My take: The first folks to get it are either large (Premier) Apple shops or p2p downloaders. Then ADC Select members, hopefully. Then on-line orders that are delivered a day or two early. Next, the majority of on-line orders, followed closely (same day) by retail purchases. Finally, those few unlucky on-line orders that experience screwed up delivery, for one reason or another.

Isn't it sad that p2p downloaders get Tiger before paying ADC Select members? Makes you wonder if you're not a fool for paying for your membership, since the p2p folks get everything first, anyway. Apple has been withhold seeds from paying ADC members to try to control the p2p activity, but in the end the p2p folks get theirs, while the honest ADC members have the value of their memberships diluted and wait.

Kinda makes you wish that they required special unlock software for any OS that is not yet released. Just as long as it DOES NOT end up in production.

I understand the pain the ADC members are going through. I will soon be an ADC member, I am just trying to get my employer to pay for it :)

I'm surprised that nobody's asked me already! Yeah, it's 8A428, the same as the gold master. After all, that's what a gold master is, it's the final CD that gets duplicated for the retail release (ie. the retail boxes contain copies of the gold master).

On a side note, I believe that the so-called 'gold masters' are actually made from glass these days, and I don't think they contain any gold anymore.

I'm actually between macs right now as I had to sell mine to get money thanks to car issues. Is it just me, or is the text more crisp and clear in Tiger? I remember that was the one thing that bothered me about Panther. The text was either kinda blurry or too jagged if you turned of the text smoothing. From the screen shots the text in Tiger looks beautiful. Has anyone else noticed this? :)

thanks for the quick reply Nermal.

do you find it annoying that you have to access a hot key to use dashboard? i wish apple had implemented widgets like konfabulator, you know having direct access to widgets on the desktop.

how are the new screen savers? are there any good ones?

You mean like apps such as calculator and address book?

Personally I would like to see pictures of the people holding their tiger retail box, DVD, and documentation. Not saying that I don't trust that you got it legitimately, but with Tiger GM on p2p sites, I would like to see proof that you have a real copy.

I haven't noticed any difference at all. I used to run Panther with smoothing set to Medium. There is now an Automatic option, which is what I have Tiger set to. I'm using a 17" DVI LCD if it makes any difference.

That's because I'm procrastinating ;) (supposed to be making a website)

I haven't used Konfabulator so I can't really comment, but you can put a Dashboard icon in the Dock which makes your widgets appear. But using the keyboard doesn't annoy me, it's F12 by default (I've changed it to F13 because F12 conflicts with Dreamweaver).

I've never been much of a fan of screen savers, so this is the first time I've been into that pane.

The old Computer Name, Flurry, Abstract and Beach are still there. We also have Cosmos, Forest, iTunes Artwork, Nature Patterns and Paper Shadow, along with RSS Visualiser and Spectrum. Some of those may have been in Panther too, I've never really noticed them though. The RSS one by default shows you the Apple Hot News, curving around the screen, it's quite neat :) (it's a bit like that iTunes ad from a while ago where the artist names zoom up and down and around)

yeah i know that calc and address book are separate stand alone apps apart from the respective widgets that you can access on the desktop. i find it kind of silly that you have to press a key tp get to the dashboard widgets. Having to switch back and forth between widget mode and regular desktop is kind of annoying. i think konfabulator's implementation is better because it's widgets can be accessed directly without toggling.

what does the new ichat look like? i heard u can do profiles now? How does that setup look like? What are the options?

My camera's not very good, but why don't you read about the new Safari? :)

I don't have a video camera (or even a microphone) so I only use iChat for text chat, and haven't noticed any difference, except that Rendezvous is now called Bonjour. There might be new stuff in the audio and video sections though.

not to be a pest, but does iChat now support nicknames from your address book?

good god, does the apple menu icon look different...maybe that's just the compression for posting here but it looks very flat and like it's lost its "reflectiveness."
i prolly wont order for awhile unless me and 4 friends decide to go in on a family pack or something
edit: nermal, what vid card do you have and is your machine a dual proc?

I believe that is the way the Apple logo is now...to match the Spotlight icon.

You can see it looks that way in the screenshots on Apple's site.

10 Days early is unbelievable. That's so cool. Not sure if I want to upgrade now straight away. Maybe I'll wait until 10.4.1 or 2?

Who knows... It'll probably end up being a case of "when i've got enough money"

What's the difference between a normal install and a "clean" install? Will I have to reinstall all my programs?

Needs a new serial, the ones from QT6 won't work. :(

I don't have any H.264 files to try, although the pictures in the manual look quite crisp. Also in the manual is a Movie Recording box, which it says is used to capture video from an iSight or other FW camera.

As you can see, a lot of features are only available in Pro:

Edit: There are two Help menus! BUG!

You gotta be kidding me... Apple's still charging for the "luxury" of full screen in QT? Seriously, even WMP will play at full screen for no charge.

Awsome, enjoy Nermal. Thats weird how there's no presence in NZ down in Australia (atleast major cities) there are plenty of store. Ive got two stores near me, one a 5min walk the other a 20min walk.

Yeah, it's amazing to not have fullscreen support. QT7 seems really limited because I've had 6 Pro for years. Lacero seems to have 7 Pro but I don't know how he got it - when you click Buy QuickTime it takes you to a page where you can buy 6

A normal or upgrade install keeps your existing settings etc and brings the underlying files up to the latest version. A clean install essentially starts from scratch.

Judging by the comments in this thread, a clean install results in a more stable and less buggy system, but will require you to reinstall everything.

We do have stores, but they're not run by Apple. There's no Apple NZ, all we have are resellers. Australia on the other hand has Apple Australia, with the online Apple Store etc.

There are three types of installs you can do:

1. Upgrade: Essentially, it just replaces the Panther system files with Tiger system files. All your programs, files, music, preferences, accounts, etc remain the same.

2. Archive and Install: Takes your "Home" folder, saves it, and then installs Tiger. You'll have to drag files you want to use out of the archived folder and put them in the new Tiger Home folder.

3. Clean Install: Formats your hard drive and installs Tiger. Like taking the computer out of the box. You'd have to reinstall any premium software and things you installed after you got your computer (Quicken, MS Office, iLife, except iTunes, etc).

(If I explained any of that wrong, please correct me)

WHAT DOES SHERLOCK LOOK LIKE? IS IT STILL IN THERE? TAKE A PIC OF IT IF U CAN! sorry.. just had to

DON'T PANIC!

I don't use Sherlock, but my Sherlock.app is dated 2003 so presumably hasn't been updated in Tiger.
