Seems like the OP just wants to feel supported in their reason not to upgrade?

Some people want to be supported in their decision not to upgrade, some people want to be supported in their decision to upgrade.

But the only person who cares if you upgrade, or choose not to upgrade, your phone is you. Your money, your decision, and I presume the "you" is an adult.

(And Apple of course, but as they're the ones who get your money if you do upgrade, they are too biased for their opinion to count).

Because we want to? We tend to upgrade every 2 years, pass our phones down to the kids, and trade in the kids’ phones. Their 13s are really starting to show their age in the battery life. So if the prices are reasonable to us then we will likely upgrade. If the prices are not great or we really don’t like the phone for some reason we can stick it out another year but the 4 year old batteries will be a pain to baby along for another year. We live too far from an Apple Store to make battery replacement a real option.

Oh no my friend, we help people to make good choices! I can upgrade to the 17 Pro but there is no reason why I would… remember that an iPhone is a tool that helps you do things, what the 17 Pro will do better than the 14 Pro? AI? I don’t care about that, not even useful… action button? Not even useful, camera button? Not even useful… The battery life is correct and the screen too… The only bigger change is the camera !! Tho the problem it that it’s not even a revolution, we are staying with the same main cam so photos on x1 on the iPhone 14 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro will look almost the same…
How can you believe that what is a good choice for you is a good choice for everyone?
All of us can read the same articles and decide for ourselves.

You said the camera will not be a revolution. I’m not waiting for a revolution. I want an upgrade.
So the 17 Pro Max will be a good choice for me.

Those last two words are important.

if you don't really care about AI
Not saying I care for it, could have lived without, but I regularly use ChatGPT on my iPhone 11 Pro from 2019, works great tbh.
New iPhones do not offer anything substantially different from my current experience, as well as they are probably gonna be even more expensive. I probably just don't like iPhones anymore in their current state, there must be something truly phenomenal to make me upgrade like removable battery, better screen tech and not this OLED FRC cheapskate, as well as better camera - at least 1' sensor, and not Quad Bayer but regular Bayer array with real 48MP resolution with full Bayer RAW support.

iPhones and iOS specifically do not cater to my needs. I want to change system font, add my own icons for apps, force dirrent font in Safari for every website as I do on desktop Firefox, want to be able to disable post-processing in images camera takes for more natural photos, and iPhone seems to be like complete opposite of what I want and need. So why would I dump 1000+ $ for something that doesn't give me freedom I need? I am not saying I will go Android because it is very similar to iOS these days, I just won't be updating my phone. FaceTime works, 3rd party apps work? What else would one need?

MacBooks, iMacs and iPads look to me as much better hardware to invest money into. They work longer and offer lots of freedom in what I can do. Lol I can even install different browser with different engine on my MacBook! And on iOS if you don't update your browser engine, Javascript do not update too and it often breaks site functionality

Sure if you are on an old iPhone, upgrade can be cool BUT again unless you want a Pro, you should consider iPhone 16 Pro even if you don’t want a year old phone because it should be much better… The iPhone 17 only seams to import some pro things and have an A19 chip… Tho iPhone 16 Pro will be better like the cam !
If we compare 16 Pro and upcoming 17 Pro, older one will look pathetic when 17 Pro comes out.

Why? Because Apple is very smart at milking their customers.
Ever since iPhone 15 there were serious overheating issues with iPhones, and 16/Pro didn't solve those.

Rumors tell in 5 days we will see iPhone with vapor chamber. People who have issues with overheating will probably upgrade to 17/Pro.

Tho if I owned one of these phones that overheat that much, I would have been offended and just moved Android. I am sure a phone must work at comfortable temperature no matter what

It’s not your money though.
Then upgrade…

Yeah I use the ChatGPT app too, when I mean AI it’s about Apple intelligence.

It’s common sense… It’s like if you buy a new car just because it can go faster and has some other features… This when you just bought a very good car 2/3 years ago

Here again if you wanna upgrade you can, but now you know what I think about it.

Every fall without fail lol

Why are people going to upgrade to the iPhone 16?

Why are people going to upgrade to the iPhone 17?

Why are people going to upgrade to the iPhone 18?

Why are people going to upgrade to the iPhone 19?

Why are people going to upgrade to the iPhone 20?

lol actually the iPhone 16 pro was a correct upgrade, 18 pro will probably be but not sure for the 17 pro… Apple doesn’t seams very impressive in 2025…

The iPhone 17 looks like a pretty small upgrade to me, the iPhone air looks to me like a bad deal because of the camera and battery... So why the 17 ??? Many of us have the iPhone 14 Pro, if you don't really care about AI (and I don't understand why you would), then I don't feel it's worth to upgrade. There is no revolution here...
I have a personal 16 Pro and work phone is a 14PM carrying both which are way too heavy on my belt 5 days a week.

17 Air would be perfect to switch to on both personal and work.

I don't need ultra long battery life nor the fancy camera stuff.

I used to love the lighter weight plastic models of yesteryear.

what was good about the 16 pro? I saw zero reason to upgrade from a 15pro. there's really nothing my 15 pro can't do that that can. maybe if they hadn't botched the AI stuff so bad and made it exclusive to the 16 but...

You will lose a lot in the camera... I suggest you to try at the Apple Store... Honestly I don't think it will be a lot lighter...

Good advice but I avoid the Apple store during launch weekend - it's a hot mess...

But I will order the 17 Air and try it out for 14 days and see how it works with my setup.

My wife who uses the Pro / Pro Max camera features was the one who persuaded me to switch back since I never use the camera features, except for an occasional snapshot.

She said I never use any of the camera features and my photo skills are of a teenager so that's why.

So here are all the changes :

- Bigger 6.3 inch display (compared to 6.1)

- New A18 Pro chip

- The new camera control button

- 48mp ultra wide camera (Compared to 12)

- All new photographic styles

- Can shot at 4k 120ips (compared to 60)

- x5 optical zoom (compared to 3)

- 27 hours of battery life (compared to 23)

- Better ceramic shield

- Faster charge with magsafe... support of 25w chargers

- All new mic system (Pro level)

- Some other small changes

So on the 17 pro we are going to have a 200$ price increase and that's a problem... also since the battery is very good on the 16 pro now... a battery improvement on the 17 pro is not that useful... Features like 4k 120ips are cool since you can enjoy this on your tv... tho 8k is a lot heavier and you cannot enjoy unless you have an 8k tv...

I have a 14 pro and would like to trade in while the value on my phone is still good. Also my battery is starting to show its age. Also I'd like to move to usb-c since the vast majority of the things in my house use it. Also I'm curious about the improvements to siri. Also I think the rumored orange color might be the first non-black/silver/gray iPhone I buy.

the only thing in this list that sounds impressive to me is the x5 optical zoom...and that wasn't a 16pm feature, it was a 15pm feature, and it didn't get better at all with the 16.. it's supposed to be 8x with the 17

Love USB-C too - everything else at work and home are one type of plug.

I wish the new orange color would be available for the 17 Air - that would be my perfect match!

The largest number of iPhone users don’t have an iPhone 16. With over a billion iPhones out there, most likely don’t have a 15 or a 14 either. And then, when you take into account that half of the iPhone 17’s sold will be to folks that don’t even own an iPhone, that’s an enormously large number of folks that may like to have an iPhone 17.
