I'll upgrade my Retina Mini if they add 2GB RAM and if that split-screen app rumor is also coming to the Mini. Otherwise, I'll sit it out.

I'm hoping they'll make it lighter and more like the first gen Mini in terms of weight, but it seems like it'll just be spec bumps with Touch ID, which is unfortunate. If they do make it lighter, it will be a must-have for me because while the Mini isn't 'heavy", it's noticeably heavier than the original.

I own a 128GB iPad Air with cellular on Verizon. I see no reason to upgrade this upcoming update, nor do I ever see a reason to upgrade from one generation of just about any Apple product to the next (unless we're talking about the iPod touch, which doesn't get updates often enough).

If you look at the buyer's guide here on macrumors, the ipod touch has an average update cycle of 292 days which is the smallest update cycle time for portable apple devices.

I know the 2 updates in 2013 should actually be only one but still... Apple updates the ipod touch once a year.

My husband has an iPad 2, so I think I will likely get him a new one this year. I have a 4 that I got through work. I will probably not upgrade mine again this cycle.

No iPad changes here either. I'm satisfied with the non retina Mini for the most part, and my husband has last year's Air. Those were both upgrades over the original iPad, so we're on a two to three year upgrade cycle typically.

For some reason, I don't get as excited for the annoucement of new iPad's like I do for the iPhone. With that said, I have no intention of upgrading my rMini, so I'll be sitting this year out.

My wife, with an 'old' iPad 2, will upgrade

I used to work for Apple, so just before I left (and realizing there wasn't anything they could do, anyway, aside from cancel my order) I ordered several iPad 2s, a new Mac, new iTouches...etc. The orders went through without a hitch, and all was swell. So my wife now uses one of those 'long-in-the-tooth' iPad 2s I bought back in the day. She does want an iPad Mini to replace it, though, so it will be hers to decide whether that will be this new one or one of the to-be-heavily-discounted existing models. My iPad Air is fine. I love it.

No iPad changes for myself or my wife. Both have iPad mini's (1st gen) and they are perfectly fine for what we need them for. Got a baby on the way so I don't think we will be upgrading for a bit.

Same here. That something major will be the iPad Pro

From what I've read (speculation) is that 2 models will be announced; iPad Air 2 and an iPad Mini with Touch ID. If this is the case, I'll be holding onto my original iPad Mini.
What I'd really like is that 12" iPad if it ever materializes. That would definitely be a major upgrade!

I will *probably* be hanging onto my current iPad Air. I'll be waiting for the keynote before deciding for sure. There are a few things that might make me change my mind:

  • A significant (>15%) reduction in weight. Getting the iPad down to a pound was a huge step, but I use mine several hours per day and wouldn't mind if it shed a few more ounces. I think this is unlikely since the iPad just went through a major redesign last year. But it doesn't seem totally out of the realm of possibility.
  • A @3x screen. The Air's screen is great but could definitely stand to be a bit sharper. This one doesn't seem as far fetched as the weight reduction. We have seen several leaks pointing to an A8X chip for the next Air. In the past, X-variant chips have had the same processing power but extra graphics cores. Given the current Air's screen runs fine on the regular A7, I don't know why Apple would feel the need for an X-variant chip on the Air 2 unless it was moving to a higher res screen. There has also been the discovery of @3x iPad graphics in the iOS 8.1 beta, so this possibility is starting to look more and more likely.
  • Split screen multitasking turns out to be a killer feature or there is some other software innovation I haven't considered. I'll have to wait and see on this one but it would have to be something truly innovative to get me to upgrade without the reduced weight or improved screen.

My iPad has pretty much become my primary computer at home. Last year's weight reduction was huge. I don't mind upgrading again if there are serious improvements. But, if all the Air 2 turns out to be is a spec bump with Touch ID and a better camera, I'll be sticking with my current iPad for sure.

What on the new iPads is so compelling? Am I missing something?

Well considering the new iPads haven't been announced yet, it's a little tough to answer your question. It's entirely possible that we may see some significant software innovation, which of course is much easier to keep under wraps than new hardware stuff. I'm thinking that might be one reason for additional RAM on the iPad.

I'm not in debt. In 15 and have no job

Oh, I feel for you. I'm about to graduate and head into grad school. No job (but maybe an internship), but I've saved money (Bday, Christmas, etc) for the past 5 years and bought the iPhone 6 and have enough for an iPad, but I'm hesitant to use it. Priorities...

Plus, Apple needs to show me that the iPad is more capable than it currently is.

It's the same product and thusly shouldn't be counted as an actual update. If they designated it as anything other than "iPod touch (Fifth Generation)" then sure, but they don't. It's been the same hardware under the hood since its release 25 months ago.

Haha I bought my 6 with bday and Christmas money. And selling a kidney... Not a bad idea!!!

I've been on the fence with my original iPad Mini. Would the prospect of the arrival of a 12 inch screen iPad cause you to delay on this?

Update: Just read this
Supply chain sources have told The Wall Street Journal that a rumored larger iPad is being delayed until the iPhone 6 Plus can meet demands. While a delay is disappointing, the good news is that we have further evidence of a 12.9-inch iPad in the works. If true, the larger iPad will go into production for an early 2015 release.

This is what the source told the WSJ:

“The top priority for the supply chain is to meet the overwhelming demand for the larger screen iPhones. The output of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus remains unsatisfactory. It would be challenging for display makers to split resources and spend a few months to ramp up production for a new larger screen iPad now.”

My iPad mini serves an entirely different purpose than my iPad Air. I do writing and actual work on my iPad Air, play games here and there, surf the web here and these. My iPad mini is going to go in my car and be my infotainment center. I'll load the same music that was on my former iPod shuffle and is on the few 16GB Black and Silver (rear-camera-less) fifth generation iPod touches that I have, I'll pop it on my data plan, and use it to GPS me places while also playing my music and fetching my e-mail. Sure there is overlap between what I'd use a mini for versus an Air for, but the rumored iPad Pro and its arrival don't affect my purchasing plans for my next iPad mini.

Similarly, I don't yet know of a use for an iPad Pro that would make me want one over the Air and the mini, and if I'm apt to find one, then, for my wallet's sake, it's best that I don't discover it.

iPads are no longer the novelty they once were. Now that the honeymoon is over it's not surprising that sales are soft. More a gadget than a must have the market is becoming stagnant. No big deal, Apples cash reserve will carry them easily.

My ipad 2 (3.5 yrs old) is still going strong on iOS 6, so probably not. For the few things I use it for, it's hard to see how an upgrade would help - but I'll keep an open mind until I see what apple actually has in store.

He won't have a fit if you give him the Air and buy yourself the new one :p

I do lifestyle tech review as a hobby, he was glad to get me the Air to test iOS apps on, problem is it joins several other really nice tablets. LOL, other women buy shoes I buy tablets.
