Who still wears a normal watch?

Apple Watch of any version, or just a normal watch?

The wife bought me a Suunto Vector for my birthday in 2007, and I’ve worn it literally every day since. In addition to keeping fine time, it has a compass, barometer, thermometer, and altimeter. It’s been across the world and abused over and over again without issue.

I’ve considered the convenience of an Apple Watch, but just think it would get scratched or broken too easily.

That is a Finnish brand, if I am not mistaken.

I agree on the Auto watches. There are certain brands that simply hold their value. This will not change any time soon. I bought a Rolex about 4-5 yrs ago. It was a great deal at 8500 at the time (got a discount). The current retail price on it has actually increased since I bought. I could easily sell this watch used for what I bought it for, if not more.

Nope! The honeymoon is over for auto/mechanical watches, they had their peak time in the 70s and 80s

Well said, and I agree with you that the high end (and medium end) brands will hold their value.

In the old ages our watches were the only personal gadgets we've had. These days there are phones and smart watches, if people start paying and receiving calls with their watches.....well why would you bother with the 120 years old technology?!?!?

I have 2 citizen eco drive watches. One watch my dad gave me when I turned 30. And the other citizen was when I got my first job that paid $$$. I still wear them they never go out of style and they look classic. I’d rather buy watches to commemorate important events in my life then an Apple Watch that stops working when the battery runs out and your are SOL. I’m going to have these nice watches 20 year from now but my Apple Watch... it’ll probably be recycled and broke up into 1000 pieces.

Oh I love that design. I’m a citizen fan. I only buy this brand.
Yeah I like all different brands - my dream watch is a Breitling and I really want the citizen blue angel! Love that design and the colors look so so good

Everyone has a reason and taste. I have both but to me a watch has value and it last. Like my 8 yr old citizen that my dad gave me when I turned 30. That has way more sentimental value to me than my iPhone XS Max or my iPad Pro, MacBook Pro or my Apple Watch. These Apple products are probably worth more than $3500 but which one will I have 20 yrs from now? I’ll still have the black citizen watch he gave me. I doubt I have any of these Apple products.

A regular “expensive” watch is also a fashion piece to some of us. I know the Apple Watch can be that too but we have our own taste.

And watches are timeless (pun intended). The gen 1 14karat Apple Watch is next to useless these days and will become obsolete.

Plus I work in a field where I don’t want to be distracted all the time. A phone is distracting enough. I don’t need my watch to add to that.

In your view, a watch is a gadget. I agree only in the case with smart watches. The purpose of the smart watch is quite different. It's an electronic extension of your phone. However like any other electronic, it becomes obsolete over time.

The watches I am referring to are known as time pieces. They are not a gadget/electronic device. They won't go obsolete. They can be repaired/serviced to function like new. How they are viewed, quality, purpose, etc... is quite different. Most view high end watches like jewelry.

Comparing a smart watch to a time piece is not apples to apples.

I don't wear watches.....

Just a set back for not looking at a smart phone for the time. For others, legit reason, diving watches or jewelry etc.

The biggest con of the smart watches is there are only 2 or 3 different types from each company so everyone wears the same watch : (

Where as with the regular you have thousands to choose from so yeah fashion wise, elegance and style i guess the regular watches win. You and rottenapple above made a good point.

Exactly.

And the technology for the exquisite craftsmanship that makes proper (precise) chronometers goes back to the eighteenth century, not 120 years, as one poster seems to have assumed.

These are beautiful elegant timepieces, exquisitely made, and - timeless.

Already, I have had my Omega for a decade - and had been eyeing it fro at least three years before that time.

No smart watch will give a decade's classic and aimless elegance, let alone pleasure on the wrist.

They are simply passing fashionable fads, whereas classic timepieces are timeless, and will never be obsolete.

Of course you aren’t.

A Finnish colleague with whom I worked abroad wore one, if memory serves.

I can’t see myself spending 8k on a Rolex though. I’d be afraid to wear it. I like my $300-$500. I’m crossing into an important time in my career and I would love to buy an expensive citizen to commemorate this period.

Would love an Apple Watch but I’ve cracked too many screens on normal watches to make me wary of dropping NZD$400+ on one.

For feautures and usability smart watches win and for fashion and elegance regular watches so i guess its good to have one of each and update them whenever it suites you.

Some reputable sites (or companies) - including a number of authorised dealers - offer used Rolexes and Omegas, - as people trade in and trade up - and other "high ned" brand names for sometimes pretty reasonable prices (such as half, or two thirds of what that watch would have retained for, when new).

You can get Rolex's for around 4-5k starting. The model I wanted just happens to be much more. I bought it as a personal achievement when I hit a financial number. I won't be rewarding myself again until I reach my next goal. And I've already been eyeing the next one lol.

In terms of wearing it, I have it insured for about 60 a year. Covers all damages including loss/theft. I had to send in receipts/appraisal documents. I'm good minus a 500 deductible. Considering the yearly insurance premium vs what I paid, I don't worry.

I couldn't either, which i why i got a copycat from China.. (....till it fell apart few months later)

IMO, there's nothing really fashionable about a smart watch.

My brother owns a Rolex "Batman", and not surprisingly there is still a wait line for it AND the price has gone up.

I currently own an Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean 2500C movement and a Nomos Minimatik. Right now the Planet Ocean gets my daily wrist time since I just swapped the steel bands to the official Omega NATO strap.

I know some people are worried about "damaging" their expensive watches, but part of it is battle wear and tear. These are watches that will last with you for the rest of your life and generations beyond.

Wearing a Rolex GMT Master II. What up until stops me from purchasing an Apple Watch is basically the battery. I cannot accept if (battery) performance of a Watch decreases over time. For me this is not comparable to a phone being replaced after two or three years. Even though I pretty much like the Hermes Edition.

The market for mechanical watches is so incredibly weak right now that there have been 3 record prices set in their respective categories(American pocket watches, English pocket watches, vintage dive watches) in 2019.

Those record prices just prove how badly the smart watch has gutted the market for "traditional" watches.
