The best place to get it would probably be from the Dell site. I don't think they sell them through third parties. You would actually probably get a better deal from the Dell site over eBay because if you find the right coupon codes (they have them almost all the time) you can get one for much cheaper than a new one on eBay.

Comparing the two, a reliable eBay seller is £454 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=41808&item=5161252568&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) and Dell £473 (http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sn...y_id=5194&first=true&page=productlisting.aspx)...are there any more discounts applicable to the Dell price?

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2005--Dell (NASDAQELL - News), the worldwide leader in LCD monitor shipments(a), is giving customers an expanded multimedia experience with the introduction of its largest and most fully-featured flat panel display.

The UltraSharp(TM) 2405FPW will be on sale for $1,199 in the Americas and Europe on March 1, 2005. The wide-screen monitor is ideal for graphics professionals, computing enthusiasts and gamers. The native resolution of 1920x1200(b) helps ensure detailed images are crisp and clear and typical response times of 12ms(c) mean fast-moving content is displayed with minimal distortion.

The 24-inch display makes it easier and more affordable for customers to multitask by viewing spreadsheets and blueprints in their full sizes and positioning multiple applications or Web pages next to each other without losing content. It also reduces the need to scroll within large documents and toggle between application windows.

The 2405FPW includes a 9-in-1 memory card reader on the side of the panel for a convenient way to download files and photos. Picture-in-picture (PIP) and picture-by-picture (PBP) modes(d), which can be enabled with the touch of a button, allow users to watch content from a video input and view their PC simultaneously, on a single display.

The 2405FPW features a height-adjustable stand, allowing the panel to swivel, tilt and pivot into portrait orientation. Its optional sound bar, which attaches to the bottom of the panel, is as space-saving as it is powerful, delivering 14 watts of audio output.

Technical specifications of the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW include:

thats not a dual link dvi card, it just has two dvi ports

Ah, wasn't aware of that. Good to know that there is a difference. Gives me something to research.

12ms refresh, 1000:1 contrast, this is a hell of a monitor for the price. I was trying to cool my tech jets this year but if I see one of those amazing Dell coupon codes flying around in March I might break down...

hmm, with discounts, do you guys think this'll go into the $900 range or lower? that'll finalize a purchase for me

I wonder why so many people at that PC forum was so obsessed with with pointing out that Dell > Apple?

Anyway, it's probably a nice monitor and a better buy for an average consumer than the Apple monitors. It's probably not SWOP certified and does not give the same guarantee on color correctness as Apple's displays, however.

That said, I wouldn't mind if Apple announced some consumer class 17" and 20" monitors so that I could get a monitor that matches my Mac mini.

i thought i would resize it, it looks quite nice

i have to say, those 20inch apple displays are looking less and less attractive,

i wonder how much they will be in the uk

Ok.

This monitor is quite tasty and im wondering if a Radeon 8500 64MB can create a high res widescreen image.

My PC (Sorry, G5 Mac mid 2006 hopefully) only shows a few resolutions because its connected to my old 15 Packard Bell CRT.

whoa! that's a pci, not pci-e graphics card!

Well it seem's that they must put a lot of power into that card but still don't know how that can run the 30"

Ouch! That even makes getting a 23" Apple LCD questionable. My only hope is that it forces Apple to lower their LCD prices....

Thats one nice display.

I have a 2005FPW (20 inch widescreen) which is impressive in appearance and build quality (heck, I liked it so much considering the $$$ that I bought a second one for a family member). Unlike the Apple, it's not surrounded by aluminum, but the plastics are solid, sturdy and well assembled. It may be inexpensive but it's not cheap. Many of the retail LCD monitors (you know, the ones that sit on Best Buy and CompUSA shelves) have really shoddy build quality. The 24-inch model looks really well put together and the LCD specs are pretty yummy, with a 9-in-1 card reader thrown in for good measure. Let the chips fall.

Apple must be hating this - their rationalization to make their LCDs grossly overpriced has crumbled into dust.

I really wouldn't mind buying the 24", and using it as a computer display and a TV. Should be easy enough - buy it, buy a cheap VCR player, hook it up through S-Video, and bam. TV.

And I will voucher for the build quality - if the 17" displays are any indication. My school has those UltraSharp 17" displays, and the build quality is indeed top-notch. Solid and doesn't feel cheap. My Samsung 172T on the other hand, while looking good and the panel itself is great, the build quality is cheap-feeling. If you squeeze the bezel, it creaks. Cheapo. :)

EDIT: I'm tired. Misspelling galore.

Geez... if I didn't already have my Sony 23" LCD (SDM-P234, $1619.00 from CDW), and if I hadn't already gotten rid of all of my Dell gear (transition from Dellboy to Sonyboy), I would SERIOUSLY consider this display. The price is unbeatable and the size of the screen is sure to impress.

I'm trying to time the purchase of a new 23 or 30 display and a new system this year while taking into account all of the new items we hope will be released. Now I'm as big an apple snob as the next person, but this new dell is making it extremely hard to justify a $800 premium for the apple product. I keep adding that cash to extras on a new powerbook and can't find any logical reason to buy the apple display.

If only someone would come out with a $100 kit to match the look of the dell display to a mac...

This thing connect up to everything at a cost of only 1160. Do I see a price drop coming from apple. I'm not interested in this beast or apple's 23". But I am eyeing a 20" apple LCD.
