPhone 4 at the mall yesterday (our only mall in Indiana that has an applestore). I didn't believe it when my sister pointed it out but I actually doubled back to walk past her again to confirm it. It had the silver outline and I could clearly see the apple and product info on the back of the phone. I knew I should have interrupted her call to ask how she got it. Or at least I should have tried to stealthily taken a picture. Maybe she had a white case that had the writing on the back but it looked like the pics from the june reveal.

With this announcement I have to decide if I want to buy the phone in January or just wait for the next update in summer '11.

The conspiracy theorists will LOVE this post. "Maybe it's like, you have to ask them and then recite the secret word for white! OMG what do you think the secret word is? I'm going to go to my local Apple Store and try it!"

She probably went to whiteiphone4now.com. Apple's not selling them now, or most likely ever.
 
I guess I'll be waiting for it till the September 30th date. I spoke with a friend of mine from AT&T and there's a strong rumor that they could have a second revision by that date.

I know, I don't really believe it either, but hopefully that's when the white one will come out.
 
I quit buying iPhones on launch day after the 1st gen. I went through four of those suckers.

Now, I always wait a little while. I waited 2 months before I got the 3G, come to think of it.

I'm giving up on whitey this round. I'm gonna go black. ;)

I know.... I feel like I am going crazy and my eyes were playing tricks on me because I have been patiently waiting for the white iphones and I am not good at waiting. My only saving grace is that I didn't see the white on the face of the phone so I am telling myself that it must have been a case.
