im saying the macbooks are outdated, yes. hence the new design. Hey, maybe there aware of all the cracking and are switching to some sort of hard cold easily manufactured stuff. oh yea, aluminum:p

Have you seen the new design? I didn't think so. All of this "aluminum" stuff is just rumours. And either way, Apple releasing a new MacBook now doesn't really make mine any better built, now does it?

The MacBook is an embarrassment of design. No vents on the underside, the screen bevel is a loose piece of paper-thin plastic that is uneven and spots and ends abruptly near the bottom, and is completely loose at the bottom of the screen. The plastic on the top case is barely a millimeter thick and is just sort of stuck on there awkwardly.

The MacBook does some things right; the keyboard, trackpad, and webcam are all great. And of course, OS X is amazing. However, that does not make up for shortcomings on such an expensive machine!

Im really sick of these threads, if you dont like your Mac or you think Apple is screwing you I really could care less and the only reason that Im posting this now is to make that clear. You want to go gripe about how bad Apple is go to dellrumors.com.

The OP didn't start out griping. She started out discussing a LEGITIMATE problem she experienced with Apple, a company she had placed a lot of faith in. Whether she was able to take advantage of warranties or not is irrelevant to her complaint: that the computer she purchased (at a high price, with money she could hardly spare) was buggy.

I think she has every right to express her discontent, if only so forum users can help her navigate AppleCare or encourage her to stay with the company.

While it's true that most people have fantastic experiences with Apple, there are some who end up with machines that don't serve them. To tell any naysayers to leave shows a lack of compassion and the elitism that half the world hates about the crowd Apple attracts.
I think all of us want to see Apple's marketshare grow. To do that, you MUST reach out to those who are dissatisfied with Windows (a growing number). To encourage that, Apple itself and we as Apple devotees should focus on ACCESSIBILITY. Don't drive people away...

I hope the OP hasn't been offended, and might someday give :apple: another chance.

I'm a boy, just FYI. :)

Oh, sorry! Haha.
Being female, I tend to assume other posters are female, although looking at the demographics of MR, I don't think that's the case. :p I've noticed most people do this, though... I've been assumed to be male all of the times I've been referred to by males (a small number, as I am so very new). In reality, I'm a sixteen year old girl.

I was in a similar situation not too long ago.

I had an iMac which Apple kindly exchanged for a MacBook.

Three months into having the MacBook i really realized it was not at the same level of amazing as the iMac.

It was grossly underpowered and had an embarrassing GPU for it's price (don't give me the laptop vs desktop crap, both use the same parts)

It's palm rests were starting to creak and lift up after three months of use.

It's screen looked like utter crap compared to most screens nowadays.

and it's excessive heat doing small tasks was killing my future kids.

I later sold the MacBook on Craigslist, bought a refurb iMac from Apple and have been happy since.

Stop being so angry, and next time buy AppleCare for it when you have problems like that, btw, it's $249 not 300

In Canada, it's $300.

Also, the problems are being repaired. You really don't get it, do you?

No, I get it. Yet, there is no reason to be a defensive and unreasonable jerk to everyone who responds to you. Get over it, stuff like this happens all the time. From my experience of owning many PCs over the years, I know you will not be immune to any of this stuff, and it will probably be worse. If it's being fixed, then there is no real issue, sell it if you like and be happy with your new computer and well sorry about your poor experience, but in the end it's a computer, not a life changing event.

I am only being a "jerk" to people who defend Apple like it's their infallible lover. :\

im very sorry about your bad experience, you have every right to be upset. i have seen the problem myself and find it very unappealing. its tough when you pay so much money for what seems like poor workmanship. but i have to emphasize that the majority of macbooks ive seen do not have this problem.

i understand that this problem is still recurring even after being addressed by apple multiple times. you are simply unhappy with the results, thus i have to conclude that the macbook just isnt the right solution for you.

please be mindful though that many people are happy with their apple products an they only wish that you can share their satisfaction. that is why people are telling you about their positive experiences; they believe in apple products and only want you to remain a part of the apple community. however, the way i see, at this point there is nothing apple or this forum can do to fix a design flaw and make you happy, all i can say is that i wish you the best with the dell xps.

I think you're all missing it, though ...

I don't want to stop using the Mac. The MacBook has its flaws, for sure; but I love OS X and I want to stick with Apple and see where they're headed. It just doesn't seem like they're interested in doing any more than the bare minimum to help me out, and it's a little upsetting.

I mostly just wanted to rant about my frustrating experience with Apple, but someone always has to be the White Knight. ;)

I want to apologize to the people I've been rude to in this thread. I'm just really frustrated and when people started coming in just to say, "Well, MINE works fine, maybe it's a problem with YOU," it sort of felt like rubbing salt in my wounds. I hope there's no hard feelings.

