Updating my Powerbook 5300c

Not really -- I've had a few computers in the meantime, but the MBP 2.4 160/7200rpm that I ordered this morning marks my official switch back to Apple. I hope I can adapt to OSX after Mac Version 7.5.2!

The only glitch (if you can call it that) is that my configuration with the 7200rpm 160gb HD says "Shipping in 4-6 weeks" -- bummer!

I'm sorely tempted to get one, but with that big of an investment (I bought one of the Intel iMacs and a Macbook last year) I'm still slightly undecided. My wife uses the Macbook, and I'd like to get a Mac that will replace the desktop machine AND be portable.

I'm using up 189GB of 250 on my iMac. I'm not sure I could live in 160GB, and the 200GB drive upgrade is expensive and slow @4200RPM. I want to be able to do some home video editing, possibly using a consumer HD camcorder in the future. I'm okay editing the video on an external 7200RPM drive and export my final projects to the system drive for portability, but I still want to make sure that the drive, whether it's 4200 or 5400, will give me what I need.

Guess I need to see if I can slim myself down to a smaller HD size! I believe there's a significant performance difference between a 4200 and 5400.

I know there may be additional product announcements next week, but I just don't see them releasing anything that would trump the new MBP as my perfect desktop/mobile replacement system. Nor would I expect to see any hardware design changes until October when Leopard comes out. I guess a rose by any other name, though... Leopard should run just as beautifully on this revision of Macbook pro as it does an October redesign. Do you guys see them introducing any new hardware that takes better advantage of the announced or rumored Leopard features?

Ah, decisions, decisions.

I have to fax in the educational info to go with the Student ADC tomorrow morning, but that shouldn't be much of a problem. Ordering the high-end 15" around noon local time tomorrow. Not that my desktop is going to retire anytime soon, but it will be nice to have a laptop again.

No, Tiger. What I would prefer is to have a nice, stable OS (like Tiger) on my new MBP and then upgrade to Leopard after the initial shake out of that new, and very cool OS. I'll probably upgrade in early 2008.

Same here. I'll be getting the 2.4 15" in the next week or two. I'm very excited about Leopard and do plan to upgrade once any kinks are worked out, but this being my first Mac, I'd rather have my switch to OS X be as seamless as possible. :D

I'm not waiting for Leopard anymore -- I'm gonna get one when I get back from my skii trip end of this month!

I'll be getting the 15" w/ 2.4GHz processor.. But I dunno if I should maximize the hard disk...

1900x1200 resolution on a 17" screen is in theory great. It means I can be a bit happier about getting rid of my Dell 24" monitor. However, I fear it might be slightly too many pixels on a small screen, if that's possible?

It's personal/physical preference. Some people love that type of setup, for others 1280x1024 on a 19" 4:3 display is REALLY pushing the limits of usable resolution.

10.5 is supposed to bring resolution independence, which would make it a moot point if it really works. Vista supposedly has resolution independence too, although I don't know how well it works (it has to do some tricks to get older programs that don't know about it to work right, and possible 10.5 would have to do the same thing).

3) Still not sure whether a 17" MBP is really that portable - lack of bags for it, etc

Probably also personal/physical preference and what exactly you use it for. For me, it wouldn't be a big deal at all to move around every day, but some people act like the 13" Macbook is just enormous. I don't know about specific Macbook bags, but my Best Buy has a decent selection of cases for 17" notebooks, which is what I'd probably get for one.

What on earth does this mean?

Check earlier in the thread. All notebooks use LCD screens. The new 15" Macbook Pros have LED lighting rather than CCFL lighting. Theoretically it uses less power, and CCFLs have some mercury in them.

Just ordered 15inch with 7200rpm hard disc.

5 weeks estimated shipping time, I dont think il cope :(

I wonder why they're delayed like that? I wonder if they have to get them to Apple, who then swaps drives in the United States or something?

Seems only to be a delay on the 15 inch models, with 7200rpm hard drive then.

Can anyone give me some advise?

I have made the decision to go mac but I can't decide whether to have a top end macbook with 2gb ram or have a new macbook pro.

I will be using the mac mainly for music production with the likes of Ableton Live, garageband and logic pro.

Is the macbook pro a bit over kill for what I'd be using it for or would there be a big difference in performance.

Any advise would be gratefully appreciated.

Are they any good? To be honest I saw them but thought they looked a bit small and fiddley.

advice on music production

I use Ableton live (mostly), logic, garage band and reason to compose music, do film scores, record audio and DJ. I have been doing these things on a 1.33ghz G4Powerbook for 3years. I have just ordered the 2.4ghz MBpro with 2Gig ram and standard 160gig HDD.

I am spending the money to upgrade because I'm finding the power of my computer is restricting what I do. It has taken quite a while for me to push this limit so you may not need the speed of the pro if you are starting out.

The top end macbook with 2gig of ram is a really powerful computer. It will run heaps of plugins and virtual instruments and lots or tracks. I doubt you will feel restricted by it.
If you have unlimited funds, get the Pro. If need to stretch your budget as far as you can and you also need other equiptment, get the macbook and put the extra money into a good controller k/board or some semi pro monitors.
As time goes by and software gets updated and new plugins get more power hungry, you will start to feel the restrictions of whatever you buy. So buy what you need now ( I think the top end macbook) and save to update in 3yrs.

hope that helps.

I will wait until next week

I am going to wait until next week to buy my new MBP.

I am waiting to see if WWDC will bring any updates or options such as iLife 07 or BlueRay

Then I will get :
-2.2Mhz
with a 200gb drive(I am justifying the lower rpms by telling myself that I only use large files once in a while and I can deal with a 5 sec delay per GB. also a 200gb drive with 150gb on it is faster than a 160gb with 150gb on it)

-iPod 30g for $50 ($249 - $199 rebate)
-Canon Pixma ip4300 ($99 - $99) I don't need this but why not for free

Total cost $2409 before rebates. $2109 after

iPod rebates...

You know, the iPod rebate, for me, eases the pain that Leopard is not available. One can sell the iPod on Ebay for a healthy % of its value and use that money for the Leopard update later. And note when the rebate ends - probably around the same time Leopard comes out!
