It strikes me that there is always a lemming effect with the new iPhone right? Its not just that they sold that many, but that they sold that many so fast. Almost all of them were before all the issues came out.

It will be interesting to see how the future launches go--will the blind trust still be there or will hesitancy born from this incident cause more people to hold back?

My money is on the lemmings.

Based on the minimal amount of returns as a result of the drama from this release, I'd say iPhone 5 won't be any less appealing at all!

Two things:
  1. For the easily confused, the comment concerning popularity is about the two colours and their PAST performance. It isn't that the black iPhone 4 is more popular than the white iPhone 4 but that black iPhones in general has been more popular than white iPhones.
  2. For those calling Apple and Steve Jobs liars, Steve Jobs is a CEO and there is no evidence Apple lied. Let me reiterate: Steve jobs is the CEO of Apple. He's not an engineer and he almost certainly was just repeating the time estimate he was given. He did not lie, he simply repeated a bad estimate. Likewise, Apple did not lie to you or anyone else. A bad estimate is not a lie, it's a bad estimate.

So the manufacturing process turned out to be more difficult than they expected, so what? It's a relatively new process and the colour has turned out to be tricky. Really, the colour. Who really expected Apple to foresee that the colour of the front panel would produce this much trouble?

But but... Apple knows ALL! You're hurting my brain... CONFUSION!!!!:confused::confused:

Are YOU kidding?! Really? The first time? In FIVE years? Wow.

I am hoping he was intending to say that this is the first time that they have so fully failed to manage a slight issue and thus have had it blow up in their collective face.

I've been desperately questing for reasons not to spend £600 on a new phone. Luckily, this year Apple have handed me a laundry list of reasons not to! I'll carry on with my crack-tastic white 3GS until i can get a white 64 gig iPhone that can hold a signal. :)

Perhaps they decided to alter the manufacturing process for the white version so as to fix the reception issue :p

You're suggesting they release a superior white model? As long as they don't try and market it like Sony did with the white PSP! ... I jest!

You can't make a statement like that without having the presence of mind to read the minutes from their earnings call, surely?

They can't keep up with demand currently, and could really do without the negative PR, given the messy launch thus far. Additionally, further negative PR stems from Apple's recent announcement that it would be available at month end. The second and third parts of that sentence didn't actually require reading the earnings call, come to think of it - a little common sense wouldn't go amiss, though!

I didn't read the earning calls because everyone knows they're selling out and had a very lucrative quarter. So why delay the white iphone, because demand exceeds capacity. Don't even need to change the toner on the case machine because these things already have a buyer once they roll off the line.

When everyone has one in 3 months times, then they bring out the new WHITE iphone pandemonium all over again. Diehards will have to have it. Makes no logical sense, but then again we aren't all logical beings.

If :apple: decided to bring out a special edition with Steve Jobs signature on the back, you can bet they will be lining up in 6 months time :D

For all the folks that think Apple must be redesigning the antenna for the white one, consider this: If they do that without a recall on the black one they would open themselves up to massive litigation. They will not change the antenna design until iPhone5. While that sucks for many of us - I refuse to get a case so I will be getting a Droid X - as Steve Jobs pointed out most of the users (which has been over 70% existing iPhone customers) don't seem to mind. They will continue to sell the iPhone4 with its current design until next spring. If anything I predict they will release a new phone earlier than June - but that is just a guess.

As to the trouble wit the white glass. Keep in mind that white is one of the most difficult colors to manufacture so that the color remains stable. White paint and plastic have a tendency to turn yellow with exposure to sunlight. I suspect that they are having an issue developing a process where the white color/paint that is on the underside of the glass remains stable in long term testing. The last thing they want is a batch of iPhone4's out there that are turning yellow. As someone said, they are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Personally I think it is the right call. At this point - Apple needs to do everything they can do to avoid litigation and further quality issues. If that means delaying the white iPhone4 until it is right...then that is what they need to do.

This has been a bad 11 months for Apple with the horrible 27" iMac disaster and then the iPhone4 disaster. Those two products represent the majority of their revenue year over year. Had it not been for the truly magical (and extremely high quality) iPad - 2010 would be a bust for Apple.

I have a MacBook Pro and will be getting an iMac here in the next week or so as soon as the refresh is announced. An iPhone will have to wait until they work the bugs out - hopefully late next spring or early summer with the iPhone5. Until then they are doing the right thing by keeping a close eye on quality.

