I really don't think I'm complaining that they changed the keyboard... I'm simply inquiring as to *why* they changed it.

That's fine, but how the f*ck would we know anyway? We are not Apple, and we are just as (un)likely as you to have a scooby dooby doo (clue) as you do. You know how Apple works: "we do things, we don't tell you why, we may change it back as we see fit.. don't ask questions".

End thread?

No, but Apple developed the keyboard that BeeJive uses. BeeJive did not re-create the widescreen keyboard... it's part of the OS. Any app can go to landscape if the developer decides to add that function. Apple could have easily just used the built in landscape keyboard that they created in their SDK. By the way... did you see in the keynote where Apple said that they use the same SDK to build their apps as the SDK that the developers get? Obviously they don't give the developers everything they (Apple) have, but the abilities that the developers do get are the same as Apple's.

Apple developed the keyboard, but Beejive coded how the keyboard works in their app.

If it is true, and is too early to say, I hope they don't get rid of the international key icon. It was normally quite annoying on other phones to type in another language and be automatically corrected.
"no I didn't mean to type 'harsh', I meant to type 'arsch' (that's German for the word 'ass')

Right, but they still used the universal horizontal keyboard provided by the SDK. Couldn't Apple do that too? That's all I'm saying. A horizontal keyboard existed way before 3.0... there was no reason to change it.

But the existing keyboard worked differently in Safari, so they did make some changes in the keyboard code. And making changes sometimes break things and things have to be changed.

Spaz... you can't even tell the difference, neither is better they're not even different. Just be happy with your phone and quit starting new threads. you need to just make one thread called "Spaz's pointless annoying gripes" and we'll let you post by yourself in it.

I *can* tell the difference. Yes, I'm OCD.

I'm not saying that the new keyboard is worse (except for the huge pop-ups in landscape)... I'm saying that there was no reason to change it. The SDK already had a keyboard made for landscape.

Why do I get flamed for starting a unique discussion while there are a thousand "Should I buy the Iphone 3g?" threads?

Those threads get flamed too...
Who says there was no reason? Maybe the font is more consistent with the rest of the OS.

and there is a big difference between being clinically OCD** (no you cannot diagnose yourself) and having an obsessive personality (something you can keep in check)

**Yes, I know this sentence doesn't make sense, I was just using OCD the same way*** Spaz did.

***The wrong way

Sorry... it's a habit I have.... I guess I'm OC then. I don't have clinical OCD, but I have an obsessive personality. Is that better? Geeze... hehe. People treat me like I'm committing a crime about having an opinion...

For the rest of you. I've kindly removed my avatar because for some reason it bothers a lot of people....

...and you're welcome.

I guess I used the term OCD in the same type of way some people say "ATM Machine"... M already stands for machine, so they're basically saying it twice. I now understand completely how to correctly use the term now. What I said is like saying "I am diabetes". Hehehe. (nothing against diabetics though).

I noticed the change when I first installed 3.0. Personally, I think it looks a little more refined and feels a WHOLE lot better than the 2.2.1 version. I could never really get used to the virtual keyboard. It got to the point where I just avoided using it whenever possible (wouldn't respond to texts as frequently).

I find that typing on the new keyboard isn't bad at all now. Maybe the changes to the keyboard were more than just cosmetic ones (for the exception of landscape mode).

Just my 2 cents.

EDIT: Just to chime in on all this drama. TheSpaz obviously has to intention of changing his posting habits, so why do you even bother posting in these threads? I mean, sure, his posts can get annoying sometimes, but even that doesn't deserve some of these rude comments I'm reading. Then you guys love to pat each other on the back because of some sassy comment made against TheSpaz. Give me a f*cking break. Grow up. Ugh. Ugh.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

;)

@TheSpaz
Why not tone it down a bit, huh? I mean, why not compile a list of things you want to point out and make only one thread? Doesn't seem like a difficult thing to do, eh? ;)

This is exactly what I thought when looking at the keyboard, it just looks i dunno crisper.

