My wife and I have iPhone 15 Pro Maxes and we paid off the phones late last year - the feeling of being payment free is so nice I don’t think we’re going to upgrade this year, from that fact alone lol.
I get loans for cars as they are needed for so much, but paying off an iPhone over years just does not make sense to me. And even contemplating getting a new one this year baffles me. There is so little that it actually gives you with an update. Yes you get better photos, but really that is about it. I use a regular 13 still, apps open quick and fast, takes decent pictures. I will probably upgrade this year but it is through work so I don't pay for it. So I can get a free iPhone but I see no point in it.

Yeah the upgrades are so minor these days. Here in the USA we have the Apple Card - gives us 0% interest so - helps the “pay off over years” mentality - especially now when a loaded iPhone is $1800+.

I used to be on the Apple Upgrade plan - where you’d get almost 50% of your iPhone value given back to you and were able to upgrade every year. I fell for that back in the day - now? We’ve had our phones for 2 years now and … not going to upgrade anytime soon.

You guys don’t think that insurance companies will refuse to insure human drivers when it is shown that FSD can reduce crash/accidents significantly more than human drivers?

Insurance rates are already crazy high.
It’ll just be more expensive. The problem is so many people drive without insurance and a valid driver’s license.

This is what they will do... They will eventually price it out so high that it would be cheaper for you to buy vehicle with L2+ driver's aids. They can simply say everyone pays one rate, but you get a 50% discount if your vehicle has Advanced Drivers Assistance. If the difference costs more than monthly payments for a new vehicle, are you going to still fight it? Or would you buy a newer vehicle and save money?

Actually insurance is falling at its fastest rate for a decade over here.

FSD only works when all cars have it and its 100% reliable.

We haven’t even approved FSD in the UK yet. So definitely not in my lifetime.

who really needs an $1800 iPhone? I know there is very little we actually need, but this is Apple marketing at its best. The vast majority of photos anyone takes with their iPhone no one will ever look at, the people who do don't care. I was fine with my old XR, apps loaded as fast as they do on my 13, at least from what I can tell. Yes camera is better, but that is really the only noticeable improvement. I used to updated every 2 years with my iPhone. As I got older I just sort of recognized this was stupid and other then a rush with a new product nothing in my life changed for the better.

Assuming you pay for your cars monthly. I can’t see that being the approach for decades.

When do you think it will be proven that FSS can reduce crashes/accidents significantly?

I had an X when my son was born Oct 2021. My wife had a 7+. I am still kicking myself for not buying newer phones (13 was just out) the week before delivery. The pictures I got on the X were terrible next to the 13 Pro Maxs that I got us both. That was $1800 per phone, I did the 0% financing because, why not...

We use our cameras every day so family can see the development of our son via a shared album. Best thing we did.

We still have our 13 Pro Max, and see no need to change them. But that jump between X and on was huge, now not so much.

I am getting there. I used to be the guy that had to have the latest and greatest no matter what. This September will be the first time I’ve ever kept a phone for more than 2+ years.

My neighbor with her $200 Android phone - which is very usable - was the kicker for me. lol.

Tesla sure seems to think there’s a huge difference - obviously, the best stats are 3rd party non affiliated. Based on my experience with FSD on my 2024, it is far safer than the average human (obviously my opinion doesn’t mean anything - but I don’t think they’re going to have a difficulty proving it when they decide to).

I use a Nikon camera. Blows all smartphones out of the water. Always will!

Where do you live that insurance is falling? If you don’t mind me asking. I’m here in California and cost of living has gotten to the point where I don’t think I can keep living here anymore (and both my partner and I work).

Well, in this future state, even if you own the vehicle outright, and if the insurance cost difference is more than a monthly car payment, it makes sense to have a monthly payment of a newer vehicle, rather than spend more money to insure an older owned vehicle. Especially when you factor in maintenance of an older vehicle.

I agree it will be a while, but it is coming...

Yes but the maintenance of an older vehicle is less of an issue with an EV no?
Personally I’ll never be paying for a car monthly.

I have a Canon R7 Mirrorless. Yes, it does. But I don't have my R7 with me 99.9% of the time, while I 100% have my iPhone. My parents are elderly and don't travel anymore. They live in Florida while we are in NY. Giving them pictures/videos of my son that they will never get to see is worth the $4k in phones...

What's that saying, the best camera is the one you actually have with you?

I mean, I did have to replace my induction heater $2k, and buy 2 sets of tires (my wife's and mine) $3k this year.

Yes, it will be less, but things will start to fail like suspension components and other things. If you have to refresh your suspension on you i3 + new tires and your ins costs go up to more than a new car payment, wouldn't it be financially smart to pay less net money out and end up with a newer vehicle?

You likely won't be around for this change over, so you probably are right saying you will never have a car note.

Tesla insurance is already doing this in certain markets. It’s only a 10% discount but it’s just the start

You realize to insure both of my EVs (my partner and mine) - we pay almost $500/mo here in CA? :)

And we both have perfect records. No accidents, no tickets, nothing (last 10 years+).

We pay $512/month for 2 EVs. I had 2 not at fault accidents where I was injured, but my rates did not change. I also have very high limits.

Tesla insurance is about $150/mo less for me - compared to State Farm - but after reading some horror stories and how you can’t get a human - I tried to call to get a human and couldn’t. So cancelled the day I signed up and went back to State Farm (been with them since I started driving as a kid) lol.