Who's to say they don't improve the internals of the phone without changing the outside appearance to make the antenna issues go away?
It is not a glass issue because that issue would also be a problem for black iPhones as well.
Fixing an antenna on a phone is a minor fix compared to other redesigns and can be easily planned and underway in weeks

The iPhone 4 is cursed. I mean, WTF? The biggest/greatest/mostMagical phone ever is turning into liability after liability for Apple. What a headache.

I give up

That settles it I'm getting a black.

Me too. After waiting since pre-order day and going back and forth for 2 weeks, obsessing over a release date and seeing Tuesday and Thursday mornings come and go with no update I decided to pull the trigger last night.

I figure I can sell the black one later this fall or winter or next spring or whenever the white one actually comes out.

I am disappointed but more than that, I am mad that Steve blatantly lied about shipping the white version last week at the press conference. You can't tell me that these manufacturing problems became that much worse this week that they could not make the date they claimed they would. I hope Steve gets called out on this but after this weeks earnings report it's not like it will make a bit of difference.

At least I finally have my iPhone 4 on backorder.

Are YOU kidding?! Really? The first time? In FIVE years? Wow.

I mean, we have very high expectations for Apple already so it's unfair on a consumer's part to be frustrated at a company that's already revolutionized every day computing. The world is struggling to keep up with Apple's innovations and it's safe to say that they now claim an industry standard. But when they're doing stuff thats waayyy past that standard, they're going to come across some minor setbacks

Steve and Jonny Ive are out of control. I'm all for innovation, but jeepers make sue it freaking works first!!

Function First!!!!!! I'll be ready for my White iPhone 5 next July.

Last week everything was OK, and this week there is a delay till later this year? I'm disappointed in Apple. If they had just been honest from the start it would have been ok.

Apple is developing a pattern of being dishonest which is unfortunate. They were dishonest about the 27" iMac, about the iPhone4 antenna issue and now the manufacturing timeline for the white iPhone4.

I fully believe they knew this last week but didn't lump it into the PR spin machine because they didn't want to draw any more bad press.

This is annoying. I wish that Apple could've just told us this from the get go... Do you know how frustrating it is not being able to fit my library on my phone? And to have a phone that runs freakishly slow in comparison to the 3GS and the 4?

Yeah, I know it's not my biggest worries and that there are a lot more important things in my life, but I have been carried along on a string since mid-June thinking I was going to have this thing in my hands by early August. This is a major blunder on both Apple's and Steve Jobs' behalf.

I agree, I don't think he lied. But with the way this has been going for Apple the last few weeks how do you think this is gonna play out? He just said last week in a very publicized press conference that it would be available by the end of July. Not a lie, but IMHO just as bad because people are starting to wonder what the hell is going on at Apple.

White

Couldn't they have just released the whites as they had them, and if people complained at the color, just told them "you're looking at it wrong"?

:D

haha..good on you apple...the end of july.....pmsl..2011!!!!

what a complete and utter cock up the iphone4 launch has been...

You can't have it both ways. First you complain that the black iPhone 4 has antenna issues and was released too soon before it was adequately tested. Now you are complaining that the white iPhone 4 will not be released because Apple want it perfect before releasing it.

Are you trolling or just whining ????

It was most likely some engineer or maybe foxconn that gave him the estimate. Sure it's fun the blame the figurehead, but realize that he gets his data from somewhere. Maybe he was lying, but it's more likely that the dates he had were just way off... Knowing steve, he's probably pacing in his office and talking up a storm in frustration about being made a fool of.

No way he would lie if he knew it wasn't gonna be released at the end of July! More bad press is the last thing he would want.

You don't understand...if they fix a major problem like the antenna issue and do not offer a recall to the millions that bought during the first six months of production they will open themselves up to class action law suits because they will have admitted the design flaw.

They won't do that - I guarantee it. The Antenna will be addressed with the next generation - which will be touted as the most researched/tested antenna ever designed. The next iP5 will probably also be the first iPhone that will be available on multiple carriers at launch and will finally offer features like a larger screen and wifi hot spot.

As to the other issue...it isn't a glass issue. I am pretty sure it is getting the white color to remain stable in this new manufacturing process. White is very prone to yellowing. If they don't get the white perfect, it will yellow and that would look terrible under the shiny glass.

I am glad that they are taking the time to get things right, but that I'm just upset Apple waited this long to tell people. I would have preordered if I had known this.

No way he would lie if he knew it wasn't gonna be released at the end of July! More bad press is the last thing he would want.

They're gonna get bad press either way. They just said a week ago it would be available. I'm sure the reason is valid but it looks bad either way