I really just want Apple to do something to make this right outside of just replacing the faulty parts for a second time. Hell, a stick of RAM would be appreciated (though I know a stick of RAM is worth about $700 to Apple).

I'm on the verge of selling my MacBook and never looking back. I love my iPods and iPhone, but I'm really disappointed in the computer.

I've had more problems than a "premium" computer should as well. Everything was fine out of the box. A few weeks into owning my MacBook, Tiger locked up (bought the MacBook in March of '07). Full system crash. I ignored it saying to myself "it happens" while ignoring the thought that XP never locked up.

Time went on and the random crashes every so often became a regular thing I had to deal with. Though Windows running in Boot Camp never crashed.

My DVD writer went bad. It was unable to write DVD-R/+R discs, but could write CD-Rs fine and read discs without a problem. The case started to discolor from regular use (despite washing my hands religiously and wiping it down with a soft damp cloth) and the plastic around the vent started to turn a noticeable shade of yellow and the casing on the hinge and around the vent started to separate.

So in August of last year, I sent it in for repair. A week later it was back in my hands. I was so happy to have it back. I happily ripped the box open and took the plastic off of the machine only to see that it had been scratched so bad that it looked like it was a 10 year old mistreated system. The casing had been replaced but the optical drive was untouched. Back it went. A week later it came back and, again, new casing but scratched up. The DVD writer had a "re-alignment" performed on it that essentially rendered it useless. Apple offered to replace at that point, so a week later I had a new MacBook in my hands. Took a total of 3 weeks.

Jump ahead to this year, end of January/beginning of Feb. I notice my battery has warped and the casing along the palmrest, right side, has started to separate and literally lift up from the case. Send it in. Comes back with a new case, same battery, both scratched as bad as the first one. Sent it back out. Comes back with a new case and new battery, both scratched to no end. Third times a charm.

For those keeping track, thats 6 weeks without my MacBook.

Diana S. took over my first case. She did a great job of trying to take care of things.

Nate D. Took over my second case and, also, did a good job. Before him, however, I had to deal with Ken Bell. Theres no polite way to describe the way he acted so I'll leave it at that.

While Apple's customer service did a good job, and I know that optical drives just die, the rest of the problems shouldn't have happened. The build quality of the MacBook shouldn't have resulted in discoloring or case separation. The repair facility shouldn't have scratched it up. For the price paid, I shouldn't have been without a Mac for 6 total weeks.

Theres the other issues too. OS X shouldn't randomly lock up the way it does. I've had both Tiger and Leopard randomly look up (Tiger on both Macs), while XP and Vista have not.

Then theres the fact that I could have gotten much better hardware. Just weeks after getting my MacBook I noticed I could have gotten something with a similar processor, more RAM, more HDD space, 17" screen, and a GeForce Go 7600 for $800. But of course I told myself "I have a Mac! It's better!" all while dealing with low -end hardware and endless random crashing every so often.

As I said at the beginning of my post, I love my iPods and iPhone. They're all fantastic. But Apple needs to shape up the Macs in a big way. They need to bring the build quality up to the same level as cheaper PCs. They need to bring the specs in-line too. Theres no reason for a $1099 notebook to have integrated graphics and a combo drive. It should be dedicated (at least a Radeon 3470 for 13.3", with HDMI out) and a DVD writer. The MacBook "Pro" should have its price reduced by about $800 and be shipping with a GeForce 9600M GT 512MB by now, along with an option for $200 blu-ray upgrade (which the MacBook should have as an option as well).

This will be the only Mac I own unless Apple does what I listed above, and gets OS X up to spec. This is 2008, no reason for random crashing.

This is pretty much exactly what I'm bitter about.

And even in terms of "luxury-brand" fashion PCs, the Vaio SR is what the MacBook should be.

I'm sorry to hear about the awful experience you made after looking forward to getting a mac for years before. It's a shame that you should get one of the relatively few macbooks affected by this problem.

So what do you intend to do now.. get a PC?

I'm not really in a financial situation to get a new computer, even if I do sell the MacBook. So, I will probably ride out the MacBook for a few more years and when it's time to buy a new computer, I likely won't go Apple again.

I got so emotionally invested in getting a Mac as a teenager, and when I finally got one it was honestly a little crushing to have so many issues. :(

I really hate to read that you are having an awful experience with your MacBook purchase. Your complaints about the cracks are legitimate as I have experience them myself on my Core Duo MacBook. Apple has had to replace my topcase more than once but this last replacement has been going strong for more than a year without fail.

