A friend of mine tried to pre-order on the Apple website today. She got the message about being unable to complete set up online, so she called the 1-800 number to try it that way. They weren't able to complete the order, either, and told her she'd have to go to the store on the 24th to finish it there. They also told her that since she had already started the order, she would have a phone reserved for her. Do you think she got bad information? If that were true, I would be a little annoyed, as I ordered last night (as soon as I was able to get through), and I'm one of the July 2 people. If what they told her was true, wouldn't there be a lot of phones reserved for people who won't pick them up? (For example, I tried using my brother's number, and I got the message. I have no intention of picking up a phone for him, I just wanted to see what would happen. Although, if what they told her is true, I would cancel my order, go pick his up, and do an upgrade swap.)

I guess basically I'm just asking if this is too good to be true. I'd hate for her to go to the Apple store (30 minutes away) early, and be late for work for nothing.

ummm...I think she got bad info. I tried to complete an order 100's of times and every single time I got an error. I have no phone reserved.

That's what I figured. At first I just though, "lucky her," but the more I thought about it, the less likely it seemed....Thanks.

@sarahleigh

Have your friend call the store to find out if there is a phone reserved there.

I had this issue when ordering my wife's phone. I wasn't able to even this morning...

Good news... It worked just now. I have a pre-order for her. Bad news... It ships mid July. Good news... mine went through before they ran out yesterday. So I get mine on June 24th... I'm glad I did mine first. :p :D

Yesterday I was told by an Apple rep in the store that you couldn't get the phone shipped to your house, only reserves for in-store pickup.

Today I was told they weren't doing pre-orders anymore and he refused to come to the computer and look at the Apple Store webpage that clearly has a button titled pre-order.

I also got the "unable to complete online setup" message and went to the Apple store and asked them about it because it said to go to an Apple store to complete the account setup. Three of the employees, including a manager, had no idea why the message was coming up.

The Apple reps that I dealt with had NO idea what they were talking about. It's frustrating to deal with employees like that.

Yup. I feel your pain. I had a lot of the same issues. Everyone was clueless and now we are screwed and no one really cares.

I finally got through on the Apple site for the July 14th shipping date. Now I'm torn. I want to try my luck at the AT&t store thats near me on June 24th. But if I can't get it then, I don't know what the Apple.com shipping date may be.

Finally!

Yup. I got mine to go through finally too.
I feel so relieved but on some level a little jipped (sp?) too. I was prepared as much as I could be and I'd been trying this same process since just after preorders started. And, through no fault of my (our) own, I (we) am scheduled to get this phone 3 weeks (+ shipping time) later than originally hoped. It just doesn't seem right. Oh well. I guess it could be worse?

Cheers!

Mine worked too! :)

Added it to my cart...but of course now the question is -- do we wait a month or try our luck on launch day??

I'm thinking I'm going to try my luck at an AT&T store on launch day...what about you guys?

Waiting the month. The $251.41 is pending in my account right now. I thought they didn't take the money out until it shipped? Oh well, it doesn't matter either way.

I'm gonna try my luck on launch day. Id I didn't lose my blackberry last week and have to use a regular samsung phone, i would just wait the month. But since I don't have a phone with internet anymore, I feel lost.

Is this still happening for anybody here besides me? I'm a new customer (though not a new iPhone user - I'll miss you T-Mobile), so I'm not sure if it's isolated to AT&T newbies? Incredibly frustrating!

and the most frustrating thing is that you CAN order with the iphone apple store app. So it's obviously a bug that no one cares to address.

Can I use the Apple Store app to order as a new customer? Every time I try all I get is a big blue "Make a Reservation" button that leads nowhere. Does an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone affect the ability to use the app?

I spent about 6 hours on Tuesday trying to preorder a phone to be picked up at the store in Cambridge, MA. I finally got a screen saying I could pick up a phone next Thursday, but never received a confirmation e-mail. On Wednesday I called the store and they said I was not on the list. They asked me to send a screenshot of my "We'll see you at the store" screen and they would "see what they could do."

I hadn't heard anything by yesterday, so I called Apple Store customer service and after spending about 45 mins on hold I spoke with a rep who was nice but unhelpful, then his manager, who said that if I could get an order number he would try to expedite it.

I tried to place an order and ended up with the "unable to complete setup online" screen. I have a Virigin Mobile phone and am not aware of anything that would prevent me from opening an AT&T account. So I went to the Apple Store today, and they were unable to help. They said they were aware of the problem, didn't know what was wrong, thought it was AT&T and that they were waiting for instructions from Apple.

Regardless of where the problem originates I'm disgusted with Apple that they haven't fixed it after three days. Such a waste of time.

Tried again, almost a full 7 days after it went on sale. Still "we were unable to complete set up online." What an absolute disaster.
