I suggest you watch this little bit of Louis CK on Conan: Everything's Amazing, Nobody's Happy
I've seen that interview before. I completely agree with his opinion, but the fact of the matter is that Apple promised a product to the public, and didn't deliver. Not to say that it's the end of the world, but this whole thing is worthy of some amount of drama. To those who were waiting on the white iPhone, and held off on buying the black at launch, I say go ahead and be as pissed as you want. I think you have the right.

The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected.

Surely the black one is more popular because no-one can actually purchase the white one?!

What difference does it make if he was lying or just wrong? Either way its a gaffe.

lie 2 |lʌɪ|
noun
an intentionally false statement : Mungo felt a pang of shame at telling Alice a lie | the whole thing is a pack of lies.

mistake |mɪˈsteɪk|
noun
an action or judgment that is misguided or wrong : coming here was a mistake | she made the mistake of thinking they were important.

gaffe |gaf|
noun
an unintentional act or remark causing embarrassment to its originator; a blunder : an unforgivable social gaffe.

New Oxford American Dictionary

There are some rather important differences between and among those words. To accuse someone of lying implies a type of mens rea that is wholly absent in the case of a simple mistake (be it of judgement or fact).

This makes me wonder how Walt Mossberg got a white iPhone before release date - months ago.

That's an excellent point that also bolsters the idea that they are testing new antenna internals.

Maybe they do have some other production problems with the white iPhone, but something more is amiss here.

I wonder how long it is before someone in the main stream media coins the term "Antenna Gate"? LOL

Letterman and Leno have certainly been hammering Apple lately.
Not good news for Apple. :(

Are you kidding me?!?

Agh... I could have had a black on launch day. I could have had a black two weeks later. I could have had a black a week ago... I waited because I thought this thing would become available... f&%@ this...

I feel your pain, brother.

Other companies miss estimates and release dates all the time. There's no conspiracy here. Unforeseen manufacturing problems happen all the time. Apple just brings the whining out more than most.

Making a relatively small batch of white phones is completely different than making a consistent batch of millions.

Trying times for Apple.

You would have thought Apple would have known manufacturering issues? They would have to have built some post-sale models.

This changes everything....again !

They should bring one out in a nice shade of Peach Pastiche !

i bet they turn yellow like the old white imacs did.

i bet they found out that the white ones cause even worse reception for some weird reason. maybe the white coloring is provided by titanium, and it causes higher interference, or something.

lame.

I wasn't implying that it was planned by Apple. It may have been, it may not have been. What I'm saying is that if I had been specifically waiting for the white model, I would be fairly upset too. And yes, Apple's followers are obviously more vocal about issues like this, because of what Apple is, but I think that if this happened to any other company, those customers would have just as much right to be upset as well.

Might be related to this too

This probably explains the report that Apple was prepping their stores for a large influx of customers this weekend: the white-iphone-holdouts who will say "screw it" and not bother waiting for white anymore, and just go ahead and buy a black one...

This may also play into the story on BGR last night that says:

One of our Apple sources has been communicating some internal Apple information to us, and from what we’ve been told, this weekend could be big. Currently, if you go to an Apple retail store and can’t find an iPad or iPhone 4, Apple will offer the ability to reserve one for you. These are “Priority Lists” and contain your name and information in addition to the specific device and configuration you want. These lists allow Apple to determine how to manage their channel inventory or possibly ramp up on production. Here’s the big news we’ve been told… Apple is apparently incredibly interested in clearing out these waiting lists, and if our tipster is correct, they’re aiming to do it by this weekend. We have been told that stores have lists that could be anywhere from 500 to 1500 or more customers waiting for iPhones, and anywhere from 250 to 750 customers waiting for iPads. Apparently all Apple stores have asked employees for an “all hands on deck” approach this weekend, somewhat similar to that of Apple product launch days. We have even been informed that Apple stores might open early on Sunday to accommodate extra traffic. Lastly, our source let us know that clearing out these lists could result in the sale of up to an additional 500,000 to 1,000,000 iOS devices in just a few short days.
