I had both the 14 M2 MBP and the new 15 air and had a heck of a time deciding. Yes agree the screen is better on the MBP. HOWEVER - the 15 form factor is better, it feels lighter, more modern, easier to use for me on the coach due to taller screen for reading. I have had NO issues washing movies. and its still $400 cheaper!
What colour?

Wondering, anyone with the 15" air experience some bugginess? Hard to explain, but I noticed when in iphoto, when you usually click on a photo it should expand to become larger, but that is not happening, emails are slower to open. Not a huge issues just noticing here and there (I have the 16gb/512) model.
thx!

I haven't noticed that particular issue. It sounds like a software or configuration issue - maybe something running in the background? - but I'm not sure.

The one I returned was doing that in iPhoto, wouldn’t enlarge photos, I have a 24” iMac with apple track pad never an issue with it.

There is a LOT of talk of people "preferring the 14 pro" or the 15" air is too big, or not bright enough, just trying to get an idea if anyone loves theirs? I Have one and like it, maybe not as much as my 14 MBP, but love the extra screen for documents and reading... and love the weight distraction for slipping into a bag. Have traveled with it on a place, also not an issue...
Who is returning them and not happy and what are you sticking with?
In the end the are are amazing machines!
Love my 15" Air. Screen is ev very bit as bright as was my 2020 M1. Sound is insanely great. The 15" screen is my sweet spot

There is a misconception that the MacBook Pro displays are inherently better in every way over the Air's displays of either size. This is only true for the ProMotion and miniLED features on the Pro's (deep blacks are always welcome and a draw). But it ends there. I never used the HDR brightness on my Pros because Apple foolishly disabled the user color calibration option with these panels. If you use the workaround and calibrated with the on-board color calibrator, HDR features and brightness levels are disabled. I opted for bypassing HDR in favor of using my own color profiles versus sticking with Apple's awful, green-shifting and dingy factory calibrations (to my eyes).

The displays on the M2 Airs are a huge improvement over the M1 Airs, and the color vibrancy, white balance, pixel density and brightness (non HDR) look the same to my very picky and OCD eyes on either the Pro or the Air.

In fact, the Airs that I've seen don't have the film or overlay that Apple is using on the Pro's that cause a color shift when you look at the display off angle a bit (more noticeable on white backgrounds). This used to annoy me. Some panels shift pink which is easier to my eyes, but others shift green/dingy, which was unacceptable to me. I have also found that the white balance on my Airs is better than the Pros I've had. Of course, this can also vary from panel to panel even within the same model line.

It's all about what each individual wants and needs. For me, the thin and light form-factor of the Air line outweighs my desire for deep blacks (miniLED). ProMotion is a nice-to-have, but not a deal breaker for me as it's less noticeable on a MacBook than it is on an iPad Pro. If there was an option for a miniLED or similar on the Air, yes, I'd go for it, but the absence of this and or ProMotion does not make the Air's displays bad or inferior when it comes to color vibrancy, clarity, pixel density, white balance and brightness.

If you want and or need HDR, ProMotion and miniLED and a lot of processing power, the Pro is for you. If you don't need the heavy processing power and want a thinner, lighter, fast, fan-less, cool running, Mac with long battery life with a larger, high-quality display, the 15" MacBook Air is for you.
Thanks for this writeup. I've always fancied myself picky about display quality and used to do gobs of Photoshop work for prepress back in the day when monitors could be super flaky. I am with you on HDR—that's a troy and a distraction on the MBP's best I can tell. Apple will need to up its screen refresh game across the board just because I imagine the technology and competition will force it. What would that be? Air motion, maybe.

Question: one big difference I noticed between the 15" air and the 14 m2 Pro.
15 Air - left large side (1"+) on most screens
14 m2 Pro did not leave any extra space on sides
why is this? Is the 15 m2 Air not optimized? If not when will it be?
thanks!
There is a desktop scheme available in Ventura called Stage Manager. If it is activated, then it will carve out about an inch on the left side of the screen for new windows. If you have copied all your setting from an old machine to a new one, and especially if the new machine has a newer macOS than the old machine, you may have a bit more strangeness to come including display resolution differences and for reasons always mysterious to me, occasional setting that get changed somehow in the transition.

Yes – for example on first reboot, the loading screen after entering password shrinks to the size of the 13 inch air with a black border around the right and bottom. Doesn't happen again, but wouldn't be surprised that this is part of a bigger issue. When the 14" Pro first came out there were some issues that were specific to that device, like glitches in settings.

WELL, on a more cheerful note, I have decided which device I am going with, and that is the 15" MBA (16/512)!

Hi KP,

Good thread, lots of good info teased out from it! :)

I've ordered the same config for the missus, but in Starlight, to replace her ailing Windows Laptop.

16/512 is probably way overkill, but the Air has got to knock it out the park in terms of speed etc. as she is coming from Windows and is VERY skeptical about making the switch to MacOS.

Good read this thread, thanks!

Martin.

thank you - appreciated! Tough crowd but good advice nonetheless :)
This machine will easily hold up to a windows machine as you describe. Perfect computer for reading on!

what did you return it for another 15?
I am still having the issues, I've noticed if I select the photo and hit enter it wall open in "large" mode, but about half still won't let me "click" to expand to large photo view mode....

I didn't get another one, it wasn't buggy in general, was just when you double tapped a photo in iPhotos it wouldn't enlarge.

Sounds like a corrupted preference. I would do following:
1. Make an new user, login and try the same in new user. If the problem dissappears, some your Photos or other related preferences are corrupted.
3. If the problem persists, I'd do complete erase (of hard drive) and full reinstall. Also, do NOT copy anything from old user folder. Make a new user, then login with Apple ID and your things should be back.
4. Mostly should be fixed by now.

if it doesn't enlarge, maybe it doesn't have the photo in bigger resolution (because it is not downloaded, or etc). You may also trash older library (given that you have iCloud backup), delete photos with all preferences, reinstall Photos and create a new library.

mine were all downloaded same as on my iMac 24", wouldn't enlarge.

I have a 15" M2 Macbook Air now, it replaces a Lenovo Yoga which was long suffering since 2017. ;)

My other Macs are all powerful Mac Pro desktops. I didn't want another laptop that was going to feel hobbled. It is large enough to feel like a proper computer and not too heavy. Happy with that.

The midnight colour looks great but I suspect it will be like cars with "klavierlack" - will show fingerprints and dirt easily.

Have just tried the Photos thing and it works fine here - double click/tap to open and enlarge. No lagginess (is that even a word?) either.

ya not on mine, you have to insistently press the photo about 5 times are more to open. Very odd. No luck at apple either.

This is a great computer, and I really want to keep it -- but I'm having even more trouble believing I can justify it with an M1 16" Max as "desktop," M1 Air (unfortunately 8GB) as laptop, and M3 on the horizon. Wish the damn thing had come out a year ago and I hadn't bought the former, which is awesome but depreciated like crazy.
