We are both getting the maxed out versions. Space gray (I think) for me. Gold for her.

So, are you ordering the maxed out BTO version (1.3GHz) or are you getting the maxed out normal version (1.2GHz)?

(I think they might not have the 1.3GHz version in the store)

I read a ton of text on my iPad's 9.7" screen and manage just fine.

You hold an iPad much closer to you then you would a laptop, not a good comparison. One is a hand held device, one is not. Here is the difference between 11.6 and 13.3, the extra .4 inches of the Macbook is negligible. Thats a pretty big difference in screen real estate when looking at them side by side. .

16:10 on the 12" rMB. That makes a big difference.

About 0.6" is gained over the 11.6" MBA in the vertical ('y') dimension. Vertually nothing is gained in the horizontal dimension.

The screen size is probably my only worry, but even then it's not a big deal. I won't not get the rMB because of that. I'm used to 13.3" screens, and I owned the 11-inch Air at one point...which I thought was too small half the time. But with the Retina display and the ability to scale resolutions as well as 16:10, I'm sure I'll be OK.

I am afraid you will find the screen size to be disappointingly small. But, if you look at it as a sacrifice for the portability and it is not your main machine, you should be able to get by. You seem pretty open minded and flexible so I'm sure you will appreciate the advantages.

It will be my only computer but I'm quite use to the 11.6" MBA so I know I will be all right.

It will be my only machine. If it ends up being a HUGE deal, then I'll return it. But I don't see that being the case. I have always used a 13-inch laptop as my main machine for the most part. I don't see going down to a 12-inch screen as a big jump. I used the 11-inch Air as my only machine for 2 years.

Well, I now agree with you. If you were able to get by with an 11" MBA for two years you will be able to adjust to the 12" rMB from the 23" MBP.

The only thing that is really unknown for me is whether I will be able to get by on the 2304 x 1440 resolution without scaling it down. On my current 11" MBA I sit close enough that I can see the individual pixels (which kind of drives me crazy) so I think I will able to tolerate the smaller text.

To me, almost as important as the retina display (well, ok, not really), is the contrast level of the new display. Apple generally picks out displays with high contrast and good color balance and I suspect the new display (IGZO?) will shine very well in that department. The higher contrast will allow me to more pleasantly view smaller text and icons. I expect to be one of the few doing occasional CAD software on my rMB. :)

You are missing a major factor in your statement. On an iPad 99% of sites you're viewing are in "mobile" form. You are not seeing the full site. Also, the screen resolution on an iPad shows texts and images "larger" than on a desktop screen.

Anyone who wants to compare screen sizes and argues there is little difference between 1-2 inches clearly does not (and no...playing with it at the store does not count) have or use both the 11" and 13" MBA. I used the 11" and my wife uses the 13" everyday. When I use her MBA it amazes me how much larger the screen is and how much more information fits on the screen. The 12" will be a nice alternative since the screen is larger than the 11" but the body is smaller.

There are returns

If I find it too small I will return it.

People seem to forget you can return an Apple product without much fuss.

2 inches, yes, big difference. 11.6 vs 12? .4 inches is negligible.

Plus 16:10 ratio + Retina display + ability to scale resolutions. All those things make for an improved user experience from a 11.6" screen, much more than a small difference there.

11.6 vs 13 isn't 2 inches, it's 1.4".

That said, it may be only 0.4" but it's 16:10 - that alone makes a huge difference in comfort. Not to mention it's Retina, which is in another league altogether, and you can adapt the real estate with scaling.

Just comparing the gross size of the screen is almost dishonest. Not to mention rounding up or down just to make a point.

With the aspect ratio change, I think all of the extra .4" winds up as vertical screen space, which is a big plus (IMO).

Yes, changing to 16:10 and increasing to 12" (from the 11.6" MBA) produces an additional 0.6" in the vehicle (height) and the horizontal viewing (width) stays almost the same.

(See the "MBA Crossovers" thread)

Sounds completely fine to me.

With a high quality IPS retina display, I think it will feel like a much bigger increase than just 11.6" to 12".

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I actually thought the rMB was going to be 12.2" or 12.6" or something like that, I didn't actually realize it was 12.0" until I read the specs a week or so after the announcement. It's a little smaller than I'd like, but with the other factors involved I'm sure it'll be fine.

The fact that is only 12.0" (and not 12.6" or whatever) leads me to think that there really might be a 14" rMB in the future from Apple (although there have absolutely no rumors about such a device). I'd really have no interest in a 14" device. I think the compactness of the 12" rMB offering will be just perfect for me.

If they ultimately replace the MBA, it would make sense to replace the MBA 13" by a MB 14" - keeps roughly the same footprint if you reduce the bezels.

But that's probably not going to happen before 2-3 years.

I'm not interested either. I think the whole point of the rMB is about making a laptop as small as possible without sacrificing things like a full-size keyboard. 13 inch screens are as big as I go.

Do you actually need it? Or it is just a new product? Sounds like your going for the top of the line BTO

Geekbench scores seem to show that the upper speed versions have greatly improved performance.

Well it's all relative :) about 15% ? Is the usual jump to the top Bto around that though, for any laptop?

Or is this one more ? Or is the usual one around 10%? Been ages since I upgraded

I'm hoping for about a 20% gain. I doesn't matter, though, Im sure even the base model would work. I just want the best in a small package.
