Yup. Lets fill the laptop with every port possible. VGA, DVI, HDMI, hell lets even through in an e-SATA. Why not? People can't be bothered to purchase accessories. Can't forget about expresscard either.

Now imagine what your MBP would look like and the added price.

Well to start there is no reason eSATA shouldn't be on at least the Mac Pro and iMac.

DVI and VGA are about having USEFULL ports. A Display port is worthless to over 90% of the buyers, and an adapter is required. Don't even get me started about express card. I had to get rid of all the damn sprint and Verizon cards in my office and purchase all new USB cards.

Look like? Why should I care what it LOOKS like? I want FUNCTIONALITY. When we got new MacBooks, I was required to buy all new adapters just to USE them with stuff that was only 6 months old! Apple must not care about market share, because they keep pissing off corporate users, or atleast their IT departments. Supporting Macs are a nightmare.

Ahhhhh good old fashioned unsubstantiated statistics lol 95% of macrumors members don't actually have a mac.

Though, I was actually dealing with an end user today, and she wanted to use her 2010 macbook with our antiquated projectors. So I said, "Do you have a mini displayport to vga adapter?" After she looked at me like I was insane, I asked " did you buy anything other than the laptop" which of course was a no, meaning they didn't have the adapter.

Today was the first time I was actually frustrated with mDP. We can actually deal with DP,HDMI,etc.

Well in the "real world" many forget it, and the fact you just used putting form over function makes your comment useless. And long battery life has NOTHING to do with the included ports. They can put on a damn SCSI port, and it won't effect battery unless it's being used.

Want to hook up to a non-Apple monitor? Oh thats $27, AND you want to use a projector? Thats another $27, want to maybe hook up to your TV? That will be $27 more please. My god, even netbooks have HDMI and VGA.

No, forgetting isn't an excuse in the real world. That crap gets you fired. And the dongles are $5 if you shop around. Netbooks also suck. And $27 is a small cost when you just paid $1300 for a computer. How much is a Starbucks coffee?

Then buy a different computer. Problem solved. Quit whining and get something else.

This person wasn't prepared to present obviously. In my University that would result in an immediate, automatic F.

That bit about about express cards is about the only useful thing you've said, and yes you might of guessed i wanted a express card to usb 3.0 card

Apple shoulda, coulda, woulda, but they haven't OK? If you already have a MBP, then quit whining. You should know what you're buying into. If you haven't got one, then shop elsewhere. This thread is going nowhere but in circles IMO and some people should really stop crying over spilt milk. Deal with it, live with it and get a dongle... SIMPLE! Jeeeez!

More ports occupy more space, brainiac, and that results in less room for battery.

And it's not 27$ for an adapter, more like 15$ MAX. Usually around 7 bucks.

Unless you're stupid and buy it from Apple :p I bought my mDP to HDMI adapter for 7€ and it would even carry audio if my iMac supported it

That's freakin' awesome! Care to share the link? Usually mDP to HDMI adapters are 15 bucks at least. 7 bucks and audio? Niceeeh

You guys seem to like to forget corporations buy these things, and thats run by the finance department, not IT.

WHen you have contracts with a place to buy from them you pay there prices, and the adapters ARE $27.

I never said forgetting was an "excuse" I said that it HAPPENS. I have had executives tell people that were coming to present "oh dont worry about bringing stuff IT will take care of it" then get pissed at me that I dont have the adapter for some plug I"ve never seen, the mini-DVI in that case when the presenter brought a white MacBook.

Also try telling a designer you want to hire that hey dont use MacBooks in your office, only PC's. Many will look at you as if its physically impossible to not design on a Mac. SO there goes your "buy something else" argument.

Maybe as a freelancer you points make sense. But not in a big company. I give 2 adapters to every macbook user that leaves my office, a DVI and a VGA. They get lost all the time, i have 15 of each in my storeroom right now. I get asked almost weekly for another one, or for a client that doesn't have one. My users keep acting like its expected for IT to fully support the visitor, they could put down a laptop from 2130 on my desk and expect me to have the right adapter and look at me like I'm crazy if I don't.

As for battery, the Acer timelineX, has Corei5/7, VGA, HDMI, and a MUCH better video card than the Macbook Pro and still gets 8hrs. I have also never gotten 10hrs out of my MBP, I average maybe 8.5.

People who are "stupid" enough to buy computers from Apple might as well buy adapters from them too. Right?

That doesn't make any sense. Why would you be "stupid" for buying computers from Apple?

I think it's implied that an individual who says that the mDP adapter is overpriced when purchased from Apple fails to see that the computer purchase itself is overpriced and purchased from apple.

Not my assertion, just a guess.

You lost me there... Seriously... That makes no damn sense.

Oh boy. What a load of...

I've been using laptops since the dawn of ages. I always have 1 or 2 video ports of some kind and it's always the case that I'm missing out on one I really want! I had S-video, but nothing I used had S-video but I needed VGA. Then I had VGA, but I also needed HDMI. Then I got a laptop with HDMI and VGA, woot, but that means I don't get to use my 1920x1200 resolution on my Dell U2410 monitor!!! No matter what they do, something is always amiss.

And don't even talk to me about trying to get VGA work for someone with only HDMI. I had to help someone with that, oh the headaches!

I use DisplayPort on my desktop PC (it comes with DisplayPort, HDMI and DVI cause it has the room!!!) with my Dell monitor. It means I get full resolution. On my TV, I use Medialink and PS3, I don't need no HDMI cable. And in those rare occasions I want to mess around with cables, a simple dongle solves my problems.

And you know what? The Macbook Pro is the first laptop where I didn't have to worry AT ALL about what kind of projector the university provided for a classroom or event. If it's VGA, I'm ready. If it's HDMI, I'm ready. All it takes is two dongles. And if I want the Macbook Pro on a nice monitor screen, I have DisplayPort. Or DVI.

One port, ready for any situation.

I don't get all the complaining at all.

Where do I connect my 2560x1600 monitor? :)

If a laptop doesn't support that on an external monitor, it's a no-go.

Please remember that VGA is unable to do that resolution (seriously, that connection needs to die now) and although HDMI 1.4 does support high resolutions, monitors with that possibility are not in existence to my knowledge and customers shouldn't have to worry about version revisions in their display connections.

im not aware of any 1.4 compatible computers, nor any LCD monitors that go that high in the general consumer/prosumer end of things. kind of redundant.

First off, $27 is nothing for a corporation. Second, maybe your company should hire more competent people? Seriously. I do IT work at a University and every Mac user always has their adapter. They know how to be prepared. And if a faculty member loses the adapter, which is University property, they need to replace it themselves. We aren't babysitters, they are grown adults and they manage. It's your fault that people lose them and don't bring them. If you didn't keep spares to bail people out they would be more responsible and remember them.

My point exactly. :)

Personally, I like mDP. With a single, small cable (not like a Dual-Link DVI) I can connect my computers to a 27" screen and enjoy a huge workspace. It's a far better interface for computer monitors than HDMI, DVI and VGA.