Spaz's comparison shows how some of the letters were awkwardly bold before but now everything looks much more refined.

THAT is why things change, because people always try to make them better.

Come on man. You know people would be in there arguing with him non-stop.

And you know this how?? You took a poll or something...? Besides if ppl dislike it so much, don't upgrade. It is not a mandatory upgrade...or is it?

I am not complaining about it, I just think it is a poor use of time. And how do I know what? That other things need attention? Because there are 10 stupid threads complaining every day about things not working on 3.0 and I never saw a thread complaining about the font on the keyboard..

I had a problem with the keyboard - it was too small and close together; hence the landscape keyboard. Many people share the same view.

What does that have to do with this? Apple already had a landscape keyboard, they just didn't have it implemented in all applications.

It most certainly does matter - it's BETA.. there are BUGS in beta software. That's the whole point.

Yes, things they are improving, things they are adding. Those are supposed to have bugs. A keyboard that was perfectly functional did not need to be modified.

Plenty of things that DO need attention? If you say MMS I swear....

Are you using 3.0?

It's not jpeg compression. They used a different font or modified the letters. Look at the "M" it's skinnier now. Also, landscape keyboard has been possible since the beginning... they didn't have to modify the keyboard to make it landscap-able. If it ain't broke... don't fix it and break it more.

Exactly, every fan boy gets their panties in a wad just because TheSpaz made a good point on what (at this point) appears to be a poor decision by Apple.

Come on man. You know people would be in there arguing with him non-stop.

maybe a mod could make it so only Spaz could post in the thread.

EDIT: Did anyone ever think that the new keyboard has something to do with whatever new phone/product is coming out soon? Maybe it's resolution independent, or it just matches whatever keyboard is going to be in the new product better.

As shown by other posts, it looks a bit more refined.

And do you really think that apple has devoted a huge amount of people to the keyboard that they cant work on the rest of 3.0? Common sense man.

No no... I'd rather it was open to everyone so all these internet tough guys could go in there and release some of their "I'm better and smarter than everyone else" attitudes.

I mean let's face it. As much as everybody says Spaz is the village idiot (which I disagree with; I think he makes a lot of interesting points), he's more the defenseless whipping boy than anything else.

The "if it aint broke" line simply doesnt work with technology. You can always improve on things.

You know what happens when you DO go by that philosophy? You stagnate.

While the original poster has been ridiculed for starting this thread, this thread has so far received 91 replies! I guess it is a valid thread, by that logic.

At this point it actually has become a real thread lol.

I agree with you there. The keyboard does look sharper now. I guess what I'm saying is that there's a lot more things they could get done instead of tweaking the keyboard by a few pixels and in the process, breaking other parts of it (like drop shadows) that they have to go back and fix now instead of spending their time fixing and improving on things that *need* to be improved on.

The tribe has spoken.

But for me personally, something like that I wouldn't have even noticed if someone complaining (because they have nothing better to complain about) about it didn't point it out to the world. I still don't mind the change though. Apple's design team knows what they are doing. I trust their choices. :)

I didn't really have a list of things I wanted to say. Should I go back and edit the first post and point out every cosmetic oddity found in 3.0? I can do that... I've found 10 or so cosmetic bugs in 3.0 so far.

Apple's design team knows what they are doing. I trust their choices. :)

Totally. I'm sure they'll sort it all out. UI design just really interests me... hehe.

Thats the thing tho, apple loves to make things look better, and like I said previously, how long do you really think they spent on this one little thing? Hell it was probably a graphics guy just doing something on his lunch break and they decided they liked it better this way.

Apple hasnt put massive resources into it, so complaining that they could be working on other things is kind of a ridiculous statement to make.

Were they actual "visual bugs" or were they just design changes?

Good question.

There are a few actual glitches however. Last night in landscape mode of safari, whenever I went to type the keyboard would be portrait and more than halfway up the page.
