I think its more one of those, use what their friends use, kinda thing

They’re not going to be happy using an app just to communicate with one person

Speaking for someone with a huge majority of my friends living overseas, iMessage is the one absolute must have for any OS. Sure you can get third party apps, but they're just that - third party - which is a total nuisance when you have to get everyone to download them. iMessage "just works".

iMessage tends to only be big in the states and some parts of the UK. Most other countries I know use the other services mentioned. if you have iMessage you receive messages faster, don't need to have a data plan or a text plan, sends higher rate photos and videos much faster and group chats are better and the main issue is texts between Android and iOS often get lost...Especially if you're in group chats. People with iMessage will get every text while it is not the same for a person with an Android in that group chat.

It's all well and good if all of your friends and family also use iPhones. If you have any contacts using Android, iMessage still can't be your one and only messaging solution anyway. That's why 3rd party apps like Facebook Messenger and What's App are incredibly popular, in my experience at least. They're cross-platform.

I would say 1/3 of  users don't actually like ios but iMessage is hard to give up. I've been meeting and seeing more people say they only stay for iMessage. Once  allows that new type of messaging to go through I think they will lose a lot of people.
Basically. If it weren't for iMessage, I'd probably definitely be getting one of the new Pixels. Otherwise, I'm not sure yet.

Getting friends/family to dowload a third party app that is cross platform would probably be easier than getting friends/family to buy Apple devices just for the convenience of iMessage.

Fortunately, my mom went iPhone a long time ago.

But I have friends and family using multiple devices. iMessage or SMS/MMS it really doesn't matter. I text them in the form they will receive it in.

I even have friends who have Apple devices but all their messages are SMS/MMS.

PS. I don't use third party messaging apps, for precisely the reason you mention.

No, you misunderstand me.

I am using 14 year old technology because it works for me. But I do NOT expect current features to work with it. That wasn't my point.

My point was to say that Apple's ecosystem is held up as this great thing, this one advantage Apple has over everyone else. But it isn't. At least I don't see it that way. Third party services go a long way in closing the gap on that.

So, the argument that Apple's ecosystem is this wonderful thing that levels any counterarguments just doesn't apply in my case.

But especially so because none of the devices I use could utiize any of that anyway.

The fact that I CAN use new features with 14 year old devices through third party services does I think say something though. And that is that Apple's 'advantage' with their ecosystem is not really an advantage at all.
Got it.

I still think a lot of us prefer the integration though. I know I definitely do.

There are also lots of other things though, one of them being continuity which I use on a daily basis.

iCloud syncs everything across all my devices automatically. Pictures, Music, music playlists, Messages, safari tabs, Notes, etc etc.

To ME there is an advantage to being in the Apple ecosystem that I think a lot of other people also appreciate.

iOS is like Mac OS X. The UI fundamentals haven't changed because they don't need to – Apple got it right the first time.

Also will add that I used to have my iPhone jailbroken, but kind of lost interest lately. Apple has in fact taken lots of inspiration from the jailbreak community both recently and in the early days, and added those features to iOS; although there are still some things you can't do on stock iOS (namely customization), I am honestly fine with stock iOS.

From that perspective I'm with you.

I will not claim because I cannot that third party services can mimmick everything Apple's ecosystem provides. And there are things I cannot do without a jailbreak.

But for the most part a large chunk of things can be reasonably emulated.

Unfortunately, what is a feature to you and to many courtesy of the Apple ecosystem tends to be something I am either not interested in or don't have a use for.

I'm sure if I had modern equipment though I could probably find a reason. :D

Whey get excited about any phone?

iOS is getting its biggest update in years. It's not the same old iOS.

I get excited about cars and it takes years to get any changes. Perspective.

Same here. I used t jailbreak up until iPhone 6 I think.. Maybe even before, can't remember.

It was great in the beginning but eventually the whole OS used to become super unstable to the point that I had to end up restoring. Probably my fault for installing too many tweaks but still, haven't found a reason to jailbreak in years.

YMMV, but my experience leaving behind iMessage looked something like this:

I got my Android device, set it up. I sent a text to my friend...

And then I moved on with my life.

A text message is a text message. Whether delivered through Apple's servers via LTE, or whether delivered through your carrier's SMS technology, your text message will reach your recipient's phone nonetheless.

My intent isn't to sound smug, rather, to inform anyone that is on the fence.

What makes iOS 11 the biggest update in years to iOS for the phone specifically ? Just curious. Seems lackluster to me over 10

iOS 11, seems more like iOS 10.5. What's so radically new ? I must have missed those features.

New drag and drop functionality, new file manager, new control center, new dock (on iPads, and possibly iPhone X). Those features alone make it the biggest change since iOS 7 in my opinion.

