I have been holding off buying a Mac Mini for my home office until the monitor I wanted became available. The monitor has been backordered for awhile and, according to the company rep, it should be available mid-November or very soon. I was going to get a fully loaded Mac Mini -- prior to today -- and it was going to cost me $2,999 USD. I was about a week away from ordering everything.

When they announced the Mac Mini at the event today I immediately purchased a fully-loaded one with 16GB Memory, 2TB HDD, and saved a bunch of money. I would have preferred a Mini with more memory than 16GB but, for what I really do on a day-to-day basis, this M1 version should be just fine.

I bought a very basic Mac Mini a couple of months ago with (8GB memory, 512 GB HDD, no upgrades) for my business and it has been working great. Based on its performance, I was keen on getting another Mac Mini. The announcement today was just perfect timing for me.

That said I feel like they are saving space grey for a Mac Mini Pro with an M1X chip

Yup, I expect so. All of the devices released today should be seen very much as entry-level devices, there is a lot more to come. But even for entry-level, with unified RAM and everything else they are going to be good. That said, I know I will be upgrading again sooner rather than later :)

But I wanted to get in on the ground floor and know what I am dealing with.

To be fair though, it will be easier to sell a Mac Mini with an M1 in a couple of years should you need to upgrade than it will be for all the people with intel Mac Minis. Once AS is embedded the market will be awash with Apple devices with intel chips nobody but the minority wants.

Also, consider there will be a market in years to come for the 'vintage' devices with the 1st ever ARM chip Apple offered :)
You don't know if the intel will hold value due to 64gb ram vs 16gb ram in these units. Also the intel may allow a few programs to run that the arm does not. So it could turn out that a 32gb or 64 gb 2018/2020 with a 1tb ssd holds value.

I am not sure if I will get one. I will wait for first wave then decide> I would like a 16gb 1tb model but not sure if I really need the 16gb.

I bit the bullet today and bought the new Arm Mac Mini - 16gb ram, 256 ssd. Used a military discount and the trade-in option so the final cost will end up being less than $200 which was cheaper than the upgrades I had planned for the current mini.

Wonder if these new macs support the cisco anyconnect
Should be able to through Rosetta, until Cisco supports it natively, which shouldn’t be an issue. Worse case you can just download the iOS variant from the App Store on your Mac mini and connect via VPN that way.

I toyed with the idea since Apple extended the purchase return window to early January 2021 but ultimately I decided against it.

My hesitation wasn't the hardware (which won't change for presumably a year) but software.

Based on what I've seen from Crapalina, user anecdotes about Big Sur, and the newness of this OS from a third-party application perspective, buying an M1-powered Mac mini doesn't seem to be in my best interest.

More than anything else, it appears to be a big time sink waiting for Apple to optimize their OS and for third-party developers to get their **** together.

I would rather wait six month and wait for the software to catch up than to beat my head against a brick wall by being an early adopter next week.

I realize that Apple would prefer me to be "all in" for Apple Silicon but based on what I have seen with iOS 13, macOS Crapalina, and other B.S. over the past two years, I'm perfectly happy to sit on the sidelines.

TRUST IS EARNED. Apple squandered whatever they had with me a couple of years ago. And don't get me started on the Mojave Security Update 2020-005 snafu and all of those B.S. iBridge crash reports.

I ordered the base model with 16gb. I have a 512gb T4 that I plan to supplement. 24-27 is the estimate.

I was close to going through with the same 16/512 spec as the OP, but ended up going with a 16/512 Air (7-core GPU) for $220 more (Edu Store). I know the mini will perform better given the active cooling, and oh my gosh ports!, but just couldn't resist the convenience of a portable M1 Mac. …Though researching Thunderbolt docks for dual external monitors has me rethinking my decision. 😛

I'm really curious to learn about the real-world performance difference between the M1 implementation in these three machines once they're out in the wild. Exciting times to be a Mac user!

