Looking at the original screenshot comparing the two, I think the "different font" is actually jpeg compression. Look at the search button in the bottom right compared to the one in the old screenshot, you can see the jpeg artifacts in the 3.0 one. Also the font is the same, look at how all the letters are slightly different except for I.

I'm pretty sure nothing is changed and you just found a crappy screenshot. If someone could compare two devices side by side that would be the real comparison.

Most people replying to this topic sound like idiots. What Thespaz is saying makes perfect sense...

Nobody had any problems with the keyboard.
They changed it anyways, now it has problems.

Doesn't matter if it is a Beta or not, there was no need to touch it when they have plenty of other things that DO need attention.

Exactly, this thread is utterly useless. Aren't there more important issues in the world to be concerned about than the image of pressed keys being too big?? Sheesh

Bro, do you just sit staring at your phone all day trying to think of new threads?

And you know this how?? You took a poll or something...? Besides if ppl dislike it so much, don't upgrade. It is not a mandatory upgrade...or is it?

I had a problem with the keyboard - it was too small and close together; hence the landscape keyboard. Many people share the same view.

It most certainly does matter - it's BETA.. there are BUGS in beta software. That's the whole point.

Plenty of things that DO need attention? If you say MMS I swear....

It's not jpeg compression. They used a different font or modified the letters. Look at the "M" it's skinnier now. Also, landscape keyboard has been possible since the beginning... they didn't have to modify the keyboard to make it landscap-able. If it ain't broke... don't fix it and break it more.

poor apple...

if i had to guess, apple devs were spending most of their time incorporating the new API's and core OS features.
I'm sure the UI was not a priority as it is a beta.
apple probably was like crap, we have to release this tomorrow, and hacked together a new keyboard.
i'd much rather see new core features in a beta than a perfect user interface...
it'll probably be the same with the next beta release, expect core changes.
i'm sure aesthetics will be a secondary objective until they are approaching the final release...

*groan* This thread isn't really getting anywhere...

I agree with OP if it is in fact a pointless change and not just a bad screen shot. With all the effort that's going in to the new APIs for the SDK and the 100+ features what is the point in changing the font on the keyboard?

And to all the people that are just repeating each other over and over again to belittle the OPs question, why post and keep the thread at the top? If you don't like it, don't post and it'll fall into obscurity.

This is an accurate assumption. Only problem is, its not just Devs using the new APIs and Core services that are using the 3.0 SDK/3.0B.

I am a developer that is finally getting close to finishing my own passable app, and I've now transitioned into the 3.0 SDK (with subsequent beta os) to start using the overall relevant tools. The new APIs/CS are cool, very cool, with unlimited potential, but they don't apply to the app(s) I've been working on.

Still, i need to use 3.0 because by the time I'm ready to release these, 3.0 will be the standard.

So for me, and 90% of other Devs, I need a mostly working beta for FULL testing. :D

you make a good point. i'm sure apple will get there. aesthetic perfection is inherent to apple products by default :D

Here's what I mean about the big key pop-ups. That looks so distracting. It's like BAM!

For best use you should not be staring at he jeybosd as you type. Btw the popups look that big on my phone as I type this and I do not have 3.0

I realize it's a beta, but I was really questioning why they had to make that small of a change to the keyboard for no reason and break other things in the process only to have more to fix. The previous keyboard worked flawlessly for me.

As far as I know the only landscape keyboard before was in Safari, right? Well, I don't know if you've noticed but in Safari if you have the keyboard open and tilt the phone, nothing goes to landscape. You have to tilt the iPhone, let it go to landscape first and then open the keyboard. That's how it always worked in Safari, the only app with a landscape keyboard.

So actually they DID have to change a few things. The keyboard in Mail and SMS goes to landscape whether you already have the keyboard open or not, so it's different from how the Safari keyboard always worked.

Excellent point. I didn't even think about that when I posted about the keyboard not fitting after the transition...

Third party apps have had support for landscape keyboard all along so your point doesn't make any sense. BeeJive switches to landscape whether the keyboard is open or not. Safari is not the only App with a landscape keyboard.

Yeah, but Apple didn't develop Beejive, did they?

My point is that apple actually did have to change a few things on the landscape keyboard in their own apps.

No, but Apple developed the keyboard that BeeJive uses. BeeJive did not re-create the widescreen keyboard... it's part of the OS. Any app can go to landscape if the developer decides to add that function. Apple could have easily just used the built in landscape keyboard that they created in their SDK. By the way... did you see in the keynote where Apple said that they use the same SDK to build their apps as the SDK that the developers get? Obviously they don't give the developers everything they (Apple) have, but the abilities that the developers do get are the same as Apple's.

When I'm on that google mobile page and press "T", it doesn't even pop up on my 2.2.1. OMG SHOXXX HORRONZ

I'm not really on either side of this argument, as long as I have a usable keyboard I couldn't give a toss what it looked like. Some people really need to relax about every single little detail that is held within a BETA software. If you're an end user you really ought not to be worried about certain UI right now. You should only be using this if you're Dev'ing and then really only using that to test out your app's usability.

You'd think iPhone OS 3.0 is the worst thing that ever happened to TheSpaz.
Do you complain this much in reality too? Or is it just an internet thing?

Either way, it's getting on everyone's last nerve.

I really don't think I'm complaining that they changed the keyboard... I'm simply inquiring as to *why* they changed it. I don't lose sleep over it... geeze. You people act as if I'm the worst thing that's ever happened to this forum.
