Quite simply, there is little difference between what I need my iPhone 5 to do and what the latest iPhone would offer that I actually need.

I don't need or desire Apple Pay. And I don't need or want a larger phone.

Sure the newer phones may be faster. But I really can't remember ever waiting for my iPhone 5 to finish a task.

Sure the new phones may be 64-BIT. But that hasn't translated into being something that has made my 32-BIT phone incapable of anything I need.

I really would be completely unable to find any reason to buy a new iPhone other than being able to say I have the newest iPhone. Which in my life would amount to being a worthless point.

In reality, we've reached a point where the needs have been met for many years. And there hasn't been a new feature introduced that grabs my attention and makes me dream of having that feature.

I really couldn't even imagine what feature could compel me to upgrade from my iPhone 5. It does everything I need. And is capable of more than I want to do with my phone.

It's just really hard to imagine any point coming that I'm going to wish I had the latest iPhone.

About the only thing that might create that need, would be if Apple required all developers to abandon support for 32-BIT iPhones so that our favorite apps would cease to function.

But, if Apple did that, I'd likely switch to Android just because I'd view that as dirty tactics and would make me view Apple quite negatively.

Kind of like back in the 80's when Apple pulled the plug rather abruptly on the Apple II series. They expected that'd force us to migrate to the Mac. But, those of us who had invested thousands of dollars into the Apple II series (like the latest IIgs) felt quite betrayed. So... we said f#%€ you too, and switched to IBM PC's. Which actually worked to our benefit in the end. And Apple to this day has never recovered the market share that they lost in the computer industry.

So.. if they pull a similar tactic with iOS, they better be ready for the backlash that'll come from those of us who will likely be forever lost. Those of us who may have eventually upgraded to newer iPhones would likely bail completely and switch to Android like we did back in the 80's to PC's.

Ok... clarification, Apple II series discontinued in 1992 and 1993. But my point is still the same.

Anyway, hopefully Apple won't try to force us to upgrade. As stated that'd be bad. But hopefully they will have some amazing idea that'll make people like me desire a new phone.

32-bit will probably be discontinued with ios 11/12, the 5 will not get 10.3.2 and app makers are already starting to drop support for ios 9 so I can forsee within the next year or so 32-bit being dropped.

Which matters if you need to update apps. Not so much if your usage doesn't require that.

You guys upgrading every other year just need to get on the iPhone Upgrade Program and stop worrying about when to upgrade or not. Otherwise why not wait until the 2020 iPhone when they redesign the iPhone again and it will be an even newer new?

Now That We know that Apple might be doing iPhone 8 - 8plus in 2018, its even more crucial to wait for that more refine version than the one now in 2017.

As for me, I'm still running a 6 plus and I don't feel like waiting another year.
Then why didn't you upgrade in the fall? It's going to cost you the same now as it would have then, except now you're paying the same for an older phone when you can just wait a couple more months.

Well make fun all you want, while you all get the new version I'll stick with the iPhone 7s plus, which I'll promise will have better battery and no surprise bugs like your refresh will.

For those who bought the 6 or 6S version, it should hv been great bc it nearly resemble the 7 n most likely the 7S too. That means Your 6 and 6S still look the latest except for the antenna lines, jack, camera size, at a glance they look the same as 7. If you really want a completely redesign the 8 would be the one to go for , that is what all the rumors came out so far. So you hv a choice, take the 7S which most likely be the same design as the 7 but upgraded specs or take the 8, no bezel, glass back cover, new colors, bigger and oled screen, integrated home button and may be also the fps. I will wait for 2018 since i bought the 7 and I will keep it at least 2-3 years.

Everybody seems to be so concern for a new redesign, but as we seen b4 redesign iPhones come with problems until the S version comes out. In 2018 we will most likely get a iPhone 8 plus. This year will be most likely a waste of money unless you get the iPhone 7s due to it being the most refine model of its series. I'll be getting an iPhone 7s plus, or I'll be waiting another year and get the inevitable iPhone 8 plus that will be more thought out and bigger than the 2017 one.

I'm not waiting because for the first time ever I delayed an upgrade when the 7 came out as I was pissed off at the removal of the headphone jack.

Now it seems Apple are are going to carry on with no jack for the X, so I'll have to just suck it up.

Not waiting any longer as I'm on a 6.

I want it to be redesigned like the S8

Agreed.

I'd be interested in a S8 style screen design in the size of a iphone 7/6 with the body similar to the iphone 5.

The body of the X is rumoured to be more similar to the 4S.

Glass front and back with a steel band. Although the steel band is rounded off so it's more flush with the glass.

Apple with every hardware iteration improves the battery life. And your battery will already be over a year old by then with lots of charge/discharge cycles so I really doubt your old phones battery will be better than the new one.
The new hardware is always faster and runs the new iOS better than the old and as far as bugs those are not guaranteed to be there but if there is any they will correct them like they always do.

Someone always says this..why not wait for the S? Then...why not wait for the next model? Problem is there's always something new next year. If you follow this logic then you'll always be waiting...

Ultimately, this might hurt Apple if people continue to keep the mindset you have. Which there's nothing wrong with that, it's just indicative that the price point of the iPhone continues to rise and others are feeling that the features are not justifying the price point.

This is reason enough for Apple to continue to improve software and hardware related features, and not allow the iPhone to plateau where the consumer feels no need to upgrade.

You are wright I wish I can buy every year but I dont have the money for it

I am definitely holding out until at least early 2019. Super happy with my iP7+ and even happier with my iPad Pro which I use a lot more than the phone now. If I could trade in the iP7+ for an SE and 10.5" with minimal outlay, I'd do that in a heartbeat. I do not use all of the bells and whistles on the phone, so the latest and greatest does not apply to me anyway.

Besides, if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I want an Apple Product that I can be productive on. Granted, I get that some folks use their phones extensively and do not buy iPads.

Everyone's needs or wants are different, understanding my use case now, buying a + sized phone going forward will be overkill.

As far as design, IDC. If it works the way it is designed to, great.