Hi, I'm ordering the new Mac Mini, and also have in mind buying the 49" Dell monitor U4919DW, I asked the sales rep it would work with the mini and she said that connecting them with the Direct port would do it, but she also said to ask in any Mac forum for assurance. So my question is it will work? Thanks.

I have been using an iPad Pro as my main device but this period has really got my using a computer again which in my case is MacBook Air mid 2011. I ordered the mini with 16gb. Pretty sure it’s going to be a huge update compared to what I have right now

I think I will wait for the next refresh which will hopefully not be a MacBook Air in a Mac Mini chassis.

It won't be, the next Mini will be the upgraded MBP in a MM chassis. But at a significantly higher price point. What they are offering today for those that don't want/need a laptop or iMac to perform at the highest level will be fine for the majority.

Dell have DisplayPort and HDMI 2.0 so I don't see any reason why it would not work on the new Mac Mini.

I was waiting for the ARM mini to replace my iMac for music production but I’m not convinced to do the jump. I think that I will wait to see some benchmarks next week to decide. It will be way better than my 12yo mac anyways... but if the performance is not good I will wait for them to add the M2 option, I want this machine to last.
You could wait one more year. I think performance will be great, but I think for music production the option to have 32GB will be better. It is still to be seen, though, if the mini will ever get more than 16g RAM. I hope so. But I also think the M1 might be around for at least two years before an update. Maybe there will be a M1X late next year with modest improvements for the lower end Macs. If you look how long A series processors stick around in iPads, the next mini update might even only come early 2022.

I don't understand why you aren't convinced? You can do music production with 2008 iMac and iPad Pro but you keep wondering can you do music production with new 2020 ARM mini what is faster than your mind. Only thing you need to check is that music softwares and plugins etc you are using are compatible with new ARM mini.

I'm waiting to see some real world test in FCP... how it will run and if it can handle 4K video from A7RIII, Mini2 and Pocket without using proxy, low quality etc (this is why I bought an eGPU).

Then I can buy one (despite 2 less thunderbolt3 ports).

I'm tempted to buy the Mac Mini to hook up to my 4K monitor (at the moment I'm hooking up my Macbook) for a proper desk setup. I like the idea of having a 16gb / 512gb setup, but like many people are saying I suspect that a space grey / M1X / 4 x TB model is coming next year, which is the computer I really want. They're probably going to have the philosophy of the entry-level Mac Mini being the guts of the entry-level 13" Macbook Pro, and the Mac Mini Pro being the guts of the higher-level 13" Macbook Pro.

The initial outlay of either setup isn't an issue, I'm just looking at it from a standpoint of the amount I'll lose if I sell it on next year or the year after. I figure that selling on the base Mac Mini will give the least loss, because I'd probably be able to get 600 back for it, with the way that Mac Minis sell on the used market.

Just curious what and how did you do the trade in? I have been thinking to dump my iPad Pro so I wonder if I can go into the store and just trade it in and get gift card for it?

I also bite the bullet and pick up the new Mac mini. I recently built a new pc to join some friends with some game development that we are trying. The only reason for the pc was that I can develop with unity and then compile and run the game. But boy oh boy I can’t stand windows...it’s just so terrible to use. I have until the end of Jan to return all my pc parts. So I figured I would pick up the new Mac mini and try to see if it will work with unity and see how powerul it is. I have also been waiting to return to Mac with my newest Mac being the MacBook Pro 13 from 2011. My won’t be here until early December but I’m hoping I can get it sooner and try it out. I got the 16gb/512. Really excited to see how it goes. This is my first new Mac in a very very long time. Will probably eventually pick up a laptop but we will see.

I bought one with 16gb 1tb and then I'll just buy the version 2 when it comes out. It's replacing a 2018 mini thats going to replace the one in my office at work. I'm using a LG 31MU97 4096x2160 but I might look for a new monitor its like 6 years old... any suggestions?
