To each his own...

It used to be the fundamental difference was in the chip. Seriously. Power-PC chips had a completely different instruction set than X86 ones. Power-PC chips did wonders in the world of design, while X86 chips found there home in the business world.

If your in the market, establish your workflow first, and see what machine fits, not the other way around. In the end what matters is what you do with the hardware. How many people fully utilize every feature of their machine?

When did passwords become obsolete? Oh wait, they haven't. Otherwise, all laptops would have fingerprint readers by now. Especially a company such as Apple who has the uncanny ability to predict and set trends. Its just another unneeded item added to a crappy pc to make it seem cool.

Ignorance is bliss. You know nothing about security in the corporate world. Now wait for Apple to tell you what you need and don't need.

I don't? I work in a multi million dollar corporation and also frequent others and have never seen a finger print reader on a laptop as being an important security feature. Keep being an ignorant Apple hater and live mediocre with pc your whole life. Just remember that actions speak louder than words. You came to an Apple forum for no apparent reason. We didnt come to a pc forum.

I'm not an Apple hater at all. Do your homework. You're the one who's being ignorant. If who you like best doesn't offer it, then it's stupid, right? For others it may be an important feature. What are your actions? Your words are foolish. Obviously you don't handle classified material in your job. Others do. Get over it.

By the same token, others handle or have access to different stuff than you. Get over it.

I've got nothing to get over at all. The usual fanboys can't see beyond the end of their noses. Check out the title of this thread and see what happened. There is no rational discussion with most who replied to this thread. Any comment about wanting something that Apple doesn't offer is bashing, right? Even when you like the product and see room for improvement, right?

Long time PC (IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad) user here, switched to Apple at the end of last year.

I run OS X and Windows 7 in bootcamp in about 50/50 ratio. I switched to Apple, simply because hardware is superior. Aluminium macbooks are built super solid with no creaks or flex, and panels on them are superb, not to mention weight and battery life. Also with the most recent generation the CPU/GPU is finally powerful enough.

This just prompted me to get rid of my Macbook air and thinkpad W510 and run a 2011 Macbook Pro full time. So far I am a very satisfied customer. I have no allegiance to any manufacturer, if somebody puts out something better, I will switch away from Apple, but right now I think they make the best quality machine for the price.

The OP registered to only post this knowing that it would cause idiotic responses from some people. Seems you dislike Apple. All the posts I see from you are anti Apple. I couldn't care less if you like or dislike Apple. I like them because they build solid machines, and if said solid machines fail, their customer service is second to none; in my experiences.

And the whole finger print deal.. you really think that would be really functional and look good on a MacBook Pro? I personally think it is the most ridiculous thing. Next they will use a retina scanner, lol. People who steal a machine with a finger print reader will most likely break open the computer and take the HDD and get the info off of that. I also dislike the SD reader on my MBP.. I find it useless for ME, as my camera uses CF cards.

Wrong. I am just rational. These cheap fingerprint readers arent any more secure than a password so your arguement is moot. It is a useless feature that wont last long. There is nothing that i need that a macbook doesnt offer. If there were, then i surely would recognize it. Bluray drives may be just that for some people. Other than that i cant think of anything.

Lastly, i am far from a "fanboy". Up until last year i hadnt used An Apple computer since i was in junior high in 1991-1993. I hqd used pcs ever since. Did i ever have a hardware issue? No. Did i ever have OS issues? Of course. When i first decided to try a Mac it made just a great first impression that lasted. They are well built, look nicer, feel nicer, work better, and the OS gives a better experience. I didnt leave pc because i hated them or had a horrible experience. Mac won me over just because they are better in all aspects from the build to the software. Fanboy.. No....believer in quality made products and a great user experience... Absolutely.

I don't believe most bellow $1000.00 PC's will ever compare to any Mac. Now you start going over the $1000.00 PC price point, now you are generally going into much better build quality comparable to Macs.

People generally want cheap computers, so cost will generally effect the quality of the product.

Cheaper PC's tend to use mostly plastic & thin sheet metal vs machined aluminum.

Mac laptops have much longer battery life & last longer before replacement ( 1000 recharges vs 300 PC recharges )

Where do you see me saying I dislike Apple? If you read closely, you will see it is usually in response to an idiotic statement. I have posted many times of the positives and things I like about Apple products. The main difference I see on internet forums is that a lot Apple users get all bent out of shape if you make the slightest criticism or suggestion for improvement. For example, just bring up flash in an iPad forum. Or BluRay, USB 3 etc in a Mac Forum and see what the responses are. If this was any other computer forum but Apple, the majority of users would not get their panties in a bunch if someone suggest that Asus or Toshiba or Sony include any of these features.

Some users are so defensive it's comical. They can't even fathom that people have different wants. They'd rather think, if Apple doesn't have it, you don't need it. Why the close mindedness? Why the lack of rationality and common sense? Not bashing, just honest questions. I use a variety of products and would hardly get offended if someone had a suggestion for improvement. I think the OP proved his point by what happened in this and any other thread when someone questions Apple's godliness. Are these people as obsessed with their power company? :D:D

Quite true. The majority of the Windows pc notebooks are in the sub $1000 range and are made of plastic, and a lot of them aren't even good plastic. The trackpads can't hold a candle to the Macs and the lcd quality is generally poor in this price range. The non Apple pc market is one example of what cut throat competition can do to quality in order to meet a targeted price point.

