This is a great computer, and I really want to keep it -- but I'm having even more trouble believing I can justify it with an M1 16" Max as "desktop," M1 Air (unfortunately 8GB) as laptop, and M3 on the horizon. Wish the damn thing had come out a year ago and I hadn't bought the former, which is awesome but depreciated like crazy.
You could sell the m1 16 I suppose?
Or get the upcoming 13 air to complement the 16?

Too much loss on the m1 16 max after a year - anyway it has a long term future as a desktop to replace the iMac Pro for number crunching.

Last day of return window on my 16GB/1TB; in genuine agony over whether to keep it or wait it out for M3.

I have an m1 Air and M1P MBP14.
I had an itch to replace the m1 air to air 15 by adding $450. In the end i figured that my MBP14 is quite faster than M1 Air, and it will be no different if i go with M2 Air 15.

Decided that just was a shopaholic idea which is not good to cater.

For your case, if you are budget oriented, then having best of the best is already a win and no deal to take a loss to upgrade to lower class product.
If money is no object at all, then whatever it takes to make you happy.

I decided i can live with M1 air until the good replacement comes.

yeah tough one. last day return for your 15? You can go past 14 days (30 if have a good reason). but that's what I have and it's a great machine! I sold my m2 16" a while back, I just did not like the weight... was too much for me. If if you want a mobile device consider a more base model 15?

What's "a good reason"?

I switched from the 16" M1 MBP to the 15" MBA and love it. Definitly keeping it. Already sold my 16". Yes it depreciated but it's worth it day to day for the form factor of the 15". And so far the performance of the 15" is great. For what I do there is no appreciable difference. I'm even impressed by how good the speakers on the 15" sound. All in all it's great if it matches your use case.

I'm still getting little blips where the system seems to pause for a second or two. The only thing I can see is that it seems to happen when memory pressure is yellow. I can't see it linked to any specific apps or things like bluetooth. I've tried a reboot; all applications now up to date.

Is anyone else seeing anything similar?

Its a 16GB w/1TB machine.

not really, maybe a few times here and there. We have two ofthse 15" one base 8g, 512 and one 16gb, 1tb. It weird can see hardly any difference in performance at ALL between the two.. the way everyone was talking bout 8gb, you'd think the thing wouldn't even work :) but has been quiet the opposite! the 16gb does open complex spreadsheets just a TAD quicker.

After going through this thread, I really took a good look at possibly returning my 15" MacBook Air 16gb/1TB model and buying the 14" 16gb/1tb MacBook Pro. At the end of the day, I'm not using my MacBook for heavy editing that would need to be a powerhouse. I have found that for what I do, this MacBook Air has been one of my favorite MacBooks I've ever owned. I can easily throw this into my backpack and take it with me, and the 15" Display size has been amazing for light video editing, editing photos, and of course my real estate work. I'd say if somebody is on the fence, go for it!

Been talking to Apple support about the memory pressure issue and slight blips - they think it might be a faulty bluetooth chip based on the tests we did last night, so they want me to return it. I'm tempted to get 24GB RAM - the other option would be to go for a 14" MBP with 32GB RAM, but I really prefer the 15" form factor of the Air so I think I'll go for that.

It's really strange behaviour though. Just now, with memory pressure green, it's lagged when getting various notifications from Fantastical and web browsers running office apps. The analyst was also wondering about using it under load with a Studio Display, but activity monitor looks fine and surely that's reasonable use. I'm going to try a full reset today anyway to see.

Been using a 15 inch air 512/16 for almost two weeks now. Definitely keeping it and selling off my 16 inch M1 Pro, and maybe even my 13 inch M1 air. If the 16 inch wasn't twice as thick and much heavier I'd keep it for the better upward firing speakers and screen but the comfort of the 15 inch of how the body is lower to the surface I type on, and the featherweight-ness of it is just leagues better for me. The screen isn't that much smaller than the 16 inch, and I don't use the HDMI or SD card slot at all so those are negligible factors for me.

I also have only used my 13 inch air once for the past two weeks. The 15 inch air is like the 13 inch...but just better with a useable (imo) screen size. And the increased weight is barely imperceptible to me, while the 16 inch feels like double the weight of both of them.

Hi All,

We had been using the 15" for the last couple of days.

The missus loves it

- The integration of the phone photos is great.

- The 15" is top notch

- I'll try and get her onto Touch ID next!

I'm impressed as well 😀

- The 15" is much better for bigger print

- Really solid build

- No Sharp air vents - E.g. the MBP 14

- Sound is great for TV - Music less so.

I am seeing this on a M2 Pro 14, occasional mouse stuttering

Did clean install fix for you?

Clean install hasn't fixed it so I'm returning it to Apple and have ordered a 24GB machine to replace it which should be here in the next couple of weeks.

that's good, I was going to say, I am in the middle of Canadian mountains right now and don't even have shuttering issues. works perfectly, kind of amazing - actually.

I cannot get over how convenient the 15" air is vs my MBP M2. Got the 1TB/16GB ram, I travel a lot from Florida to Alaska, working remotely and with my new little Waterfield Backpack I hardly know it's there and loves to sit on my lap ( who knew? a laptop for a LAP!) I got over my "gotta" have the deepest blacks" hangup and good riddance to my old MBP, for me. Never thought I would step down in performance and be happy.

It's really hard to walk away from the MBP. I had the 14 and had no plan to sell it. When the 15 MBA came out I had to try it. The most impressive thing was the extra 2-3 hours of battery life it gave me over the 14. I don't miss the "deepest blacks" thing but I do miss the improved speakers. But this MBA is just really appealing.

So, the replacement Air is here and there's no lag/stutter. Granted, its got more RAM, but the original issue was so random that I think it was something faulty - Apple suspected the bluetooth module.

It was a BTO machine so took a bit longer to get and I did keep checking the refurb store and price of 32GB MBPs, but I just love the 15" form factor so much. Am glad I was patient.

Who was having weird issues with their 15" Air and the Photos app? Just trying to rotate some images and they're taking 30 seconds+ each...

Waiting for an Oled MBA

If their goal is to sell computers that'd probably be the #1 best seller of all time. Maybe throw in the Pro speaker grills or a port on the other side for people that want their desk setup with cord on right. (or just an SD card reader please) Other than that the Air just seems like the perfect computer for 95% of people, and if these things keep getting more powerful and cooler it can continue to handle an even bigger chunk of professional tasks.

Only reason you'd go Pro at that point is for hours of gaming, 3D Blender type work, really big or long video work (8K RAW/1+ hour edits/etc) or if you just need to pump stuff out super fast in very little time like same day turn arounds.
