I come to the forums usually once a year at this time to read the discussions and get an idea of what is going on in the cell phone world before I make my yearly pilgrimage to the Apple store to trade my money for their newest offering.

This year I’m a little blown away by the negativity expressed on MR. I’m growing old, aren’t we all, but I sure miss the days of excitement and whatnot surrounding the new lineup. This year is nothing terribly new with Apple and their devices - The same thing has happened over the years, incremental updates with some years better than others. Yet I sense a trend online with way too much cynical bomb chucking at each other. It’s too bad. It seems to happen all over the place as we try to out gripe and out complain each other.

I’m always impressed at Apple’s ability to make this many devices, with incredible precision, delivery times, stellar customer support, all with such tightly integrated hardware/software. This kind of product, produced at this level of sophistication is nothing short of amazing.

Anyway, from one fan to the next, I wish you all a fun fall season. Enjoy the phone you have With anticipation for 2020, or upgrade to the new one if you want, enjoy the process. It’s a great time to be alive, and we are all incredibly blessed beyond measure. While not life changing technology, I like the new offerings. The new cameras are a great feature, as are the improvements in battery life, screen brightness, and Face ID speed/length/angle. These will solve my biggest wishes with the current X/XS platform.

All the best,

Roxysdad

I agree. It sounds like many here are personally slighted at what Apple decided to put out this year. Like Apple somehow “owes” whatever features to them.

Apple will put out whatever they put out. I imagine Apple has these products planned at least five years into the future. If Apple doesn’t release what you want this year, fine. Be mature and just decide to stay with what you have or move to a different platform if you feel that strongly towards it. But all this “Apple needs to fail,” “Blah blah Jobs,” etc. reeks of immature whining.

I agree with you about the vitriol, I come here to keep up what's new and what's a problem. I think alot of users join this forum just to complain and knock Apple. Valid complaints point to ongoing problems that deserve Apple's attention. As a stock holder, Apple has done well for me, even in my small portfolio. Made enough today to get a new Series 5 watch!

Apple has always used memory size as the upsell for higher profit. This has been their business model forever.
Features that many are asking for such as the inductive charging are gimmicky and would be used very rarely and quickly forgotten.

The image processing and camera features are innovative. The custom cpu, incredible screen and enhanced Face ID are leagues better then the competition.
I totally believe it’s a worthy upgrade to even last year’s models. I’m glad Apple is continuing to try and differentiate themselves from the competition and not just hit check boxes on features and specs that don’t mean much in everyday use.

To put it simply, the iPhone isn’t as exciting as it used to be in the days when we really didn’t know what to expect. It used to be ‘the iPhone launch’ whereas now there is a full range of iPhones. People also seem to be less enthusiastic about Apples latest and greatest because it’s aimed at such a small segment of the market due to it costing upwards of £1100.

Don’t blame MR, blame a mature market and fewer people upgrading which ultimately leads to criticism and negativity. The last great buzz that I witnessed was in 2014 with the iPhone 6. Those days are gone now sadly.

To echo @The-Real-Deal82 ..

There is so little actual variety in the lineup now that it's become very niche on the interest side.

Every model is "big, bigger and huge" and basically all the same device, save for an extra camera and some ancillary little details.

As an SE user, I'd really love some true variety in the size & offering way beyond what they have now.

The other day I was near an Apple store and popped in and was amazed to see ROWS of iPhones set up for trying out and they are all just nearly the same device. I guess this is what they want.. just make everyone choose on price only - but even there it's basically all "expensive" on up to "obscene".

It's just become sort of boring to normal consumers. The colors are the most interesting things and they don't really even have enough good ones of those.

