Re: one-handed usage.

One difference with iOS devices as compared to Android devices, is a lack of a physical Back button underneath the display.

My Android phone has 2 physical buttons, the power on the right, the volume on the left. The back button is on the screen. Actually fewer physical buttons than the iPhone.

Lol @ the people who fake like 3.5 is perfect...

You all must have hands of a 10 year old girl & wear super tight nut hugging jeans, ****ing pathetic.

4.3-4.5 would be perfect, nothing under , nothing over

I actually wear pretty baggy clothing, but nice try. I like 3.5" because I barely feel it in my pocket, and it's easy to use one-handed while carrying a bunch of crap with the other arm and walking down the street.

The whole "fit into my pocket" argument is invalid. I have owned phones of all sizes and never had an issue getting them into my jean pockets or my dress slacks pockets. The only phone that people might have issues with fitting into pants pockets is the Note. The Note is an exception to the large phone segment, not the rule. Even the skinny jeans crowd seems to have no problems whatsoever buying Android phones and fitting them in their pockets. The argument is baseless and irrational.

Really?!?!

I can understand some people like smaller screens. However I would like to have choice. I'd immediately buy a 4.5" iphone and leave Android. And have a 3.5" and 4" iPhone for people who prefer mobility.

Macbooks have screen sizes ranging from 11" to 17". Why is Apple so anal about the iPhone's screen size? Get some clever scaling solutions in iOS. It jus doesn't make sense anymore to not have choice.

========================================================
Seriously? Comparing the range in Macbooks to what you perceive should be a similar offering in a phone range? R&D, properly done effectually concluded that the 3.5 was the sweet spot for portability and battery consumption among other advantages. If you want a huge screen then get a tablet. Apple, i'm sure, anticipated aberrations such as your preferences so the tablet was born. But like some, even if a 4.5" screen was provided, you'd find something else to complain about. Such is life. As "The Rock" would say, "Know your role and shut your mouth!" ....lol.

Don't you know that every single iPhone user uses every aspect of their iPhone with one hand and that hand is child-like in size?

I can't figure it out either. I've got short stubby fingers and thumb, and I can reach well beyond the left edge of the screen with ease (where another stack of icons might be). And guess what? Most things on the phone require two hands anyway. Yes, this dogged determination by the faithful to live in the past is very frustrating.

Best I can figure is that it's what Steve told them to think several years ago and now everyone repeats this nonsense ad-nauseum.

Another trick they'll use is to exaggerate by comparing a larger iPhone to a 747 jumbo jet. Don't be fooled!

hahahah this is THE.POST.OF.THE.THREAD great stuff man you crack me up, even that one button mouse comment :)

The fragmentation in Android, such as 80% not running the latest software.

Is that what fragmentation is!! ohhh right

I had several jumbo android phones with screens ranging from 4.3" to 4.65"...

I dumped them all for a 3.5" iPhone.

lol i dont know what to say to that....i mean, you're saying that with pride so it sort of shuts me up.

I don’t know about you but I like to have my phone fit into my pocket.

The pocket issue is overblown mostly for people that wear normal size clothes.

The usuability issue is valid and glaring when using a platter phone.

One handed operation is a blessing. I have medium size hands, and using my iPhone just feels nicer in the hand and in use.

I am quite contented with my iPhone screen size. If it’s the same size as the tabs then it isn’t iPhone anymore! A little bigger than the current iPhone size is ok, but making it 7 inches is a different story. iPhone has been known (and loved) for the current screen size, I’m quite open to a bigger one, but please 5-7 is too much. That is why there are a lot on the mrket so as to suit the users’ preferences or needs.

No one said 5-7" did they?

The reason is that they save money using the same design for iphone 4s as iphone 4, and other improvement (outside of screen) is enough to sell iphone 4s for customers, and in the same time, they can reserve bigger screen for future update (like iphone 5).

They are basically maximum their profit, they always did that with the upgrade in other products as well, like macbook pro, if the CPU speed remains similar (like core 2 duo), they upgrade the design and battery life, when the speed increase is significant (c2d to core i5) they keep everything else the same. Nothing wrong with the strategy though.

Perhaps it's as simple as Apple truly being attached to a tiny screen.

