Interesting, so I guess they can't just paint it white, and then paint it black on the inside because that would be too thick, or it would make the white look grey?

Whats interesting to me is why Apple is actually saying what the hold up is related too. Makes me think these wild ideas of adding clear coating may be true (which I laughed at the first time it was suggested). Why would they not come out and say "Dont, worry its not us, its A, B or C". Instead it's silent night as usual.

So glad I preferred black. SO, SO glad :)

Light leakage a hardware bug? Hell, I would call that a feature!

Put in some programmable color LEDs, have the iPod player flash the LEDs to the music so it shifts color. That would be a hella fun!

As much as this looks amazing, I'd rather have them fix it completely before coming out. I'm anticipating this phone so much!

Other than being slightly glow-in-the-dark, for a white iPhone, what would be the big deal over a little light leakage anyway ?

Not that I really believe this report, but I don't care about light leakage. I know that many do, so if it is true, I can understand why Apple would delay the phone because of it.

For God's sake no !
Just try to imagine the whiners/haters/bashers' reaction if Apple released a white iphone with a light leakage defect ...

What's the point of buying an iPhone 4? It's obvious now that apple needs to redesign this thing..... again.. Iphone 5 will be here sooner than you think.

so because there's manufacturing problems, he lied?

The tech websites have all but agreed in unison that Apple lied about antenna issues, so, yes. It's possible he's lying about this. Gotta keep that "APPL" up ($). Same guy who wouldn't disclose a liver transplant as not to upset the delicate nature of stock.

this is why they should have used black and white carbon fibre for the backs lol not only would it look cool but makes it lighter too!

"...and the glass construction makes it considerably more difficult to simply fill in the gaps where the light is leaking through than it would for devices with plastic or metal cases..."

Then shouldn't the black ones have the same issue? If it's due to gaps?

Dear apple,

This is a non-issue. My 2008 white MacBook leaks light through plastic, yet you didn't delay the release of that, did you?

Really? I have the '06 version, which falls to pieces.

I couldn't wait anymore for the white version. I just bought the black 32gb iphone4 at the tyson's corner Apple Store today. I cut my old sim card to fit the micro slot and it works. So far I am happy with the iphone 4. I even tried the death grip and no lost bars. The OS on it was already 4.0.1.

Same here. I've wanted a white one since the beginning, but I will wait until Apple works out the issues with them. Whenever that is.

It's funny that they have delayed white iphone because of some light leakage but there were no delays on black one with fundamental antenna design problem.
Gives us some insight how apple prioritizes design & functionality issues.

What I think is some day, whole world's gonna get so frustrated that they'd just give up on being so crazy about it...:(

Yeah, I think I'm done waiting for the white iPhone.

Settle for black now, VS wait for white and screw up the contract end date, which would mean I would always be behind for every release.

Plus the iPhone 4 looks pretty slick in black gloss, unlike the 3G/3GS which looked fugly in black IMO.

Why is Apple getting distracted with such a useless option? No one didn't buy a Model T just because they couldn't get it in white. If you try to please everyone you'll end up pleasing no one. Should someone be so desperate for a white one there is always Colorware.

personally, since it's all made of aluminosilicate glass, I for one wouldn't mind the glass be transparent and you can see all the insides...
maybe frost the apple logo and the other words on it..

Are there any real experts here who could comment on this:

Why not just add a matt black layer as the last coating behind the white paint?

I'd like it if the back had a light glow to it

Ditto, that would be such a cool effect.

Here's a thought Apple. ASK PEOPLE IF THEY MIND THE LIGHT LEAK, those who don't can then have there white iPhone NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From reading through various reports pertaining to the delay. The main one's seem to concentrate on either cohesive or adhesive failure being the problem.

If the white paint is applied to thin the the adhesive shows through but will stick the glass to the phone.

If the white paint is too thick the adhesive won't show through but the paint doesn't have enough internal cohesion to support the stress loads of carrying the the glass, so it falls off.

They seem to be winging that it's getting the paint thickness correct, which is causing the delays.

Adhesive science if a bit of a mine field. And in this one I don't think all of the steps where given sufficient respect. (try walking in to a vehicle paint body shop and suggest they use a silicon based cleaner. I'd say you'll survive about 3 seconds before being launched on to the pavement (sidewalk).

I don't think apple gave full consideration to the type of glass/coating and then to try and paint it????????? NOT GOOD.

Personally I'm not buying any of it, I'd say Apple simply refused to buy a technology package from one of the many specialist coating companies and tried to go it alone, who ever they chose could have pulled a fast one and lied to apple saying it was straight forward and now they've been caught-out.

A technology package like that may have cost $500,000 and a unit price on top. But in the long run it would have worked out a lot cheaper.
