I never get anything on day one. Never pre ordered anything before. I plan on just walking into the store and buying one out of contract in the middle of next month. I still got a buzz of iOS5 and iCloud. Hopefully there will be an untethered Jailbreak before then.

The problem is that there is always a real chance that iPhones/iPads sell out at launch. If you don't get one on launch day, you have no idea when stock is going to come back in leaving you at the mercy of checking/phoning the Apple Store at random and hearing "oh, they got a delivery this morning but they're all gone now" for weeks on end.
Therefore, launch day is the only day that you know a massive batch of stock will be available instore and queuing at launch is the only way to make sure you get one within the first month or so of release of the product.

I lost my iPhone last week, so stuck with a little brick for about a week and a bit, I miss having smartphone!

FWIW I won't have a 4S on Day One b/c I'm not eligible for another month. But first opportunity it will be in my hands. As long as Apple makes cool stuff I will want it ASAP.
Because I've had my 3GS since June of 2009, and want a change. I've been waiting since February when I became eligible for an upgrade, believing I would be getting one in June. And and now that it's October, I REALLY want it now...

Why do some people automatically assume that all launch day buyers already own an older generation iPhone? I for one, don't.
For starters, I see a lot of good responses to the op. Whatever happened to "I gave a company $300, I would like to have the product at the earliest possible opportunity"? I think that all the customer service calls are a little neurotic but i don't think the excitement and anticipation is.

Ah, at the Forum! I have a bunch of friends who will be there, too (and the 13th as well).
Me, I just want it ASAP because I want it ASAP; I'll readily admit to being a gadget whore. I'm kicking out a lot of money for it, and I'd like to see the dividends as quickly as possible.

I love the shape, feel and look of the i4 and am really excited for the upgraded specs. it's like Xmas for grown ups. A lot of dark days lately so why not get excited about something new. Besides, by next summer you can sell the old phone, buy a new one and only be out of pocket what you'd pay for the upgrade.
I would understand if this was the iPhone 5, but a 4S?! Come on people. You dont need to have a spec bump on day one. The only reason you should want it on Day One is to show it off to everyone you know proclaiming, "I got the Newest iPhone on DAY ONE!!!"
But hey, guess what? The 4S looks identical to the 4. I feel bad for those getting a 4S on Friday, becuase next summer they will be deep into a contract when the ALL-NEW iPhone 5 is released. Sucks for you guys. Welcome to the iPhone "S" release cycle. It sucks and you will dread being on the bandwagon in about a year!

I wonder how people are buying them to sell on eBay. Don't you have to sign a 2 year contract with a cellular provider to get subsidized pricing? So, how do those folks buy them then sell at inflated prices on eBay?
Anyway I missed the window so I'll have to wait on mine from Apple. I really don't mind the wait. However, if I didn't already have on iPhone, albeit an older 3 GS, and an iPad 2 I might be eager. And would probably be waiting in line at the closest Apple Store tomorrow