Well, I think my carrier is slightly different now, but it used to cost me 50 cents for each international text sent and received. I also had similar reports from the recipients running up their phones bills to keep in contact with me. Obviously now we have more options, so that isn't so much an issue anymore, but it's how/why iMessage became so integrated for me.

Is skeumorphism coming back?

Removal of white everywhere?

That would be something I could get excited for with iOS!

For me the new file system alone qualifies as a big improvement.
Oh…sorry!

…new file manager…
Just curious why this is a new feature now when for 10 versions of iOS Apple has been trying to HIDE the file system?

Is it another one of those features that became a feature because Apple made it so, or is it because people want it as a feature?

If the latter, I find it very interesting that jailbreaking has provided access to the file system for years while many people have opposed jailbreaking - yet want a file system they could have had via jailbreak.

Strange.

Note, I am not attacking, just asking a question then musing about a possible answer.

Most stale argument that we have to hear year in and year out, and yet Apple will still sell well over 100M new iPhones over the course of the next year, because the new phones provide more than enough changes in hardware and software to warrant an upgrade.

The question of "why don't they include options that have been available in jailbreaks for years" is easy to answer. Because only .01% of the population cares about dark mode or being able to move an icon or folder into a random spot. Pretty much nobody cares, literally.

AND, all leaks so far indicate significant improvements in both hardware and software...sorry if you can't move your folder onto the bottom of a blank page.

Because everybody has different preferences of what they are anticipating for this new iPhone. Boring to you, is not boring to others. Given this is going to be in all new redesign, it's the capabilities and features that enhance iOS to make the user experience better. It's just subjective to what others appreciate or not.

While Tig Bitties is entitled to their opinion, they do bring up important points. iOS is too slow to implement important features. Why did it take till iOS 11 to add a file system? For some big 10th anniversary update, offering a "Fischer Price" UI for years on end isn't really taking iOS to the next level. iOS doesn't take advantage of the + model's 5.5" display generation after generation. What's the point of a bigger screen if you do not maximize it? To say "oh, we can make a 1080p iPhone?" The iPhone 7+ should offer split-screen multi-tasking. Simple as that.

It seems like the iPhone X could be overhyped because of the sticker price and the catching up it will do while compromising up and down the new design. Losing Touch ID is a bitter pill to swallow for many. Anyways, iOS isn't immune to criticism. It is lacking in features and requires compromises, which is why it's successful. It's meant to be basic and bare bones. People do not care for the compromises they make with iOS because it means having a trendy device, a phone that works for a long time, and a strong brand behind it. iOS' notification system is clunky as hell and using iTunes is a PITA.

Conversely, most people don't care about the technical aspects of faster processors or bigger cameras. Ask these people what "A" chip powers their iPhone and they'd have no clue. Most wouldn't even know that it's an Apple designed chip. Nor would they care.

But you're right. The same 99.99% that doesn't care about jailbreaking also doesn't care about the technical aspects discussed here all the time in this forum either.

Good for you.

However, it's not that easy for those of us who have an iPhone and other Apple devices like Macs or iPads and who don't want to have to download third-party options to get our messages on all our devices. And yes, this matters when my phone is in another room and charging and I'm using my Mac or iPad.

I always find it interesting that people leave their phones in other rooms.

Personally, my device is always with me. Either sitting on the arm of the couch next to me or in a designated place wherever I happen to be.

My wife, who is technically challenged always carries her phone with her as well, even if she's just going to the kitchen it's in a pocket.

We never turn them off and my wife gets irritated if my phone is NOT with me because she often texts me from the other room.

Everyone is different of course.

Yes, it is the same iOS. It's meant to be the tenth year anniversary of the iPhone and iOS 1. Instead of getting a UI overhaul, more productivity features, better notifications like Android has, and other iPad features, we get a halfassed update for the iPhone. The iOS 11 update for iPad helped increase its longevity and usefulness.

I only like iMessage, faster app updates, and the software/hardware support Apple provides. Outside of that, iOS looks too cartoonish, has a crappy notification system, hiccups on the 7+, doesn't offer enough productivity software features the iPad has, relies on iTunes too much, and isn't customizable enough. Where are themes on iOS? I don't want Blue's Clues as the UI.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

You win the internet sir!

I've often described iOS 7/8/9/10 as Fisher Price/PlaySkool inspired (primary color unicorn puke) but the Blues Clues UI takes it!!!! :D

The iPhone has been the Fisher Price phone for the Grandmas and teens for years now. Just shocked with the brand new groundbreaking iPhone X, that Apple didn't choose this time, to finally update and revise the stale looking "My Little Pony" iOS theme they've been rocking since iOS 7.

But hey, different strokes for different folks. If you like the Disney style that is iOS, that's cool. I don't, and with the X it would have been the perfect time to revise it,
