I am definitely buying a new laptop on the 10th - I am just not sure if it will be the rMB or the Air 13". My only hesitation in the try after buy is that I want to install Office on it and was told my product key can only be installed once. If that is the case, I want to buy one and stick with it. I am 50/50 between the two of them and want to try the rMB out in the store before committing. That being said, i am dreading the craziness of the store on the 10th due to the watch. I really wish those dates hadn't coincided.

Why would you buy a BTO at B&H? Personally, I'm ordering the 1.3Ghz/512GB as soon as orders go up. No hesitation at all.

Because I'm not convinced I'll need the faster CPU so I want to give the cheaper one a chance first. If it turns out I like it but it's too slow, then I'll upgrade. In this case, buying it at B&H will save me the sales tax, and I'll already know I like it so their no-returns policy won't be a problem anymore.

If the base model is good enough for me, I will have saved money by not buying a higher CPU that I don't need. Might even return it and order the same at B&H and save even more.

Get the Office 2015 preview for free and use that for testing. And then keep it because it's seriously incredibly better than Office 2011 for Mac (at least Excel and Word).

Edit - see below. Apparently a case of selective memory or EOSD.

A note on the size of the new rMB. As some of you may remember, I recently tried to bond with an 11" MBA, which didn't work out because I couldn't resign myself to the display. I really liked the portability of the 11" MBA, although with its huge bezels it actually wasn't hugely smaller than my 13" rMBP.

So, I was looking at the SFBags case that arrived yesterday and although it took a while for the light bulb to go on, it finally dawned on me how much smaller the footprint of the rMB is than the 13" rMBP. Those of us looking for a more compact, portable notebook are probably going to be amazed when we get our hands on these things.

The rMB footprint is roughly the same as the 11" MBA.

I didn't compare the specs (will do so now out of curiosity). It definitely seemed smaller, case to case as an analogue to the machines. I may be suffering selective memory or something like that. ;)

OK, edit - you're totally right. One is a little wider, the other a little "deeper" front to back.

11" MBA: 11.8 x 7.5
rMB: 11.0 x 7.75

Which should be interesting for me. I'll have gone 11" MBA > 13" rMBP > 12" rMB. I thought the 11" Air was too small half the time, but a slightly bigger display and a Retina screen should fix that for me.

You're probably right. I'm sure it'll be even smaller than what we were expecting.

absolutely not. One of the silliest products since the macbook air.
No fans? Who are they kidding? Their products already get dangerously hot... hot enough to fry logic boards enough to keep my Mac repair business alive.

No dedicated graphics processor trying to run a retina screen?

Really just shocked at how many basic design flaws, especially after the garbage product the macbook air line has been. Those sort-of-mSata soldered-on SDDs fail incredibly often

I'm glad they keep selling these entry-level idiot products to morons willing to buy them though, because when the components inevitably fail, I get a good amount of business

The retina screen maybe, but the display is only moderately larger 11.6 vs 12". Because of the screen quality , you can have more real estate on your screen even if what your looking at will be smaller. Also, though I may be wrong, the 11" MBA screen is longer (or maybe as long as the 12") but the 12" screen is taller, so it might not affect doing side by side windows.

So much inaccuracy in one post.

So we'll take that as standup comedy. Don't quit the day job, though.

Yeah, that's the only thing I am worried about. If it will be visualy smaller then my last 13inc rMBP

I suspect it may be difficult to adjust to the new keuboard.

At first, when they introduced the new keuboard during the keynote, I was excited about the bigger keys. After thinking about it more, I started to wonder if the lack of space between the keys might make touch typing MORE difficult.

One thing is for certain, though, I'm sure I can get used to it and get good at it. I will use it 8+ hours per day at work and then probably a few more hours at home too. I will become an expert either way!

Most of the mistakes with the new keyboard will be hitting a u instead of y.

Of course it will be. 13.3 vs 12 inch. A 12 inch display is tiny. Better have really good eyes if you read a lot of text on your laptop.

I'm lining up Friday morning to pick one up at my nearest Apple Store (Arrowhead Mall Apple Store) and the first time I try it out will probably be while they are going to get it from the back.

Until I get some real time with it... more than just a few minutes in the store, I wont know whether I really like it or not. I'm sure there will be a bit of adjustment with the keyboard and maybe the trackpad. But only spending time actually typing & writing on it will tell. We've got a couple weeks to return it, so I will definitely give it a few days to really decide if I like it.

You are aware that using the native resolution, text will be larger than on the 11" MBA aren't you? it will also be nicer to read due to the retina display.

To each his own. I'd much rather save the 1.5 pound weight.

Do you buy a car without a test drive? How about ordering chinese food without a sample? Marry your wife without ever "testing driving" her first?

I'm going to molest the hell outta that new rMP before apple will ever see $1299 from me. You bet it's gonna get an investigation more thorough than Tim Cook booting out Scott Forstall for all his inside anti-gay jokes.

1. Do you buy a car without a test drive? No, however it's not a good comparison since a car is in a different league - $70K vs $1600.

2. How about ordering chinese food without a sample? Yes - always! But again, a different league - $12 vs $1600

3. Marry your wife without ever "testing driving" her first? No, because there is no return policy! :)

A MacBook is an evolution of Apple products that I have a lot of experience with, so I can judge the outcome of my actions pretty well. Of course, you can't judge my actions or others since you don't know us. I think it's pretty reasonable for people to test a MacBook before buying, but I don't need to. Besides, it's not a lifelong commitment (like a wife!) - I will replace it with something shinier soon enough!

Only the richest of the rich buy something like a $1,300 computer before playing with one first.

I didn't realize I am so rich - don't tell the IRS or my wife! ;)
