Only the richest of the rich buy something like a $1,300 computer before playing with one first.

It's more a matter of trust and convenience. I trust that Apple will have produced a device that works well for me. I think I'd even be ok with ordering it now before any of the reviews came out.

It's also very convenient to just order it and have it show up at my door. Making a trip to the mall is time I don't want to give up in my busy life.

I always have the 15 day return policy timeframe as a backup plan.

And, about being rich: I am rich but that is relative. Most wouldn't consider me rich but I have a good job that pays me well and a wonderful family. That is where I'm really rich.

An in-store trial might help you to detect a massive problem, but there is enough new here - keyboard size, keyboard stroke, hinge-free touchpad, for example - that I don't think it'd really prove a lot. "Playing with it" is about all you could realistically do in the store. Once you get past that point, there's no reason not to buy it and return it if it's a dud for you.

No, lots of people will buy one anyway, many won't use them much, many will buy on credit. Now if you were talking about a $17000 watch you'd be closer, but still only "rich", not richest of them.

Why is there so much hate for people who spend $1300 on a nice laptop?

I remember I spend $6300 on my first laptop...and, that was way back in 1996!

I know. I don't get it. Decades ago, computers cost much more and did less, when the dollar was deflated compared to now.

In 1984, the 128mb Mac cost $2495. That'd be like buying a basic iMac today for $5600. But today's top-of-the-line iMac with a 27inch, 5K display costs less than half that. In 2008, the first MacBook Air was released for $1799 - nearly $2000 in today's dollars. But we're complaining about a much more capable MacBook which costs $1300 at first generation?

...and by the way, let's remember that the original MBA 13" had a whopping 80gb spinner, 2gb of RAM, was very controversial because it ditched the optical drive, and cost (IIRC) $1900 (maybe it was $1800? - a whole lot more than the rMB).

II bought one, and loved it. It did get awfully hot though. :)

I don't usually shy away from spending a good deal of money on new technology. They are my toys. I didn't buy the SSD version as it was too expensive of an option

I still have my Rev A MBA. I don't use it any more. It sure is a tank! At the time it seemed so thin.

You're reminding me. I'm gonna ditch this idea and hunt down a mint 701c Thinkpad. Man was that a great machine (back around the same time). I don't remember what it cost - might have been close to that. What a keyboard!

Was that the one that had the expandable keyboard?

They will be back some day. I see laptop screens eventually becoming 'rolled up' such that they could be stored (unwrapped when they were to be used). Then we'll need the expandable keyboard again.

I still have my $6300 Tecra 720CDT at work. It still works! It was the first laptop with a color 1024 x 768 TFT screen. It was amazing back then.

I'm going to check it out in the stores before even thinking about purchasing it. But if I do you bet I am going to smell the laptop once I open it out of the box just like smelling the "new car smell" LOL! :p

Talking about keyboards my old x31 by far was the best thing to type on!!!

Yes, the butterfly keyboard and a few other then-cool tech innovations.

Would anyone order it before there were any reviews?

When will we see Apple begin advertising it on TV?

I wish I could order already before the ads or reviews.

I think we will start seeing reviews at least a few days before sales and orders open on the 10th, but to answer your question, assuming I decide I'm really gong to buy one, yes, I would buy it before seeing reviews, in part because I've read enough to think that it's at least not a dud and in part because the return policy gives me 14 days of complete peace of mind.

I'm looking forward to the advertisements. They will almost certainly do a good job of showing off the thin form factor. The machines are so gorgeous I think they will be an immediate hit.

(I don't see people lining up to buy one opening day, though... It isn't an iPhone or an Apple Watch.)

I'm almost certainly buying one, but I'm going to wait a week for some reviews to come out. Also, I hope by then, some comparisons of the 1.1 vs 1.3GHz is available. I doubt there's much difference, but since I plan on keeping this guy around for a while, I want to future proof it just a little bit.

If they up the BTO price more than $150, no way I'm paying more than that. I would have a hard time swallowing $150. I would prefer no more than $100 upgrade for such a tiny jump in specs.

Also, I want to go into the store and see it in person to make sure the screen size is adequate. But i'm giddy with anticipation!

I think the reviews should be out before the 10th. I kind of thought we might be seeing them already, just one week away. I look forward to seeing benchmark scores that don't disappear! :)

And far more importantly, don't appear, and then disappear, on April Fools' Day.

Exactly! I want a real review with other benchmarks, too. I'm curious to see what the GPU benchmarkds are. I wonder if the benchmark shown earlier was real. I expected 2200 to 2400, not something under 2000.

(Although I think I'm purchasing one even if there are no review by April 10)

I wasn't going to, but after thinking about it, I will. I'll get the 1.1 base model to try out for a while and see how it works for me. If it doesn't, then I'll return it and I'll either buy a BTO one (at B&H this time :p) or a new MBA, depending on what exactly I don't like.

The only 100% sure thing is, I'm upgrading my MBA.

Why would you buy a BTO at B&H? Personally, I'm ordering the 1.3Ghz/512GB as soon as orders go up. No hesitation at all.

Me too!

Are you getting up right at midnight to see if the online store is up?
