if it has enough CPU/GPU upgrade to push the retina display then yes. Otherwise I'll happily buy a cheaper ipad 2 - I didn't feel the need for retina display on my ipad 1, even with magazines etc.

I thought I was going to get an iPad 3, but yesterday I dropped my iPod touch. Will have to wait until it gets or fixed or buy a new iPod...

Is anyone here upgrading their "old" iPad 1 for a feature packed iPad 3 when it comes out next month?
Yes, and I think it was a good choice of me not to buy the iPad 2.

The iPad 2 really was an iPad 1S: the only differences was a new processor, crappy cameras and a new design.

If the iPad 3 rumours are correct, we can expect a real upgrade (compared to the iPad 1):

Certain features (based on what the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 have)
- At least dual core processor, possibly improved (Cortex A15?) dual-core processor, possibly quad-core processor
- 512 (double) or 1 GB (4x as much) of RAM
- Drastically improved graphical power
- Bluetooth 4.0
- GLONASS (3G/4G model)
- New design, thinner and lighter
- No separate CDMA and GSM models
- HE-AAC (Audio) V1 and V2 support (iPad 1 only had V1)
- MP3 bigger support: 8 kbps to 320 kbps instead of 16 kbps to 320 kbps
- Audio, audible extra support: Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+
- 1080p video mirroring
- H264 1080p support (instead of 720p)
- High Profile Level 4.1 (instead of 3.1)

Rumoured and likely features (based on... rumours)
- A display with four times as many pixels, 'retina display'
- LTE might be supported
- Possibly 128 GB model, dumping 16 GB model
- Decent cameras, possibly FaceTime HD
- Siri

Shall I upgrade to the iPad 3 or wait for the iPad 4 or 5?

The problem is there's always something newer and better around the corner.

Got an iPad 1. Will buy a 32 or 64GB iPad 3 when it comes out. In black most likely.

I use my iPad 1 at my university for note taking and it feels really slow. Its about time I get a new one. This one served me well. It shall be given to my dad to replace his terrible android tablet.

True, this is one reason (budget being the bigger one) why I've been on an "every other" cycle thus far.

iPhone 3G -> iPhone 4 and now I've skipped the 4s.

Same will happen with my iPad 1.

Granted, phone upgrades are on an every two year cycle if you want the lower price. Luckily Apple has been on a yearly model cycle for the iPhone thus far.

I too skipped the iPad 2. Like others said, it was just not enough of an update. FaceTime was nice on the 2 but I already had that on my iPhone 4. (I will say that to me the larger screen on the iPad made FaceTime feel more like "being there" with than I feel on my iPhone.)

Alas my iPad 1 getting a bit quirky as more and more apps seem to expect an iPad 2 (apps often just quick while using them). Even just using a news app like Zite will do it.

Edit: After near-confirmation that the iPad 3 is going to be a little larger than the 2 I only hope it doesn't get any heavier too. I feel the iPad 1 is a bit too heavy whereas the 2 just makes it under the threshold of being "too heavy" (for me).

my plan is to upgrade to the new iPad 3, I'm not gonna get a 3G model this time tho i can just tether my iPhone if i need to, but I'm not sure what size to get i have a 32GB atm but i hardly use any of it but 16GB seems just way to small as movie files are huge, i use air video a lot but I'm not always near wifi and so sometimes i do fill it up with movies

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A405 Safari/7534.48.3)

Thanks everyone for the responses! I personally have had both the iPad 1 and iPad 2 and I must say that if the iPad 3 lives up to the hype, it's a worthy upgrade to the original iPad and probably the iPad 2. My wished features include retina display, better rear camera, faster processor, and more ram.

Sold my beloved iPad 1 on fleeBay at the weekend and got £255 for it so going towards iPad 3 for sure. Just hope it blows us all away and the rumours are right. i do hope it has plently of ram aswell. One of main reasons i am upgrading is because i had a jailbroken iPad 1 and could see the memory quick;ly drop and apps would crash.
So hoping that this happens no more and they put more than enough ram in.

Really upset to let my fav gadget go, just hope the 3 comes out real soon :O)

Already got the money saved up and in the bank. I'd love a 128gb iPad, but it's the 1gb of RAM that I'm most looking forward to. The iPad 1's multitasking leaves something to be desired.

I will be upgrading from a 1 to a 3, I am hoping for a bump
to 128gb of storage, as I have filled my 64gb with books and music. Like several others I will forgo the cellular and tether to my IPhone (AT&T data rate sucks in my area).

This is what drives me bonkers about my iPad 1. Skipped the iPad 2 and will definitely be getting a 3 on the day they come out.

I will hopefully be upgrading to the 3 from my 1. I do hope it keeps the smart cover feature from the 2, and I am crossing my fingers for a retina display.

I'll definitely be upgrading to the iPad 3...my iPad 1 is ok but iOS 5 is really pushing it to the limit in terms of memory usage.

Probably!
This does depend on exactly what's "new and improved" about the iPad 3, but for me the biggest thing will be a retina display. Having a sharp display with no (or at least very little) readily visible pixelation will be amazing! Other possible features are not too important for me. More storage would be great, but I doubt we'll be seeing that. The faster speed would be handy too though, as well as better graphics (for 3d games, and general performance issues). I wonder if better performance from newer hardware might reduce how often my iPad crashes... I think that's largely from ios 5 though :/

So anyway, if it has a retina display, I'm in! :)

I will be for sure! I am in the process of selling mine and planting the seeds ready to convince the wife :D lets just hope it will be available on the 7th March and not just the announcement!

I use my iPad as a replacement for my laptop. I bring it to class, write papers on it, take all my notes on it, read my books on it for my english classes. It is getting a little sluggish, but still works perfectly well. Depending on the specs of the new one and if I can get money for this one, an upgrade would definitely be in my interest.

I will likely be upgrading, the key point for me will be if LTE is supported or not (and if I can keep my unlimited data through AT&T).

Dropping the 16GB and having a 32 GB (3G or LTE) model come in around $630 would be huge for me. My current iPad 1 is 64GB but with iCloud matching, I no longer need to keep my entire music collection. 32GB is plenty for movies and apps.

i'm going to wait and see what its got, and then try and weigh up whether its worth it. i'm keen on keeping the iPad 1, just so i can look back in ten years and remember what apple's first tablet was like, try and keep it in good condition and really look after it :)

i'm not keen on splashing out the £700 or so thats needed to get a higher capacity model, but things i'll need to see if there's a chance of upgrading are:

2048x1536 'retina' display
1GB of RAM
same 10 hour battery
same weight as the iPad 2

I'd also love a 128GB option, but i'm becoming more and more doubtful that we'll see that. fingers crossed though!
It'll certainly be tempting if its got the list above. excited for the keynote :)
