Too bad its underpowered. It size and weight would make a great in the field photography device for all my landscape travels.

About getting the new MacBook? First off let me mention that I like Apple products and have been buying them ever since I was a teenager.

Since you were a teenager? So at least 3 years then, maybe up to 8 years? :D

I think the new MacBook has a beautiful design and should be a nice convenient MacBook to carry around. Personally I love the design, but I have to agree with people complaining about it being under powered. That being said I don't think most people need a machine that has so much power.

I am wondering how well it would run Fusion or Parallels. If it can handle basic windows VMs I think it would be worth it for me.

Did anyone just read David Pogue's review of the nMB for yahoo.com? I'll post his conclusion:

"But unless you’re a well-heeled executive who doesn’t do much besides write, email, and surf the Web, the price you pay — in speed, utility, and, yes, price — is just too high.

We know what this is: This is the 2008 MacBook Air. Today, the MacBook Air is frequently cited as the best laptop on the market — but the first model, in 2008, was also called overpriced, underpowered, and amazing-looking. In the same way, the 12-inch MacBooks of 2016 and 2017 will lose their flaws, enter a new era of USB-C compatibility, and seem much more at home in a more wireless world.

Even Apple is allowed to start with a 1.0 version. But you don’t have to buy it."

Whoa. I was almost yielding to temptation before I read this. Reinforces my decision to wait the first two waltzes out before I buy one.

The new MacBook blows the original Air out of the water performance wise.

If you think its underpowered then buy an Air or Pro. For light thin and retina this is is state of the art and we can't have everything.
On the other hand I do think they should have also done an Air with retina.
Also would have been cinema for the MacBook to have four lane PCI instead of two.

you bought 500 of something basically no one has ever used before? wow...

Yes, they did because

...For us it's fine. Nobody can argue that. Nobody can decide our use case but us.

And don't try to argue. They know better than anybody else. What an employee and company...

...like those who employ the trolls who argue here and try to convince people not to buy something when it's none of their business.

Oh, sure, like you have to mind your own business which needs to be taken care of badly reading your post.

We will see that. We have to wait some more days to be sure of this.

So the new computer from 2015 is faster than the one from 2008?

(slow 80's movie clap)

I went down to the apple store and looked at it, and not gonna lie, it is a gorgeous looking machine. But it seemed a little pokey just pulling up web pages on it.

Still, I vacillated. The young bearded, piereced and tatted hipster* graciously offered to help me order one online since they didn't have any actual stock in the store. And looked at me with incomprehension when I asked him why I would want to drive downtown, duel for a parking space and jostle among the crowd if I wanted to order one online.

*Seriously, does Apple retail have a recruiting booth at Burning Man? Is that the ONLY place they have one?

Uh, that doesn't necessarily describe a hipster. That's what half of the guys between 20-40 look like in any big city. Where do you live?

Just something to add next year to make it faster.

I wouldn't care about the new rMB being underpowered. If I buy one, I'll use it for MS Office, emails, school-related softwares, web-browsing, video-streaming, viewing guitar tabs, writing some stuff, etc. As a matter of fact, my Galaxy tablet 10.1 from 2011 with BT keyboard handles most of those tasks just fine. However, operating a tablet for those tasks is very tiring. I would love to carry my 15" MBP around with me since it is infinitely more functional and versatile, but it is a bit heavy, and takes up a lot of space in bags.

The new rMP will be best of both worlds for me - portability and functionality. And it should at least perform better than my mid-2009 MBP.

The deciding factor for purchase will come down to 2 things. First, I am not sure about 12" screen. Sure my tablet is 10", but at rMB's price I would love to have bigger screen. So I have to decide whether 12" screen is enough for my preferences. Second, like most people, I am curious about the keyboard. I am concerned that newly designed keys might hinder typing experience. And, since rMP is 12", the keys might be small and tightly arranged.

Hopefully Apple stores around me get display models soon so I can test it out.

If you've decided that you want to skip this laptop, STAY OUT OF THE APPLE STORE.

Spouse and I decided we were sitting this one out, but foolishly decided to check them out and they're flat out gorgeous machines.

Truthfully, had they had them in stock, we both probably would have left the store with one. Thankfully they didn't, and my whole wheat side was able to get back into the driver's seat after learning that I'd have to wait a few weeks to get one from online. Thank God.

I'm going to have to stay out of my local Apple Store for the next few months. Thankfully, it's located in Penn Square Mall, which helps.

Think I am out. Tried a 1.1 in the local Apple store today and it`s everything we have heard; The display is fabulous the colours really pop. The keyboard is a non issue for me, the the keys have very shallow travel, however they are extremely responsive with very nice positive feedback. Trackpad works as promised, a clever development on the original. All in all it`s a great package, definitely best looking Notebook I have ever seen.

The bad, the 1.1 display model was still in 10.10.2, which is not a big deal, just an observation. Switching the display to 1440x900 (scaled) which for me is a necessity, opening multiple apps in fullscreen lag in the UI was very apparent more so than I have seen on any other Retina I also noticed that the demo units software image was sparse to say the least, only Apple applications, certainly nothing heavyweight, I had to take pause to think what to open to load the GPU. Equally was able to induce the lag repeatedly and am now not confident the MacBook will deal with my workflow without overly lagging.

The store was packed being the weekend, so I will likely go back midweek and have another look on a freshly booted machine to see if there is any difference. I have always had concern on the GPU`s capabilities due how OS X scales/renders Retina. Apple advised in store availability will be 4 weeks FWIW.

I am definitely going to get a MacBook, however maybe not the current version as Skylake is not so far away and will likely resolve much of the GPU issues.

I have several Apple stores around my home and work, there's no way I'd be able to resist, I'm too weak.

The force is strong in this one.... :D

Interesting. The five I got my hands on yesterday were 10.10.3. I loaded up a dozen 1080p YouTube videos, changed the resolution toe 1440x900, then opened Excel, Word and iMovie and checked for things like UI lag and did not see anything of note. It was noticeably better than the MBA 11" I had last month.

I changed my mind after working with MacBook Air over this weekend. Can not do non retina. One thing the impressions with pics helped me decide was on space grey. The gold looks better on apples website than it does in reviews and in person pics.

Just tried the one MB, and was able to see the lag by pushing the apps to fullscreen. Am going to go back midweek when I have more time to look at one. Another member has also observed the same lag on 10.10.3 so it`s not isolated.

Lets see, am still open to one, equally much of my workflow is in fullscreen/spaces so this does concern as it wasn't just dropping the odd frame it was a pretty good slowdown. In another context this display machines get hammered all day, especially a new model in a busy flagship store.

Certainly inclined to hold off until people physically get them and we see the feedback.
