I am keeping my iPhone, but I will also buy the new Galaxy Note 3 because of the screen size.

Apple is not regressing. What they are doing is taking advantage of a customer base that believes Apple knows better than they do. As a result Apple knows that all they need to do is make small incremental changes which cost very little, and they'll continue to make huge profits.

Because Apple has a cult like customer following they will brag about, and contribute to Apples massive profits as though they were personally benefiting from this business model. A unique situation unlike any other company, Apples sheer brilliance in how they influence & control their customers is to be admired.

Or, you know, people choose iOS devices out of their own free will, not because they're part of a "cult".

I like that explanation better.

Funny, other manufacturers keep losing me as a customer for making tablets with shoddy software instead of phones.

I like the 4 inch iphone 5 but would not mind a 4.3 inch iphone only if its still on the same identical iphone 5 form factor. Wider, than its a no go for me.

“Study finds 20% of Apple iPhone users switched away from Android in past year”

“Apple, though, has been particularly successful in luring users away from the Android mobile operating system to its own iOS platform.”

Read a few threads where the posters have said, "Apple is failing" Apple is stagnating" Apple is not innovative" "Apple is this that and the other thing", But Apple does what Apple does best. They are not listening to smartphone fanatics, but to a larger audience, and builds a phone that fits, and can be used by most with one hand. That is what Tim Cook said last year when the iphone 5 was released.

However, this rant will continue for a good while, never will it end, and when the iphone 5S is released, members will complain about the iPhone 6 and so on. Human nature  ;)

If you want a larger phone, you still have choices. You can choose between a larger screen or a better os. That's the beauty of competition in the USA.

I've actually owned both the top end Android phones and almost every iteration of the iPhone. I still keep coming back to the iPhone for its superior user experience. That said, I think a slight bump in screen size to maybe 4.3" wouldn't hurt. The screen IS a bit tiny. The mega Android phones suffer from screens that are definitely too big for one handed use. But I think 4.3" would be a nice middle ground.

They don't sell a larger screen phone because there are not a ton of people who actually want them, otherwise the iPhone would be doing much worse. Personally I wish they would give us an option of going back to the old iPhone screen size as that was much nicer.

And yet you keep coming back to us.

Do not resist brother. It will be easier this way. :D

$$$. Drop the price, open the floodgates of success.

Apple is even smarter than that.

Sell the recycled iPhone 5, reduce production costs, add color options as the hook, increase margins, make an extra hundred million in profit, and increase market share in the midrange demographic.

Pleased its an iphone 5s

Because it'll save me money in that I wont be tempted to change my phone this year.

Apple lives by Steve Jobs legacy i.e we never give people what they want, people don't know what they want, we have to tell them what they want.
Btw; I don't know where you live, but in Europe, Asia and Australia more and more people moving away from iPhones and buy larger screen phones from other manufacturers.
There were no line ups for iPhone 5 release last year in Australia and one could just walk in to any Apple retailer or telco and buy it.
I'm suspecting it will be even worse this year.

The competition gives us choice.
Apple seems to want to get rid of it of its customers.

so according to you, your option is better than a calculated one made by overeducated executives who make more money than you can count

there is a reason why Apple does this.

Europe suffered supply problems of the iPhone 5 early on and believe it or not there were queues at most Apple stores especially in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain etc. Australia has a small population in comparison to the main European countries so perhaps popularity is different. Considering worldwide sales for the iP5 were up when compared to previous releases, I can't see any evidence to suggest less people are buying them. Android sales are up but that doesn't mean Apple are struggling.

People here are missing the point. To all the close-minded posters who don't want a phablet, it's not all about you. It's also not all about those who are like the OP and just want a slightly larger screen. Everyone has different needs and wants, and after having had the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 and (until recently) the iPhone 5, I too wanted a somewhat larger screen, but was dismayed that Apple didn't appear to have a larger screen iPhone 5-something coming this fall. Everything I've read says Android sales are overtaking iPhone sales. Could it be that people want a larger screen? I find the iPhone 5 screen too small after having used it for 5 months. That's 5 months of hitting the wrong buttons on the tiny screen, mistyping practically everything I type, etc. So, I bought a 5" Android phone and while I can honestly say the iPhone has a better OS, the size of the Android phone is great. The screen is absolutely beautiful. And, I can actually configure the phone how *I* want it, and use apps that I actually want, not just apps that Apple deems I can have (Wi-fi utility apps, for example, so now I don't need to carry an android tablet to do my job). There is something between an iPhone 5 and a phablet--a 5" phone is not a phablet. A Note II, yes, but not a 5" phone.