Maybe a lot of the negative comments from people are the result of people finally getting tired of the overblown hype from a company that hasn't really offered anything innovative aside from taking things AWAY from their products for so long and stating that this is what their customers want as if they know better than what you or I know we want.
At least that's the problem that I have with them.
I found it very amusing that some of the biggest cheers came yesterday when it was mentioned that the new phone would be available in yellow. If people feel they need to cheer something like that, I start to question the integrity of the entire event or the intelligence of the people doing the cheering.
Wayyyy too much hype Apple! Fact is these new iphones really offer very little if anything over their predecessors. Ultra wide camera lens? OMG, try shooting with a real camera and then comment on how much of a breakthrough this is (or isn't). Frankly these cameras have now achieved capabilities of cameras that most serious photographers would consider to be on the level of a toy no matter who Apple convinced to ooh and aah over them. 4k 60p video? Well maybe there might be SOMETHING to that if there wasn't so much aliasing going on in the videos it produces. I stopped using video cameras that bad a decade ago. Faster processors than ever before? I wonder which benchmark app will be used to even detect a noticeable difference from last year's lineup as no one actually using the phones will notice a thing.
As I said in another thread yesterday, the thing that would impress ME wouldn't be these stupid features meant for 16 year olds, but a phone which could actually reliably hold onto a weak signal in a remote area and do so with decent audio quality where you could actually understand what the person you're trying to talk to was saying. But I guess I am just in the minority as most people no longer buy cell phones to actually use as phones. And for all this we get to pay premium prices...and for what? HYPE that's what!
As I also said yesterday it seems the most common phrase being over a cell phone connection, still after 3 decades of cell use here in the country that invented the telephone is "you're breaking up."

On both the Android and iPhone side, innovation has slowed down. The new Note is a good phone but there is really nothing new about it. With one exception, the upcoming Samsung Fold will be pushing the envelope a bit. I have no problems with people complaining.....that's diversity of thought and we should be happy that right is protected. To be fair there are very positive threads in addition to the negative ones.

The constant negativity is annoying. But apple has been very boring lately.
Indeed, but let’s be honest, so has the rest of the phone market been boring (I mean even new design attempts like folding phones seem kind of lame other than the coolness of having a folding screen panel), and even computers have been kind of blah lately in the WOW factor department. There’s a reason people are keeping phones (android and apple) longer than ever, and that the custom PC market is booming right now (aging gaming consoles not withstanding).

As @spooky23 mentioned above, tech is getting pretty saturated. It’s hard to innovate when you have a device in your pocket that does everything but wash your dishes and wipe your butt...

We truly live in a privileged (at times even entitled) world. I remember a time when you had to wait five minutes to boot up a device that did basic word processing, and another 3 minutes for it to dial up to the internet and I’m not even that old.

To @roxysdad, some people complain because they are die hard fans and want something new and exciting and then are sad when there is nothing earth shattering. Then there are the rest who are largely trolling for the sake of argument.

I always say if you are so miserable with Apple (or another company) why do you keep complaining about it on a forum? Go find a “better” brand and be happy, life is too short to be unhappy, just saying. Healthy discussion is one thing, but trolling is a very rampant thing in these days.

I don’t understand the people who defend apple in saying “well what else do you expect them to do?!” Look around at the competition! There’s plenty left for Apple to do! They would just rather do it very slowly over time and charge us each year per upgrade instead of giving us one big update for once!

Now that 3D Touch is gone, this xs max is likely my last iPhone as that was truly the only real thing Apple had over the competition that I appreciate using. Now that Apple has cut that, there’s isn’t much keeping me here. Luckily I love my xs max and won’t be getting rid of it anytime soon

It would be great if these companies would just realize that if there isn't going to be so much innovation anymore that maybe they could just settle on making the devices more reliable. It's the same with most all consumer electronics, from cell phones, to cameras. Stop trying to be innovative with every release and just release something that works the way it is supposed to right out of the box. I am tired of being the quality control department that you don't want to pay for anymore. Make it work right, and make it work better than anything that came before it and I will gladly spend the money that it takes to own.

I should add this, I honestly wouldn’t mind Apple looking back at the basics of what a phone is, and re-innovate or redesign features that are kind of forgotten. Like call quality (more tonally accurate voice reception), or a slightly thicker design to give me a two or three day battery life like we used to have on flip phones.

For features I think we are spoiled, our phones truly do everything you could possibly need and more. They are after all just tools, nothing more. If they get the job done what’s to complain about? If you don’t like the styling then there are other designs out there, or buy a case that covers the parts you don’t like? It’s not the end of the world though. Nobody is saying you have to buy a $1,000 phone with a design you don’t like or lacks features you want.

1) You can't really expect to have a new phone design every year or 2 and expect massive changes?
Why not? Apple has done many times before.

The reason that Apple doesn't do it is probably because of costs. The ROI of having small changes over the same form factor (relatively) over multiple years should be much higher than having a new design every two years.