That's one thing that is unique to the phone by now.

Just think of how unique it will be, if in two more years it's still just a 4.0" display.

There's no denying that Apple can sell anything.

I like how people say they can't fit larger phones in their pocket, what are you wearing? Latex pants??? You are way to accustomed to your iPhones everyone! I can perfectly fit my friends Galaxy Note in my skinny jeans pocket without it being uncomfortable. Seriously? Are your hands really that small to find larger than iPhone screen sizes retaining? I really want to know.

Apple needs to step up with the new iPhone because the rumors are horrendous. Smartphones are and will continuously get bigger and more advanced and Apple, as sad as it is, is just late to the party. :(

The biggest problem is the way iOS deals with resolutions, which basically means that Apple has to double the screen resolution in order to make it easier for devs. Once they can figure out a better solution for true resolution independence Apple will be able to change iphone's screen size and aspect ratio at will.

Not everyone likes the same thing. What's so difficult with that concept?

I like my 4s. I liked my Droid Pro before that. I don't like my wife's droid 4. Too thick, but that is the price for a physical keyboard. Too long and too wide for me. (is that your cell phone? Or are you just happy to see me?) :)If it weren't so thick, i'd probably get used to it.

For me., I don't need a larger phone. That is what I have an iPad for.

I think the answer as to why people have such very different views/experiences of this is pretty obvious. I have average sized hands for a man (perhaps a bit bigger than average). Two scenarios:

1) If I hold a 4S so that the bottom left corner is in the centre of the palm of my left hand I can reach the top right corner comfortably with my (left hand) thumb, but I can't reach much further; but

2) If I hold it so that the bottom left corner is closer to the lower (little finger side) edge of my palm I can reach way beyond the the top right corner.

I don't think either way is right or wrong, and I rather suspect that both camps, both those saying 'anything bigger than 3.5" is too big to use one-handed' and those saying 'it's easy to use a 4.x" phone one-handed', are correct. It all depends on how you hold the phone. Personally, I prefer to hold it as in scenario 1), I think because the phone feels more secure, and thus don't want a phone much bigger than 3.5" (I do use my phone predominantly one-handed, except when typing). That said, the 4.0" leaked design with a smaller bezel will probably be ok.

Sure not everyone likes the same thing, but Apple decides to go with the smaller screen size and I have the right to argue against it.

An iPad isn't a phone, and I sure don't carry my iPad everywhere I go.

I'll gladly take a smaller screen if it means that we can continue to have the best app store (by far) out there.

The whole bigger is better notion when it comes to smartphone screens is just a fad that will pass and which originated due to other manufacturers being unable to compete with the iPhone on the same screen size. Apple is doing the right and pragmatic thing in making the screen longer just enough to accommodate a 16:9 ration. When they release the iPhone 5 with such a screen, it will make the 4.5+ screen Android phones look and feel bloated and too big in comparission.

Interestingly enough, the reverse has happened in the tablets market. Being unable to compete with the iPad on the same screen size, other tablet manufacturers opted instead for the smaller and cheaper tablet in order to try and undercut the iPad in terms of price. But once Apple releases the iPad mini, it will show the Android tablets to be too small and not worth it in comparison to the slightly more expensive iPad Mini.
Sorry but I have to disagree. The comparison to the new iPhone and other larger Android devices should have already subsided with the iPhone 4 release... which it has. That's why it wouldnt make sense to say that if Apple releases the new iPhone (which is pretty much a re-release of the iPhone 4) that Android users would feel that there phones are too big.

Apple is in the prime with this anticipated release, I know that more than most people will be upset that Apple just released another iPhone 4, but hey, it's their company so they can do whatever they want.

Apple could release a larger phone right now and 90% of this forum will jump all over it, proclaim it the new "sweet spot," and wonder aloud how they ever got by with a smaller screen. It doesn't matter what you say now, we all know it's true and when Apple releases it and puts its magical spin on it, you'll be running over each other for the chance to preorder it.

Ok by me. I just don't like the mentality that says if you are happy with the cure t size phone you are an apple tool. Personally, I am not. Sure, I'd be happy with a slightly larger phone. But I don't need a larger phone.