I doubt I am alone in being disappointed that the best Apple could come out with this fall is a "S" version and a cheap version. The cheap version is sure to dilute a brand that up to now has been expensive, sexy and trendy.

If/when Apple decides to "innovate" something special again, I'll come back. But for now, with the Snapdragon 800 chip coming out in new phones with speed and features beyond anything else, you guys just enjoy your cheap 5C's while I enjoy Wireless AC, USB 3.0 and super-powerful quadcore performance from my phone.

It's not that you're alone, it's that you're not in the majority. Apple makes one phone that appeals to the mass of the market. The fact that they have not yet decided to try and carve up smaller niche markets is not as big of a deal to them. The "low-cost" iPhone or whatever it's suppose to be is how they crack the Chinese market, which is not a small market. It's much larger than the US market. So by having 2 iPhones they are are addressing the two largest markets.

I would love a larger iPhone. I switched from my iPhone 5 so I could have a phone with a larger screen. I miss my iPhone, but it is what it is at the moment. I also acknowledge that the 5"+ market is a niche and something Apple may not do for a long time and I'm okay with that, it's their decision.

You guys know that you can make a device with a larger screen but physically be smaller?

I found it embarrassing Apple came up with the iPhone 5. I was truly expecting a Mororola Razr M approach. It has similar dimensions as an iPhone 5 with a 4.3" screen. I thought the iPhone 5 was going to be the same as the 4/4S in size but with a 4" screen. Motorola can do it but Apple can't?

Look at the s3 to s4. The s4 got a bigger screen on a smaller phone. That's win win. Everyone gets what they want, big screen and smaller phone.

I don't have a problem with the screen size (I'm still using a 4S) but I think this whole "phone is too big to fit in your pocket" is getting a little old. Sure maybe the Note series but that's to be expected, even then its a stretch but I'm not judging peoples outfits. If you can get an iPhone 5 in your pocket then you can fit a .51" x .44" x .01" bigger S4 in your pocket. A iPhone 5 with a lifeproof case is larger then a S4 in most dimensions. How in the world are people fitting them in their pockets and using them one handed?! Lol

Many of us don't want a larger phone - it's a phone not a tablet.
Why cheaper because many can't afford - especially in other parts of the world the current iPhone prices. You serve the market you want to serve. Apple already has a cheaper phone - they still sell the iPhone 4 and just continuing that tradition.

If they made the iPhone the size of the current Android - I'd find another phone to buy.
This. I am using my 4S as my main phone right now instead of my Nexus 4. I have grown bored over the Nexus 4.

For bigger screens, I have my iPad Mini and a Nexus 7. Keeps my phone nice and small where I can take it with me everywhere I go without looking like a dork talking to a tablet.

Why do Android manufacturers only offer cheap phones or big screens? I actually find Android lacking in choice.

Last year I was interested in trying Android. Everyone was talking about the great os and hardware choice. I'm typically only interested in high end devices. I also prefer a smaller device. The 3.5" iPhones are great for me. If anything I'd like the iPhone 4 size in a smaller body. I looked for a high end Android that met this criteria. Guess what? It didn't seem to exist.

Generally, packing more computing power into a smaller unit is a sign of technological advancement. Are Android manufacturers incapable of doing this? It seems like try are behind the curve in compact flagship smartphones.

Currently Android devices (certain ones of course) have the highest screen size to physical size ratio. And don't quote me but I think windows phones are second. So your last paragraph isn't very accurate unless you meant across the board...

i went from a 4 --> 5 and I can't go back. Even the 5 for me right now is too small.

i remember all the crying about how no one would buy the iPhone 5 if it had a larger screen...looks like people did.
