You're missing the point.
Most people do not have any use for the SD-card slot, hence they removed it. For those few that need it, there's an adapter for it - which should be much faster than the previously built-in SD-card reader.

For the record, connecting the camera via USB-C (either TB3 or USB 3.1) should be much much faster than SD-card.

USB 3 isn't a USB port.
The problem isn't that other companies aren't using USB 3, it's that they aren't using USB-C type port. Why aren't you mad at them for selling you out of date hardware (and if you're a photographer you probably even payed quite a lot for that outdated hardware)?!
This is a silly argument. For the record I don't have a big issue with the USB-C ports. Also I didn't buy my USB 3 drives recently so why should I be mad at the companies I bought from? All the drives and perifrals I have that are USB 3 were bought within the last 2+ years.

Also I wasn't arguing the merits of USB 3 vs USB-C. I was simply stating that using the SD card was much faster than using WiFi and it was very convenient to have the SD card slot.

I think there would have been a lot less angst if Apple gave us 3 USB-C/TB ports, one USB 3 port and left the SD card slot in place for one more year. Give your users the opportunity to start moving over to the new ports without forcing them to. There's a lot to be said for convenience and having to have to not only buy dongles and adapters you now have to remember to take them with you.

Of course eventually my drives and other things will be USB-C but even one USB 3 port would would have given me more time to evaluate how to proceed.

They are aware that removing legacy ports creates angst. They heard complaints about the floppy, optical drive, headphone port, etc. They have always pushed the market forward in this area and are willing to trade off some short term complaining about it. They are really the only company that has the power to do this because they are the only company selling computers that run MacOS and devices that run iOS. The Windows PC market has too much competition, so they typically have to stay with the status quo, which is where people are content, but it doesn't push forward new and better technologies (though, it is nice to see that Microsoft has taken some risks).

Apple makes all these type of decisions for the future of computing. It hurts for a while, which is why I am still using a 2011 MBP because I wanted to keep the optical drive (though, I have since removed it and put in SSD). It is your choice to decide whether you prefer the numerous options that Windows PCs offer or whether you want to live with the decisions that Apple makes for you. Personally, I would like Pencil input on the MBP. I would like it to dual boot to iOS, be able to remove the screen and use it as a tablet, and be able to remove the keyboard with Touch Bar and use it with my iMac. We can't always have what we want.

People, just don't buy it then. Its over. Its not gonna change so why keep complaining lol. It isn't your call how they build their computers. Don't like it don't buy it. Competition is a good thing, support a competitor. Nobody really cares.
You should make a rubber stamp out of this post, because there are many threads in the forums that need your reply!

What if apple had one or 3 usb-C depending on 13 or 15 inch model and one express slot like the older Pros.

Before you roast me...

I'm for progress but this is bit too fast to remove all the old styled ports in one swoop.

I have found and am about to order a SD card reader, a usb 3.0 two port card and a 128GB SSD that will all use this slot and sit flush with body of my 15 and 17 inch macbook pros.

Yes adapters still but sit flush and can be left inside the mac when moving about.

If they left an express slot on the pro line then it is more flexible and more adaptable to the pro user?

ok so agree usb-c is much faster for data transfer.
but express cards are cheaper.

Photographers are one type of pro's. I must've missed the part where it said it was called Macphoto Pro. Removing the SD-card slot is great!

Just the way you are cool with removal of the SD card slot, some filthy rich will be cool with the "cheap" price of the MBP while you would think it as a rather disproportionate increase. Just because you do not use a slot or do not find its absence particularly cumbersome, does not mean others do not.

Lower weight and smaller profile.
You have to be kidding. The lower weight of the new MBP is almost exclusively due to the smaller batteries. And they could have easily designed the case to fit HDMI and USB type A without making it thicker overall (remember that the vertical sides do not reflect the total thickness). Not to mention that 2mm are not exactly a huge difference.
But it is funny how you don't care how much a laptop weighs, but refuse to carry a bag. By your definition of "pro", shouldn't you be prepared to carry the extra weight?
What the heck are you talking about? I never said I didn't care about the weight. There is no significant correlation between usable ports and weight. You're just dreaming up more excuses for boneheaded design choices.

Follow the money

People who would of bought MBP but won't because of missing SDcard -$profit
People who will buy MPB anyway +$profit
People who wouldn't buy MBP but will now because slightly smaller or lighter +$profit
Mfg costs and engineering time not spent adding SDcard +$profit

What give the maximum $ to Apple.

You nailed it!
My point was exactly that. Just because some people (very vocal people) here at Macrumors have been complaining about the removal of the SD-card, others won't be bothered at all by it - myself included!

So good for you :)

True. Always the situation. Some people who do not use a particular thing won't mind its absence, while some relying on it will get angry. Always the case!