Cars don't even do this many changes and cars generally take 5-7 years to develop a new generation with a new design.
Not the same thing.

BTW, the car companies could do this, but it just wouldn't be economical due to the ROI statement mentioned above.

4) Reverse charging
Utterly pointless & inefficient. It's for those people who can't seem to charge their other devices but the phone. Fix: how about you charge your devices.
I kinda feel this way about it too, but let the user make the choice whether to use it or not.

only a small percentage of people will want that
I don't know about this one.

Everything else, I think you have a good point.

It would be so awesome to see Apple innovate around smaller size again.

Not saying a flip phone would have to be the form factor, but imagine what a SWEET flip phone with 3.5-4" screen(s) they could make if they tried!

Like a modern iOS powered Moto RAZR.

That is the sort of curveball of awesome innovation I'd love to see.
How many years can we really go with another rectangular metal slab of glass with "more cameras on the back"?

New and interesting ideas and form factors and use cases - Get ACTUALLY INNOVATIVE Apple!
C'mon! You started this train! Let's get going again!

I agree. I am not saying to just forget about features, I am saying lets not spend all our time and energy with them at the sake of producing phones which no longer do the essential functions the way they should. It should never be taken for granted that these are after all phones. The industry is sure capable of producing far more reliable call quality phones than it does, but apparently that's not where the money is. Instead, it seems to be more interested in producing flashy, pretty devices with LED (who really needs it) screens, atmos sound (I still laugh at the thought of this on a cell phone), and other things like these. These would all be fine if I didn't have to ask half the people I am trying to talk to to repeat what they just said to me either because the fidelity of the audio is so poor or because the antennas aren't good enough to hold the signal reliably.

I don’t understand why people, so outraged by the price and product itself, don’t just move on to a device they feel has superior design and value.

It’s. A. Phone. Dear. God.

I’ve said this before, but maybe it’s because I went from single to married with kids and a small business owner since I joined here in 2008, but it’s like the iPhone is the only thing some folks have to treasure in their lives - as if nothing else comes close in priority or precedence. It boggles my mind that there can be such outrage over a product launch.

I’m still enjoying my 7. May upgrade. Not sure. If I do I think I will really like using it. If I don’t I will eventually look at other offerings from companies less hyperbolic in their marketing efforts.

or

Everything now on demand without limitations because I deserve it. Right?

Mind blown.

Respectfully,

An aging LEGO maniac.

This has to be one of the most understated comments of the year for tech! LOL. I use my phone as a phone first and the rest for texting, music playback, and CarPlay, and the biggest gripe is still the simple act of taking business calls and having to make my boss to repeat themselves multiple times simply because the voice quality on phones are so crappy. But hey, my phone takes 4K videos and can put imaginary objects onto my kitchen table #facepalm...

lmao

So true..

Next year will we get "IMAX Liquid Retina with Dolby Atmos Sound from the HyperBead Texture Surface Glass"?

Apple...
Guys...
..It's an effin' smartphone, not a home theater install.
I can hear my old tv cussing under it’s breath in jealousy....

Precisely why I'd like a "new" smaller iOS powered phone option with some new innovation on form factor/size, etc.

I need to occasionally hail a ride, look something up, message, talk on the phone and snap some pics here and there.

I want the smallest, lightest, most convenient way to do that (why I have a discontinued SE)

Speaking of AR.
I've yet to find any reason whatsoever to care one iota about that.
I tried a "measuring App" or two and both were inaccurate garbage.

I used a 5c for years until I had no choice to but buy a new phone. I have literally tried almost a dozen in the past year, Apple, Samsung, Google and a couple of others. Know what? Essentially these days they all pretty much suck. The manufacturers are so caught up in building to the needs of 16 year olds whose entire life revolves around txting that they no longer feel the need to make the actual phone work better or even as good as they used to.
Best phones I ever had were the ones from Motorola and Blackberry years ago, before the iphone was invented. Those phones were reliable, sounded great, and kept the call first and foremost. Lots of people say if ur not happy with what you have, why not just get something else. Well you know what? There really is so little to choose from anymore. They honestly pretty much all suck as plain 'ol telephones.

I was surprised by the vitriol too. Part of it could be because the marketing is so over-the-top. It takes "courage" to remove a headphone jack. A phone is now "pro" and makes professional cameras obsolete, because it can do 4x zoom and has a "pro" font.