I've always believed that there is a market for quality Windows based pcs and that some buyers wouldn't mind spending a few hundred more for a better quality unit.

Maybe you should go to those other forums then. Bye.

Maybe The people who you say get defensive, have the same reasoning as Apple in what they do or do not include in their hardware. Apple does what they do for a reason....not to just cut costs as other manufacturers do. No bluray...they dont believe that should be the direction of media. No usb 3.0....they came up with thunderbolt. They have reasons.

Ok, I will chime in. Besides the fact that Apple builds class-leading machines with one of the deepest investments in Engineering R&D & supply-chains and earliest access to Intel's latest chips (I believe), they are actually more than that. They are a Systems company.

Their machines are renowned to just-work. From their tablets, phones to laptops and desktops. You plug it in and it works. A lot of the credit obviously goes to the software running these machines as well (iOS & OS X), so the systems are almost always balanced just right.

I have been told by many owners of macs that simply because they have a Mac that their hardware is better then any other computer. I attempt to tell them the only actual difference between mac and "PC's" is the OS and in actuality Apple buys its hardware from the same people that the PC vendors get their hardware from.
In fact I have often dug up evidence that Macs do not have the best Hardware. Currently ASUS and Toshiba lead with mac in fourth of the largest 8 PC manufactures.

Mac users falsely believe that Apple hardware is superior to PC hardware, because most of the time it is. The problem with this assertion is that, most of the time you're comparing $1200 MBP's with $500 PC's...

As a previous poster pointed out, once you get into the >$1000 range, the build quality is just as good. But no one would consider spending so much money on a PC, typically, so they end up comparing their $500 Toshiba with a $1800 MBP. One's more than 3x as expensive, guess which is going to be built a little bit better.

Also, most mac users have never used a "good" PC. By that, I mean most converts are the people who purchased a $500 laptop, expecting it to work perfectly, and then switched to OS X... If you find anyone who's used a $1000 Windows laptop, normally they're satisfied. They may prefer OS X or Apple design, but more often than not they don't bash PC's as much.

This whole debate is really just a "6 of one vs 1/2 dozen of the other" kind of thing, isn't it?

It's really all about personal preference. I like the MacBook Pro better than any other laptop I've used, but that doesn't mean that everyone else should/will.

Ignorance is bliss. You know nothing about security in the corporate world. Now wait for Apple to tell you what you need and don't need.

Actually, finger print scanners in laptops are worthless. Seriously worthless. I work for a fortune 500 company, we tried to roll it out to all our laptop users on our lenovos. Epic Fail. In the end, we went to dual passwords instead. Finger print scanners in laptops can not tell if what is being scanned on it is even alive. Do a google search for "fooling finger print scanners with playdough". Further, because it requires a swipe motion rather than just putting your finger on a sensor, the failure right is astronomical.

The only decent finger print scanners out there are the ones that also check for either perspiration and/or heart beats.

So don't talk about corporate security which you clearly know nothing about.

Intel developed the tech behind Thunderbolt and USB 3.0.

I think it's also foolish to think that USB 3.0 won't be supported on the Mac. Thunderbolt is a glorified PCI-E slot that doesn't so much compete with USB 3.0 but augments it. Hell, eventually you'll be able to plug a USB 3.0 device into a USB 3->Thunderbolt adaptor.

They tried to make the 2 compatible, but the "USB Consortium" would not allow it.

Nice post. In 2006, I bought a high quality PC laptop for about $1600 and it was on par with Apple build quality at the time in most ways. I'd contend that most of the PCs that retail for less than $1000 are mediocre, and just about all PCs priced less than $600 are complete garbage. I happen to think that current MBP physical design is as good as it gets but I know better than to think that there's a one-size-fits-all standard for PC quality.

You get what you pay for...

Not intended to bash MBP at all, but have you ever used a Lenovo Thinkpad? Just about every major review has stated that it has the best keyboard in the business. As far as features go, be realistic. Many any other notebooks have more features, especially in the business world.

I used to think that Lenovo is good but the quality has degraded massively in the last 2 years. IBM thinkpads used to be far better than the rest. For any of you who are old enough to remember digital (Dec laptops in 90s were a generation ahead but 25% expensive than the the others).

Open a Lenovo and open a MBP and see it for yourself. You will appreciate the engineering which went inside of the MBP. If you have to use PC then I think ACER, Sony and Lenovo are comparable.

I use PC's most of the time, but for laptops I prefer Mac.

Why would I pay 1.5x 2x more??

1) the trackpad, name me one PC laptop with a trackpad that is as big and has the same features (gestures, the whole trackpad is the mouse button)

2) the webcam. The PC laptops have inferior webcams and windows takes a few seconds to start it up. On the mac it's almost instant. I use this feature a lot.

3) Form Factor - great enclosure, great build, no latches, nice keyboard, durable

4) Display - good viewing angles

Mind you there are still disadvantages with some Macbooks, like heat, noise, and sometimes lower specs, but I still keep coming back. If a
PC manufacture came out with a machine with apple style trackpad and webcam, I'd probably buy it.

Your company stopped using fingerprint readers so I guess that means that every business in the world stopped too?
