I've been going naked for a while and just got my 5s 2 weeks ago and it has been naked as well. My parents got me Apple's leather case for it and while I do think I should protect the phone, especially since I'm just at the beginning of my contract, I'm not sure if I want to keep it as the phone is so nice in the nude

I'm using the Apple bumper, and I like it:

- less noisy when I put it down on the table
- easier to grab

Good point, that's exactly why they have insurance.

Yes but dont you think that Applecare plus is "silly waste of money" at 99 dollars for ONE year whereas a decent case can protect your phone for years for one time small fee of 20 dollars?

Having dropped my iP 4 at least a couple times, getting out of the car, I thanked the tech gods that it was in a case.

And now the 5S is in a case--haven't dropped it yet, but it's just a matter of time. The naked iPhone is just so slippery!

The case is mainly to protect myself from my own clumsiness...the poll could just as easily be "do you feel occasionally clumsy?" Like when you've had too much to drink, or haven't had your morning coffee?

Of course, if you've got the financial wherewhithal to self-insure, no problem.

I've dropped two different 4S iPhones onto hard tiled floors at my job before. All that happened was the plastic surrounding the glass on one corner chipped. Picked them up both times and wiped it off and went on caseless.

I also dropped a Nexus 4. Forgot it was in my lap when I got out of the car and it fell in the street. Just got a few nicks in the bezel. That was months ago and it's still caseless.

Then you got insanely lucky. I dropped a Galaxy Nexus and a Galaxy SIII out of my pocket while bending over and sent cracks all over. A friend of mine had her iPhone 4 slip off of a table and when she picked it up the whole thing was spider-webbed. Now keep in mind these weren't the ONLY times they fell, but it happened.

Let me tell you: if you drop phones, every time it is a gamble whether or not it'll get ruined. Just because your coin landed heads-up doesn't mean you'll never get tails. That one time it lands wrong and destroys the screen you'll wish you'd spent $15 on a case.

If you're super careful and NEVER drop your phone, or are rarely in a position to drop it on anything hard? By all means. I know a lot of people who only pop it in the case when they're going outside for a while. But for something that moves around as much as it does and spends so much time in a pocket? I'm protecting the hell out of it.

Went naked recently on my 4S and accumulated some scratches and damage. Though I haven't really been careful with it seeing how old it is. But I imagine I'll be much more careful when I get a new iPhone.

Naked since the first iPhone came out. Cases are lame, get applecare+ if your not responsible enough with your things.

So you're gonna spend $100 and have to send your phone back in, putting you without it for a while, rather than popping it in a $20 sleeve? Intelligent!

Not to mention, I wonder if I'm alone in thinking a lot of cases look really slick. All iPhones look the same, why not splash a little individuality on yours? Caseless and with stock ringtones is like "oh hey, my phone is just like everyone else's."

LOL....seriously? Sigh. Please post pics of your slick looking case, I can't wait to see the slick case. Nothing looks or feels better than a naked iPhone. Obviously you have no idea about applecare+ because you think that you have to send it in. And then you speak of intelligence....well lets see:) I upgrade to every new iPhone, the good ones anyway. I resell my old phone of course and it always looks pristine, but how is that done you ask? Because with applecare+ you just pick up a new one before resale then sell it as new and get top dollar. More than makes up for the price of Applecare+ and also I don't have to buy those slick cases that you speak of....Keep buying your slick cases, you are great for the economy:)

I agree. I refuse to have a case on my 5S and now my Retina Mini is caseless as well. My original Mini was caseless for six months before selling it.

Point conceded on Applecare+, wasn't aware. As for slick cases, that's all personal preference. I -personally- like the look of a lot of cases. You don't, so... we're at a bit of an impasse there. But if you want examples: I love the Belkin Grip Candy in black/ice, or several of the other slim cases.

I'll tell ya what, I'm gonna do something you don't see on the internet very often: I'm gonna look deep into AppleCare+ and see if maybe it really is worth it and would make leaving the thing naked worth it.

THAT SAID: I had mine naked for a few hours today and it picked up a minuscule scuff on its back that's driving me crazy. I don't mind a nicked up case, but if I'm holding an iPhone and it's got little "daily use" scratches and scuff marks that drives me bonkers.

Also, I will not bend on screen protectors. It's not a question of cracks in that case, but pocket scratches and the like (I still have haunted dreams of my "gorilla glass" phones that had little lines all over them). Unless someone has some evidence that these things don't scratch up over time, that's gonna be on there period.

Naked 90% of the time
I have a rubber case for when I know I'll be doing something risky (I do outdoor sports, fishing, hunting, etc.) and a Sena Ultraslim I use sometimes around the office. Only busy days I know I won't have a lot of time to pay attention to my phone, that way I don't have to worry about accidental scratches while handling a bunch of other things.

Yeah until you drop it the next day your warranty expires and it is all bent to hell.

Considering I have never dropped an iPhone of any generation I'm personally not too concerned.

Well, with Applecare+ they do express replacement so your not without anything.
Not to mention you can go into an Apple store.

I don't really mind some cases while some are just fugly some are ok, screen protectors however are just stupid.

If you're a careful user? By all means. My thing is that I've never "dropped" a phone, per se. More like I've had a dog run into me or it's just fallen out of a pocket on a loose jacket, and I don't want it to happen again without a case. But, as you said...

Point conceded above. Gonna look into it myself.

EDIT: Whoa. Per Apple's website...

AppleCare+ for iPhone provides coverage for up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling. For AppleCare+ for iPhone purchased after September 10, 2013, each incident is subject to a $79 service fee plus applicable tax.

Uh. I don't think I want to spend $100 on AppleCare+ then another $79+tax for a replacement...

I know 4 people, including my wife, that had fairly minimal cases on their phones and still broke their screens from a drop. Most cases only protect from scratches but not impact (unless otter box defender, life proof, etc).

Naked as in no installed case - like a Lifeproof or the like - and no screen shield like a Zagg.

Got a belt case to keep it out of my pocket and away from keys, pens, etc.

I went from a case to a bumper to nothing but a screen protector (front and back) on my iP5. I do have AppleCare+ though, and I'm fine paying to replace my phone if something should happen.

All you need to do is drop a phone on concrete once and you'll never go naked again.

Word. I had been thinking of going naked, and then just the other day I dropped my phone face down from waist height onto a cement floor. The Speck case saved my day.

Since then, I've been looking around at slip cases. I mean the type that you remove the phone from when you want to use it. I might go that route.

It is kind of sad, really. For all practical purposes my phone isn't made from aluminum. It's made from soft plastic case material.

Exactly. One of the biggest selling points, at least for me, is that with Apple, anything happens to your phone, you stroll into the closest apple store (we have 4 in seattle area) and its hassle free walk in and walk out with new phone. No RMAing, no hours on the phone with customer service trying to prove that the issue you're having warrants a replacement, no waiting for a phone in the mail.

Unless I'm mistaken, it's now $79+tax for that. Any phone bought after September 30 of this year. And you can only do it twice. So if you're confident that you'll only drop it once and don't mind spending almost $200 on it... go for it I guess.

Really? Even for non applecare+ issues, say something that would be covered by the standard warranty they now charge $79?
