yeah I heard that as well at the store I bought from. However unless AT&T and Apple make me sign something stating other than what their current policy says, in writing, you can.
Blonde Buddhist

Absolutely you can return it. You can return it for a full refund, or if its defective you can exchange it like-for-like (i.e. 16gb for 16gb, black for black). Apple will always do a like-for-like exchange so long as your phone is still under warranty. However, Apple and AT&T do not have to exchange black for white.

Have you ever exchanged an iPhone at Apple before. Many, many of the forum members here will tell you, they do NOT allow color swaps.

Just curious where did you read you could swap colors in either Apple's or AT&T's policy?

While I think the poster whom you replied to could use an English lesson or two, Apple re-nigged on the release date of the white phone.

Not allowing users to see both products at the time of their purchase opens the door for consumers to change their mind. I will check the white phone out, hands on, when it arrives. If that so happens to be within 30 days from yesterday (got my yellow phone replaced), AND it knocks my socks off, I might do the same.

Changing your mind after not being able to have both products on the market when they were initially supposed to be isn't a moral issue. At least not for this buddhist.

Yes, they slipped on the release date. That doesn't give you the right to "lease" a phone. If you wanted to compare the two you should have waited for the White to come out and then go see for yourself.

Just because you couldn't wait doesn't mean that Apple should have to supply you with a temp phone.

Thats not what I am stating.

I am saying exactly what you originally said. If the white comes out in two weeks, I can go return my current phone and then choose to purchase the white phone. That option exists. As I also said, the chances are slim to none, however I could.

So from what you're saying, it's Apple's fault that you was too impatient to wait until they released the white version before making a more informed decision as to which to go for?

They are under no obligation to bring out both products on launch day. If you wasn't sure whether you preferred the black over the white, you should have waited.

Your use of the word however indicated other wise. Look at the two statements (bold text for emphasis):

Apple isn't allowing "exchanges". Employees mentioned "all sales were final" on launch day.

Again, it is possible, but Apple/AT&T will make the process as difficult as possible. You'd have to cancel your contract, return the phone and wait for your upgrade to be reinstated. AT&T may also have road blocks set in place such that you can't sign another contract for sometime. Either way, expect a waiting period between iPhones and a slew of paperwork.

Apple said at the keynote they would both be available on the 24th. The sign said Available the 24th.
They are under no obligation, however neither am I for 30 days. Thats THEIR policy. It allows me the consumer to try the product to my satisfaction. If the white one comes out and meets my satisfaction better than the black, then their policy says go for it.

Again this is all in theory since I am satisfied at the moment.

Whats difficult? Take black iphone into Apple and return it. Walk out. Walk into ATT or Apple down the highway and buy white iphone. Walk out.

Ummm WHY is it that you all wait to get an iPhone 4?? I right now have a 4 in black and sometime between the 13 or 14 am ganja walk right in to AT&T return it, get the 2 year commitment taken off my line and wait about a week if it's that long or so to get my white 32 gig white 4. Soo yeah you all that are waiting could of simple ordered or waited in line, used a black one and the do the same as I. And to all of this who think I'm a Dick for doing this guess what? I don't give 3 ***** because in the very end I get what I want without having to sacrifice 2 months with a graph ass phone. So yeah be smart next year if the same thing happens guys.

iPhone4life

I really hope Apple releases the White iPhone outside of your 30 day window. You deserve it with that kind of ego and sense of entitlement.

Satisfied with the phone? Yes. Color? No. I don't know of anyone, ever, who has had success swapping colors. Let me know how successful you are on White Launch Day.

What happens when your upgrade isn't there waiting for you 20 mins after canceling your contract? What happens when the Apple store says "sorry, you can't sign another contract for 3 months because you just canceled one"? Would that make it hard?

What is it with you man? I have firmly stated that I AM HAPPY WITH MY IPHONE. That the chances are ONE IN FIFTY I WILL RETURN IT.

To answer your question, I would use my add a line :)

I couldn't care less whether you're happy or not with your phone. I was simply correcting your statement that you could simply walk into an Apple store and exchange your black iphone 4 for a white iphone 4.

To whom ever it concerns: Exchanging your phone/canceling your contract within the 30 days incurs a 10% restocking fee. Not bad, right?........10% on the full retail price. So if you want to exchange your black iphone 4 for a white iphone 4 it will cost you time, money ($60-70) and paperwork.

In theory, yes there is a 30 day cooling off period.

It's just a shame that so many will be abusing that rule.
I'm sure there are ALOT of i4 users who wanted white but bought black with the intention of swapping for a white on release. Their intention of buying the black is not to "try" the product but merely use it as a substitute because they were too impatient and had to be first off the block.

Sucks, because I'm sure there were plenty of people that would have been happy with or even wanted a black one but were unable to get hold of one.

Those you speak of will be able to get theirs. They too will need to exhibit this patience you talk about. I waited in line for 7 hours, and got myself one launch day. I wasn't special, I just did what I had too.

I bought the black iPhone even though I had my heart set on the white. My mom is going to get the white when it comes out, & switch with me. She isn't as much of a "geek" as me, so she didn't mind waiting a bit longer to upgrade from her 3GS. Win/Win.

At least they'll have to pay $60-70 more.

Yeah, hopefully second half of July doesn't mean July 31st.

oh yeah I forgot in this forum if you return an item your a scumbag. why do they offer returns if its so morally wrong?

Returning a phone because it doesn't suit your needs is one thing. Returning a phone because you bought the black version because you couldn't wait for the white is a completely different story.

Returning a perfectly good phone because you want a different color is not what returns are meant for.

I'd say neither situation is anyones business but the purchaser and apple's.

You've misconstrued my entire post. Purchasing a limited-availability device only to exchange it for a different color of the same limited-availability device (even more so, since white isn't avilable) is simply unethical. You've taken a black phone from someone who had otherwise would have been able to purchase if you waited for white, only to exchange it for a white one, which again takes another phone from someone who would have otherwise purchased it. It's selfish. Plain and simple.

Please don't misconstrue my words or try to make it look like I said something I didn't. I'm here sharing my opinion just like you.

Who's business it is matters not. It has nothing to do whether it's right or wrong.

While i agree with the premise, ...i mean i have no idea why some just cant wait a little while if they really want a white one,....... but if they let you return it, why not?

Then again i have no idea why anybody would want to wait i line for hours just to get a product they can get the next week or two without waiting in line at all. If i really wanted a white one, or thought i would want a white one, ...i think id wait til they actually had some. But thats just me. I dont get overly excited about things.

You make a fair point, but I still partially disagree. I wouldn't care either. The fact is, right now, it's a limited-availability product. Not everyone can walk in and purchase theirs right now.

You should look over some of my previous posts. Essentially, there is a way to exchange, however Apple will make it as difficult and pricey as possible.

In all, you're looking at $60-70, plus the time it takes for AT&T to reinstate your upgrade (time you won't have an iPhone 4). So why not just wait the few extra weeks?

If it were up to me, I wouldn't let it happen at all. I think the impulse buyer must deal with the item they bought. Just because they don't have the patience to wait for the item they really wanted, doesn't mean Apple should pay for it.

I Can agree with you on the limited front. As when I see the threads of scumbags buying em just to sell em for profit here I get annoyed cause other people that actually want one to use it can't get one. So as far as at launch I understand that. But I see people giving other people crap on this site all the time for simply returning something. Like Apple is going to go out of business
cause they have to take back an item, refurbish it and resell it.

Right, and you think Apple wants to throw away a perfectly good phone because someone doesn't have the patience to wait?

Thats what the restocking fee is for. if Apple didnt want too they just wouldn't allow it period.
