Didn't get the black yet because we were waiting for the white to get a matching pair for my wife. Now maybe I can get mine. :) At this point, it does make sense for anyone who wants white to wait for the 5 or buy black.

Damn....

People have been holding out to get this white iPhone, some even having returned their black ones now won't get an iPhone till like christmas, and even then they might only be very limited, so will have to wait longer. Unless by then black iPhones are easier to get.

I wanted white, but meh doesn't matter if its black or white. Still an iPhone :) I took the chance to get an iPhone when I had it and have been enjoying it for a month, tomorrow, already :)

Enjoy the wait : /

Not impossible

I'm wondering the same thing. how'd it go from weeks of a delay to suddently end of the year (possible 5 months)? that sounds like they don't have hope of it being possible to manufacturer.

Matching color is very difficult. Apple sounds like they are using a spectrophotometers to see how white the white actually is, there are so many different shades of white. Even though the color might appear white it could a different shade.

It is very hard to control the exact color each time. They make a batch, test it out, if its off they have to start all over again.

Yeah, it sucks.

I wonder if it has to to do with discoloration due to the heat of the phone.... Wouldn't want that phone to start turning yellow after a while.

Hopefully the White becomes available before Christmas. This delay of the white iP4 has already started to eat away at the 12 months cycle until the iP5.:(

Perspective, people, perspective. Waking up to the news that someone close to you has died, that would be an awful thing. Get a grip, please!

This. Whilst this may be a bit of a PR issue for Apple with them only having recently announced (for a second time) the release date for the white version, it is far from being 'an awful thing to wake up to'.

I think Apple are just interested in shipping a decent quality product, which obviously the manufacturer's haven't been able to achieve yet, probably despite telling Apple they could have them ready in time. Who can blame Apple for pushing the release back? They don't really need any more bad PR over dodgy quality produce given what they've had to endure the past 3 weeks. If you're that desperate for an iPhone, go and buy a black one. It wasn't that long ago that these forums and the press were sick with all iPods/MacBooks being white and wanting black versions of everything!

Last week everything was OK, and this week there is a delay till later this year? I'm disappointed in Apple. If they had just been honest from the start it would have been ok.

I love this line from the Press Release:

The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

Is it not obvious that the black models would be more popular since those are the only ones being sold?

i can see this stinks for some people.

to me:
black = sleeker
white = cheaper

the end of the world as some see it here....no, not at all.

Back to Black

Well, looks like I'll be buying a black one today. I can't believe all the people that are just so pissed about this. Yea, I've held off for a white one for a little white, but there are bigger problems in the world then getting pissed about what color your phone is going to be. Take a yoga class or something and relax.

Well, off to buy a black one.

No redesign...Apple just trying to avoid another botched release.

For all the folks that think Apple must be redesigning the antenna for the white one, consider this: If they do that without a recall on the black one they would open themselves up to massive litigation. They will not change the antenna design until iPhone5. While that sucks for many of us - I refuse to get a case so I will be getting a Droid X - as Steve Jobs pointed out most of the users (which has been over 70% existing iPhone customers) don't seem to mind. They will continue to sell the iPhone4 with its current design until next spring. If anything I predict they will release a new phone earlier than June - but that is just a guess.

As to the trouble wit the white glass. Keep in mind that white is one of the most difficult colors to manufacture so that the color remains stable. White paint and plastic have a tendency to turn yellow with exposure to sunlight. I suspect that they are having an issue developing a process where the white color/paint that is on the underside of the glass remains stable in long term testing. The last thing they want is a batch of iPhone4's out there that are turning yellow. As someone said, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Personally I think it is the right call. At this point - Apple needs to do everything they can do to avoid litigation and further quality issues. If that means delaying the white iPhone4 until it is right...then that is what they need to do.

This has been a bad 11 months for Apple with the horrible 27" iMac disaster and then the iPhone4 disaster. Those two products represent the majority of their revenue year over year. Had it not been for the truly magical (and extremely high quality) iPad - 2010 would be a bust for Apple.

I have a MacBook Pro and will be getting an iMac here in the next week or so as soon as the refresh is announced. An iPhone will have to wait until they work the bugs out - hopefully late next spring or early summer with the iPhone5. Until then they are doing the right thing by keeping a close eye on quality.

Oh, damn you, Apple!!

I have no idea what to do. Get a black iPhone, or wait it out (for how long?) and get a white iPhone? =(

Or get a black one and when the white one comes out, buy spare parts for the chassis pieces and turn it white myself, voiding the warranty =(

I can only hope that when it comes out, it will have a better antenna and proximity sensor!!

haha..good on you apple...the end of july.....pmsl..2011!!!!

what a complete and utter cock up the iphone4 launch has been...

definitely huh. selling over 2 million units in 3 countries shows how bad it's been for them. but i know what you mean. the issues that have been having. they still sold a crap load though.

are you kidding? This is the first time we've seen apple slightly mess up in the past 5 years.

As an imac, Mac Pro and Macbook Pro x 2 owner I can assure you this is not the case.

In terms of the iOS devices, you might be right in the sense that the fail is not their error on the hardware, but in the really really really bad way they handled the issue PR wise.

If color is the issue I can totally understand the delay.
The company I work for has anodized frames imported from china. I think they do their quality assurance in an unlighted part of the factory and the inspectors are wearing sun glasses

The proximity sensor is a software issue, not hardware.

Go get a black iPhone. Enjoy the device. The experience is what matters, not what color it is. You'll enjoy the iPhone regardless of color.

What they're not telling us is that this delay was planned because... wait for it...

White iPhone 4 will be officially released on Verizon. :D

Two things:
  1. For the easily confused, the comment concerning popularity is about the two colours and their PAST performance. It isn't that the black iPhone 4 is more popular than the white iPhone 4 but that black iPhones in general has been more popular than white iPhones.
  2. For those calling Apple and Steve Jobs liars, Steve Jobs is a CEO and there is no evidence Apple lied. Let me reiterate: Steve jobs is the CEO of Apple. He's not an engineer and he almost certainly was just repeating the time estimate he was given. He did not lie, he simply repeated a bad estimate. Likewise, Apple did not lie to you or anyone else. A bad estimate is not a lie, it's a bad estimate.

So the manufacturing process turned out to be more difficult than they expected, so what? It's a relatively new process and the colour has turned out to be tricky. Really, the colour. Who really expected Apple to foresee that the colour of the front panel would produce this much trouble?

It strikes me that there is always a lemming effect with the new iPhone right? Its not just that they sold that many, but that they sold that many so fast. Almost all of them were before all the issues came out.

It will be interesting to see how the future launches go--will the blind trust still be there or will hesitancy born from this incident cause more people to hold back?

My money is on the lemmings.

CNBC news with Mark H and Erin B just announced it, and asked if someone could email them on why it is so difficult to paint the plastic.

What difference does it make if he was lying or just wrong? Either way its a gaffe.