I hope you change your mind and let Apple repair your MacBook since the problems you are having are fixable. However, your collective posts seem to indicate that nothing short of a replacement MacBook is going to change your mind. You have a legitimate reason for being disappointed in Apple and if that makes you want to switch back to a Windows machine, then so be it. Switch and be happy. Apple can't be everything to everyone.

Lastly, I hope you take it easy on the people sharing their positive experiences and asking you to reconsider because getting angry at them won't solve your MacBook problems any more than them coming in and "apologizing" for Apple.

Good luck on your next move - be it a repair or a new computer (Windows or OS X)

I can understand that, and when something's been chilled with that much disappointment the fact that it's an uncommon occurrence probably won't do anything in the way of cheering you up. It's a bit like being let down by someone you considered your idol for years. Thereafter it doesn't matter how many cool things he may still do, there goes your idol!
I've only once before had real bad experiences with a computer I got, but then again I suppose its nothing like your situation because I never much wanted it to start off with :p
On the topic of mac.. how do you like the operating system?

I absolutely adore OS X, the thought of leaving it for Windows terrifies me. :(

Honestly, have you had such terrible experiences with Windows? I must be one of the lucky ones then
There's still the option of wiping the drive and putting a Linux distro of your choosing on it. Ubuntu is apparently the easiest one to install and also the one they recommend for starters, though I'd recommend RedHat over it, somehow. Or, being a proud European, SUSE! :)

Have you tried to email Jobs? His (or supposed his) email address is all over the board. Just do a search. A lot of people have gotten positive things from doing that. How about calling customer service and talking to a manager. The worse they can say is no. Write letters to them. Tell them everything that went wrong. Tell them you love OS X, but you had numerous trouble with the hardware. You might be given a satisfactory solution.

Dybbuk,

I read your experience and it is an unfortunate one. I am really sorry to hear that this happened to you, but at the same time I have to tell you that your story sounds somewhat suspect. Please don't be quick to get offended.

The reason I say your story sounds a little suspect is because I work in IT at a fairly large media company that deploys 95% Mac computers of various models. Among those Macs there are about 40 MacBooks distributed company-wide. The problems you have had with cracking wrist rests and foundation cracking is virtually non-existent @ my company and we've purchased and deployed MacBooks from their introduction. Let me add that we have our share of irresponsible MacBook abusers and I have yet to see any of the symptoms you described. There is one particular user who sits his MacBook in such a precarious position on his desk and drops it OFTEN. I put "often" in caps because the dude is plain annoying. Now his desk is about 4 foot high and he sits on a high stool. His MacBook casing (palm rests and bottom and everything) are totally in tact with no cracks! There are scratches, but no cracks whatsoever.

I do believe your story, but I must also conclude that something else must be going on that you're not aware of... perhaps the temperature of the environment where the computer resides? Or maybe you've got some mischievous kids who like to tinker with your MacBook when you're not looking?? I dunno. But in either case, what you've described is not the norm at my job. Don't know what to tell you, but I'm sorry to hear of your woes.

Take heart in that most people don't have the issues you've had so maybe your next MacBook or MacBook Pro will be a better experience. Don't give up just yet.

Does this not suggest to you that perhaps his macbook more likely fell through the cracks in quality control, than anything else?

You said one of your colleagues drops his from a 4ft desk with no consequences; unless his kids are putting it under his car tyres before he reverses our for work in the morning, I'm not sure it's likely his is getting worse treatment.

As an aside; why do threads like this bring out the jaded underbelly of macrumors? The OP was nothing but pleasant until numerous posters gave him a hard time about posting his troubles - in a thread clearly titled as such; they could only have opened the thread to berate him.

Comments such as 'waahhhh baby, I'm glad you were sold a lemon' do nothing but make the author look very, very silly, and the board a very, very unpleasant place to spend time reading.

Good luck OP; I hope the repairs are to your satisfaction. My brothers macbook has both palmrests cracked (and it never leaves his desk!), my friend just got his dead Macbook battery replaced, and I'm on my second MBP battery and third charging brick, but I still love Apple. I can, though, understand exactly how you feel.

I have a palmrest crack (2nd time) and a new one top-left of the screen enclosure (so basically, same as you).

My friend has the palm rest crack, it is literally the EXACT same size as mine. Also, the start of the top-left crack is appearing on his.

I'm getting it fixed next week, so I can sell it off and hopefully get a revised MBP.

I wish Apple would release OS X. Its nothing to do with price, I'm more than willing to pay the price, I just wish Apple would make computers that freaking work.

1 minute and counting until a fanboy spews out the software is optimised for the hardware myth.

Two lessons learned.

OP:

Whether your next computer is Mac or PC, you now know two things:

1) Buy the extended warranty

2) Make regular backups.

Michael
