This thread is amusing. First the statement that a company with $200B+ in cash reserves 'needs' this iPhone to be a hit.
I agree with everything you said, but I think you are taking the term "need" in too literal a sense. Apple doesn't need anything in the sense that a wrong turn would bankrupt them. But they need to keep producing hits to keep growing and keep investors happy.

I have no idea how well the next phone will sell. I can say that, from an enthusaist perspective, I haven't quite heard as much backlash about what the next phone might be than now. That could mean nothing.

This thread is amusing. First the statement that a company with $200B+ in cash reserves 'needs' this iPhone to be a hit. Apple will be just fine OP. Know why? Because people in this forum, enthusiasts, make up a minute percentage of the billion iPhones sold to date.

I have hundreds, literally, of friends and acquaintances who use iPhones. You could walk up to most of them and ask how many GB of ram their phone has, or what resolution the screen is, and they'd tilt their head and stare like a confused puppy. They don't know nor do they care of the specs of their iPhone. It's an iPhone, it's what they know, so they buy it. They have no clue what's coming in Sept let alone about some 'super phone' come 2017.

These forums do not represent the norm. Far from it. Enthusiasts might hold off and wait based on rumors. Or they could get the new iPhone every year regardless like I do for no other reasons than because I want to and because I can.

But how long. Hooooow long can Apple survive off of that? Apple is not a company of needs, it's more so a company of... wants...

I mean you act like Apple hasn't had failures before. It can happen again.

Microsoft did this with the Xbox One S. "We're coming out with this device, but the real new Xbox is coming after that."

Well, then why come out with the product at all? Now that we KNOW about the iPhone 8, we're not going to buy this phone WE'RE GONNA WAIT.

If you look at the phone, it looks just like an iPhone 6s. And with what we've been hearing, it pretty much IS an iPhone 6sII.

It's literally the nothing new iPhone. They did this before with the infamous "iPad 3"

Because it'll be a newer, more powerful, more capable device I get to use for a year.

Same reason I upgrade every year.

But you didn't get the iPhone SE, did you. See, nobody will mention that.

They act like that phone doesn't exist. And those 5c's, what happened to those? Who knows.

And actually, if you think back to when Apple had that dilemma of releasing both the iPhone 5c AND the iPhone 5s at the same time? You witnessed what people did. They didn't buy both! They chose one!

And everybody left the 5c in the dust (even though it was a good phone)

You know what people will do. Most people will make up their minds at the keynote, "I'm waiting on the iPhone 8."

Yeah, I don't purchase the various attempts at entry-level helper phones. I get the marquis, fully-functional devices.

À la, iPhone 8!

The thing about iPhones always are that they have that must-buy new feature. (And exclusive! You know it's GOT to be exclusive!) Apple usually doesn't release the "marquis phone" without it. Where's the exclusivity here? I mean you could say Airpods are the new exclusive thing but, that's something I could consider contrived.

But with this, the iPhone 8 is what we all want. We don't want this upcoming phone, if every rumor turned out to be true: I'LL WAIT.

OP, you make it sound like Apple will be lucky to sell 23 phones this cycle
Every cycle people predict doom and gloom and every cycle Apple sells a crap load of phones
Will they sell a record number? Probably not, but they will still sell a crap load
Will they sell more next cycle? Probably, but truth is most people just aren't as passionate about it as folks on this forum
Given the over-under on 23 phones this cycle, I'll take the over

PS - I have a 6s and I will get the new phone
You asked in your title, "Why would anyone buy a iPhone 7 (aka 6SII) when we know about iPhone 8?"
Answer, "because I am on a plan that gets me the new phone every year"
Simple

I see what you're saying. Totally agree. The iPhone has been their bread and butter so tail spinning on that would definitely not be in their better interest.

No you are right. I over simplified the term need. They do ride the on the success of the iPhone and investors are certainly paying close attention to what they are bringing to the table. I think this release will be the most interesting yet. Will the lack of a redesign hurt sales? Will people hold off or move to a competitor? I'm quite eager to see.

The iPhone 7 is nothing like the SE. The SE was purposely down-graded phone at a lower price point. The 7 is the next flagship phone.

What do there SE or 5c have to do with anything? Those weren't intended to be upgrades. Even if it's incremental, this year's phone will be an upgrade over what's currently offered, so there will always be people willing to buy.

Let's remember a guy got fired because of a Maps app. Apple not being able to sell an iPhone? Everybody loves to see a train wreck.

And this whole Airpods thing could become a sensational trainwreck too. But we'll just have to wait and see. Apple's always been good about evading most of the muck and the meyer by playing it safe.

Not from what I'm seeing.... I mean look at the phone... It looks like an iPhone 6.

Not everyone comes to forums and reads the rumours. In fact most iPhone buyers won't even know about the rumoured massive upgrade next year. So they will buy based on the device that is released this year.

Well maybe because they have a iPhone 6 and never upgraded to the 6s.
All the more reason to wait.

iPhone 7 is a placeholder, nothing exciting other than to the worshippers of the brand. Apple has exerted their influence over and over, conditioning users to accept little in the way of improvements. A brilliant strategy on Apple's part, it's beginning to wear thin.

People are noticing and you're seeing the comments here on the forum. Apple’s Magic is fading...

Whatever drugs the people are on that have already decided that the 7 isn't a worthy upgrade before it has even been announced, they really need to step away and reassess their life.

Wait until it comes out and then decide what YOU want to do. There is no right answer on which phone to get and I am convinced that next year we will get just another iphone. the "anniversary phone" is nothing more than hopes and dreams.

We know there's going to be an iPhone 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, & 14 also. Though they may be called by different names.

No matter what you buy, until they stop making them, there will always be a new model released after you buy one.

People are deciding based on leaks. It's always possible that Apple shows us something unexpected. That hasn't happened for years. I mean we are seeing motherboard leaks and everything now. It's about making educated guesses.

I've said multiple times I'm not looking to upgrade but that is based on what I know. If Apple shows me something conpelling that I didn't know that's a different story. I honestly can't remember the last time a keynote showed us something we hadn't known for months beforehand and things are getting close.

You've already seen and used one? Now that sounds magical.

Every iPhone release always had something revolutionary. They don't ever really sell for gimmicks, I mean they do major revolutionary R&D really with every release

If they're removing the headphone jack they must have a pretty good reason

Well I would say that the 6 was hobleed since it had less ram, so for people who have a 6 like me, the seven is big upgrade .
